Mr Brainwash 'ICONS REMIX' Show - May 9th, by Happy Shopper on May 16, 2010 19:53:05 GMT 1, I think people seem to be missing a rather major point made in the Exit film. Street artists like Banksy and Shep developed over many years a style, technique and Reason for doing what they do. MBW just saw them work, realised he could copy the whole thing, and used the knowledge purely as a money making scheme! I like many of his images, find the MBW hype entertaining, but it's tricky to see him as a real artist.

Mr Brainwash 'ICONS REMIX' Show - May 9th, by taxidermot on May 16, 2010 20:24:23 GMT 1, simple, visually pleasing, anti-elitist art mixed with subversive appropriation...oh my days! he says subversively appropriating a simple, aurally pleasing, anti-elitist phrase..
i don't want to come across as someone who likes complex, visually challenging elitist art mixed with subversive originality but i probably am, so i struggle to understand the subversive and intellectual undercurrent of mbw's work..is it like how big businesses, like walmart or tesco, have built simple, visually pleasing, anti-elitist shops and subversively appropriate the brands/produce of smaller companies/producers to make vast profits? have i mixed mbw up with shep fairey?

Mr Brainwash 'ICONS REMIX' Show - May 9th, by snausages on May 16, 2010 22:18:26 GMT 1, Wow, ok I didn't want to drag this out any longer at all, but here you go.
A little awareness and you'll realize the vast majority of the "elitist" art establishment does not take MBW seriously. The people buying his work are not the snobby "elitist" collector. It appeals to the exact opposite type of person.
And Brainwash's subversive and conceptual element is that he's making a mockery of urban art, pop art, consumerismโhe's cannibalizing it and feeding it back to themโquestioning our materialism. And he's questioning not whether advertising should be considered art, (as was the case with Warhol and Prince) but whether even art should be considered art. What makes something popular, why do we like what we like? And in that he's ridiculing the pop culture flash mob lemming mentality that has made him.
Now look up Richard Pettibone โ MBW like Pettibone questions things such as originality and authenticity. But Pettibone takes it a little bit further by making miniaturized replicas of grandiose and famous iconic works by the old masters. MBW in contrast, humorously makes massive oversized scale works of art that draw directly from artists and methods that aren't time tested and cherished at all. Well, sometimes he may draw from bona fide art works, take his recreation of R Mutt's urinal. But he takes it to a ridiculous level and instead of trying to one up it, he dumbs it down to todays "common man" level of intellect by covering it in bathroom graffiti and scrawl - a stark contrast to the elitist over intellectualized gold plated urinal by Sherrie Levine for example, a work that the "elite art world" has accepted.
Now I understand what you're saying happyshopper, and to be honest I have a hard time taking MBW seriously myself. I also think it's hard for people here to like because it hits so close to home. He's mocking what many people here love and some people don't get the joke. But Don't think I'm a fan of his. I just find it a bit fascinating. Especially the irony that there really is a lot more to think about it in his work than is inferred in and of itself.
What does it all mean? I don't know. I'm not saying it's "good" I'd say some of it is downright aweful. But there is more here to think about conceptually than there is in most of the artists around here if you ask me. But honestly I am emotionally detached from the argument. It's just silly seeing people argue here when they don't even know why they're arguing about.

Mr Brainwash 'ICONS REMIX' Show - May 9th, by taxidermot on May 17, 2010 0:46:56 GMT 1, thanks for going to the trouble of writing the above snausages..just needed it spelt out..neat concept, but it just doesn't ring true as a pre-conceived concept..unless part of a banksy conspiracy, which has been ruled out, me thinks...and if appropriated as the concept, it still needs further clarifications....i'll give him a call in the morning.

respect to those in the last few posts who actually made this an interesting thread +1 to all of you
have to go along with the above comment, it's amazing what can be read into almost any body of work, but in mbw's case I think there's alot more luck, than judgement. But whether we like it or not, it is still art and if it's made us ponder just a little and widened some perspectives that can't be a bad thing.

Mr Brainwash 'ICONS REMIX' Show - May 9th, by A.R.T. on May 17, 2010 2:09:10 GMT 1, Again. Where does biting end and appropriation begin? If you asked me this and most of Fairey's work is "biting," but everyone seems to give it a pass because Fairey is hype and the toy is cool. Why is this not biting and MBW is biting. Before you answer, consider what MBW might be doing on a conceptual level by regurgitating (mashing up) Rene, Banksy, Fairey. (Even if he doesn't realize it) We think of ourselves as so much more advanced than decades past, but when I consider art from the past century to art now, the work was so much more cerebral decades ago. Back then appropriation was used to (possibly) create a beautiful image as well as evoke thought and get a reaction. Now it's used just as much to pump out a cool image and market a limited edition. Pop will eat itself i think biting is considered biting when one graffiti or street artist takes another's idea from the street and then labels it their own. I don't recall Shep doing that but I may be wrong. Appropriating other imagery whether it be corporate logos or advertising and even artists work from a previous generation or genre (warhol) is not.
Why are all the Gagnon fanboys not giving Banksy any grief for jacking Rene's "Forgive our Trespassing/Sins" image? All you MBW haters are hypocrites if you are not being upset that Banksy did the same thing MBW has done.

ahh my good friend I think you will find I addressed that point earlier in the year. Fanboy? I take it that you are a toy collector that has strayed over here from the kidrobot forum?
I don't remember ever posting that strongly if at all about the merits of Rene's work? I am merely having a little chat about the indecent act of biting.
Remember Dolk and Love Billy? no proabably not

Mr Brainwash 'ICONS REMIX' Show - May 9th, by Simococo on May 17, 2010 4:49:39 GMT 1, Oy vey... But no worries, no answer was really needed. More to get people to actually think. But that may be too much to ask.
you are debating the validity of biting as a concept and its impact on the wider art world
I wasnt. I was merley explaining to you what it is and why people tend to get the royal hump when someone does it to them.
the laws of the street........

Mr Brainwash 'ICONS REMIX' Show - May 9th, by snausages on May 17, 2010 14:17:15 GMT 1, Ha ha, I want to read the transcript from that call. Would be hilarious I'm sure.
No, I don't think it's a preconceived concept either, but it doesn't mean there's not anything going on in his work or that it doesn't raise very interesting questions. If it were a preconceived concept I think it would probably fail miserably, its genuine naivety is where it succeeds. But true, that is what makes it hard to take it too seriously. That and his poor rendering/photoshop skills.
So, this show is about icons. I see Bill Gates. I know a little bit about Bill Gates. I donโt know deeply about his story, if itโs true or not true, but only to think about it and see what I hear is good enough for me." Friggin hilarious right!?
I know, I read that article too, so funny, that's what makes him what he is. Could you imagine if he actually gave a reasoned articulate intelligent response to that question! It would be like the music stopped and you'd think what the hell's going on, that's not your schtick. It's all part of him being an "anti-elitist" likeable buffoon.

I am going out on a limb here and safely assume that I know considerably more than you
that's just a hunch though so I apologize if you are an esteemed writer from the Bronx
