Banksy in San Francisco, by Hanging Around on Apr 24, 2010 23:16:32 GMT 1, he's on fire in San Fran! ALL OF WHICH IS UNPROMPTED BY ANYTHING OTHER THAN HIS FILM RELEASE. THIS SMACKS OF SO MUCH MARKETING PEGGY IS SWITCHED OFF BEYOND BELIEF. LONG GONE ARE THE DAYS OF TOPICAL, NON COMMERICIAL STREET ART WORK "WELCOME TO HELL" BANKSY HAS EATEN WARHOL, HIRST & SAATCHI, CHEWED THEM UP AND GIVEN YOU AN OVERHYPED FILM PUBLICISED WITH RENEGADE STREET ART, THAT LIKE SHEP FAIREY IS ABOUT AS DANGEROUS AS TERRY WOGAN. PAGGY DOESN'T MIND A JOKE, BUT THINKS SO MANY ARE MISSING THE PUNCH LINE HERE.
this is an excellent observation, especially from a dog
aside from the peace and love, the other stencils have been slightly edited ideas from the bristol show, or other bits from other stencils, so we're seeing nothing new here, which points to PR
i would much rather have seen the one original artwork than overkill just for the sake of it

did they hurt your feelings wilf? Do you know what Banksy's work originally represented?
Just a question, although I accept that anyone who gets on their high horse about this, is being a hypocrite as nearly everyone who follows his work, has a print on their wall or wants one.

Also, again, if it's him doing all of this in SF and elsewhere - he could just be signaling to all the talented graf writers out there to "own the night" right now....it could be terrific what we could see out in the streets in the coming weeks....

dont understand this, does owning limited edition artwork mean i have to like unnecessary promotion for everything banksy does? two totally different things in my mind

that sentiment is true regarding the film but its not about french fries really - its more relative to the art world in general. i think b'sky was just rescuing a situation and is now exploiting it - the idea rather than himself - i think the film is that-

you've bought into Banksy as a commodity, he's promoting that commodity, what can you do? I agree tho, I'm not particularly happy about it all.

He's not a football team wilfsboy...you don't have to defend him to death for everything he touches/does.
I fully understand he has a film out and there is promotional work to be done for it but this whistle stop tour across America to co-incide with screenings is so transparent. I wonder what is planned for the dvd release?? I see Avatar rebuilt the tree of souls in Hyde Park for their dvd release, that'll take some topping.
I hope these works attract new fans who delve further into his past....they might discover old gems like this back when he seemed so much rawer and exciting as an artist with his work seeming like it actually had something to say.

Banksy in San Francisco, by Hanging Around on Apr 25, 2010 0:01:16 GMT 1, mmmm i actually have no problem with the idea of banksy promoting himself as an artist, or the movie, or whatever, its the way its been done
in this instance, for the main part, its PR for PR's sake - what was the point in putting up recycled ideas? its already been said, its been done before

"A new quasi-verified mural attributed to the notoriously anonymous Banksy materialized above Amnesia Bar on Valencia Street some time Wednesday, according to art snoopers, enthusiasts and nearby shop owners."

Banksy in San Francisco, by boaty on Apr 25, 2010 0:57:03 GMT 1, There are alot of new fans and moviegoers who have never seen Banksy's work - the movie also doesn't show alot of what he has done - so it's great he's adding to their experience real time;
suggesting he not effectively re-use old work - is like telling a singer never to sing that wonderful, famous song again to a larger audience (the one that only a few of us heard)....good PR, I say.....

Banksy in San Francisco, by otomi on Apr 25, 2010 5:44:41 GMT 1, I'm happy Banksy did something in SF - 6 nice street pieces - not complaining at all. I will have a nice Sunday field trip and look at them. If it promotes his movie good for him. The movie is almost out of the theaters here and only a few people will be moved by the pieces to go see the movie. The screenings were sold out when it opened here long before he put those pieces up.

Banksy in San Francisco, by tobaum on Apr 25, 2010 7:31:08 GMT 1, I don't understand the critics about promoting the movie... None of the pieces are about the movie and the movie isn't mentionned... What's the difference before and after the movie? Nothing but he's currently there so he's doing some art on the walls around. IMO it's not promoting the movie, it's promoting art... and the movie do the same, promoting art.
