the big piece is by a local LA artist named Heidi Calvert, not Hussar. That piece always seems to evoke a response from anyone who sees it .

Mr Brainwash 'ICONS REMIX' Show - May 9th, by snausages on May 16, 2010 1:39:41 GMT 1, NO ONE STOLE THE SOUP CAN, EVERYONE HAS USED IT FROM SHEPARD FAIREY TO RAUSCHENBERG !! I think its the fact he copied the spray can and soup can fusion idea that rene had. Thats technicaly biting and is not really cricket.
Again. Where does biting end and appropriation begin? If you asked me this and most of Fairey's work is "biting," but everyone seems to give it a pass because Fairey is hype and the toy is cool. Why is this not biting and MBW is biting. Before you answer, consider what MBW might be doing on a conceptual level by regurgitating (mashing up) Rene, Banksy, Fairey. (Even if he doesn't realize it)
We think of ourselves as so much more advanced than decades past, but when I consider art from the past century to art now, the work was so much more cerebral decades ago. Back then appropriation was used to (possibly) create a beautiful image as well as evoke thought and get a reaction. Now it's used just as much to pump out a cool image and market a limited edition.
Pop will eat itself.

Lets see where MBW goes. For good or bad. He's got a big help up from banksy and Fairy fo his video footage. Lets see where it goes. But do we need the Jbay hype. I think not. People can see through it.

4. I think MBW is cack.
5. why do i like MBW? because he is a nice guy and it reminds me of going to see the film on the southbank...do you know where that is your northern chavster?
wheres the hype grandad.
by the way. if you want to make bucks, get MWB now. is that what you wanted to hear?
and you know why i am saying MBW is cack? its because i might as well pretend to join in with the stuck in the past idiots on this forum who pretend to hate stuff and then buy it and stick it in their dust free, soul less portfolios.
...and comments on here will sway no opinion to the fact that MBW is going to get even more popular and i hope he does, so it gets to you even more.

Mr Brainwash 'ICONS REMIX' Show - May 9th, by Simococo on May 16, 2010 5:43:17 GMT 1, I think its the fact he copied the spray can and soup can fusion idea that rene had. Thats technically biting and is not really cricket. Again. Where does biting end and appropriation begin? If you asked me this and most of Fairey's work is "biting," but everyone seems to give it a pass because Fairey is hype and the toy is cool. Why is this not biting and MBW is biting. Before you answer, consider what MBW might be doing on a conceptual level by regurgitating (mashing up) Rene, Banksy, Fairey. i think biting is considered biting when one graffiti or street artist takes another's idea from the street and then labels it their own. I don't recall Shep doing that but I may be wrong. Appropriating other imagery whether it be corporate logos or advertising and even artists work from a previous generation or genre (warhol) is not.

Oh right right, I forgot, the laws of the street.
But to your "from a previous generation" line, in fact Richard Prince "bit" photographers that were from his generation and contemporary to him. So is Prince a phony? Is he a "biter." Why did he do that? What was he thinking? Was it a ruse to market limited editions?
I also think you neglected to consider what MBW might be doing on a conceptual level. I could argue that (despite MBW's happy & dumb persona) he's the first artist of this entire genre to actually inject an intellectual concept into the idea of appropriation. You might say Banksy has, but that was more a homage to warhol, although Banksy has done some great stuff, he hasn't challenged appropriation on a conceptual level like Warhol or Prince did.
But whatever, it would seem by the arguments around here that all artists now have a free pass — unoriginal idea, blatant copy, "hey it's just appropriation man!" Unless of course they're living by the code of the "street" in which case they're "biters."
So maybe we should ask, should plagiarism, forgery, copied all be wiped from the dictionary? By your argument what would it take for Fairey to actually be guilt of copying? Only if he copies from another "street" artist? Is that it? Is that where the line is drawn? Or is there no more line at all?

Mr Brainwash 'ICONS REMIX' Show - May 9th, by snausages on May 16, 2010 18:06:09 GMT 1, Underneath all the supposed tomfoolery of MBW's work, there is something subversive going on You're right about that, and the contrast between the simple, visually pleasing, anti elitist art mixed with the subversive appropriation is what makes it interesting. The big question though, does MBW really grasp the subversive and intellectual undercurrent in his work? Ha, I doubt it.
