King ROBBO π¬π§ Banksy v King Robbo β’ Street Art, by Guest on Dec 29, 2009 18:55:12 GMT 1, Here's what Revok had to say. His thoughts and feelings have been echoed throughout the entire community, and universally agree, it was not even remotely the right thing to do...
From: revok1.com/blog/2009/12/banksy-blunder/
BANKSY BLUNDER
Anybody who has ever done graffiti quickly learns to appreciate the value of a βLANDMARKβ -that is, the struggle to get your work to last anywhere in the street. Here in LA if you can get something to run for more than a month it is a achievement worthy of celebration. In London it is possibly more so since the buff is vigilant and very well-funded. One of the βGolden rulesβ in graffiti is to respect your elders; foremost by not going over themβ¦ Particularly in the extremely rare scenario where something has lasted nearly 3 decades(the graffiti equivalent to a UFO sighting) -I would assume Banksy would be aware of this rule, and respect it considering his roots lie in traditional graffitiβ¦ Apparently not.
I first came across this story via 12ozPROPHETS twitter, courtesy of MARE139βs blog on 12ozβ¦ It seems the story has been removed from thar site for some reason. Thats why i am posting it here.
Banksy here went over a βROBBOβ piece, Robbo was a pioneer of london graffiti in the mid-80βs and he painted this piece in the Regents canal in Camden in 1985. Somehow this piece had managed to stay up all of these last 25 yearsβ¦ That was until Banksy decided to go over it.
The original wall by Robbo painted in 1985β¦
Banksyβs major fumbleβ¦
Robbo takes back his spotβ¦

I'm just gona repost what I said in the regents canal thread because this is exactly the kind of s**t I'm talking about. I've nothing against Robbo taking his spot back in the slightest but I wish people wouldn't be so quick to jump on Banksy over this.
"Bugs me that none of them show any pictures of how wrecked robbos piece was anyway, quality journalism there.
All this about Banksy's lack of respect, Robbo slapped him which is fairly f**king disrespectful in itself but then to go yapping about it to all and sundry in a book? You'd swear Banksy's not allowed to have any pride! Someone going over your work or slapping you in the face and running their mouth... I know which I find more disrespectful."

King ROBBO π¬π§ Banksy v King Robbo β’ Street Art, by gozgoz on Dec 29, 2009 19:55:36 GMT 1, i dont understand this at all. sorry.
there are wars and famine happening out there and then somewhere out there, there are these grown men (i mean these dudes must be in their forties?) here getting severely upset about how something they have done 25 years ago, which let us not forget, has been tagged to hell, is being covered up by banksy.
This is really ridiculous. Im sorry. It really is.

Saying this was "not even remotely the right thing to do..." shows you don't know what you're talking about. And a small tiff in the world of graffiti doesn't deserve this much drama anyway.

Is that directed to me, or Revok? You realize that was a quote from HIS website, and not my words, right?
My point in posting that was specifically to bring another view; that it has (intentionally or not) caused alot of people to be pissed off at Banksy right now...
...People that are highly respected friends of his and have been instrumental to his success.
Believe me, nobody's crying. In fact, I'm laughing at YOU, and how seriously YOU seem to take this game. I could give a shit, personally.
If this is an act of solidarity by Banksy and Robbo, then that's great, but I'm not so sure that's the case.

King ROBBO π¬π§ Banksy v King Robbo β’ Street Art, by gozgoz on Dec 29, 2009 20:39:58 GMT 1, im sorry this is beyond me.
I dont quite know which is worst. Forty year old men getting their knickers in a twist because someone drew over their stuff. OR the friends of the forty year old men getting their knickers in a twist because someone drew over their friends stuff. Have you read some of the comments? Like "DEATH TO BANKSY THE C-NT" blah blah blah.
I mean I can just about let it rest if its 10foot or someone cos i seem to have a mental image 10foot is 10 years old or something but these are grown grown men!
This is really crazy. Im sorry. Im lost for words here. I think I might've slightly lost faith in humanity a bit. where's Bazz? I need a hug.
Like Mugatu said to Zoolander - "I feel Im taking crazy pills or something!"

King ROBBO π¬π§ Banksy v King Robbo β’ Street Art, by smallbylo on Dec 29, 2009 20:42:12 GMT 1, From a great blog from a great street artist as Gaia is... Here it is his opinion about Banksy vs Robbo ...
"It seems as though Banksy has truly done it again. When it seems like he has exhausted his long list of issues to take shots at, there is always one more trick up his wry sleeve. There is not a single member of the street art community that I can think of that has so brazenly challenged its aggressive and cantankerous older brother, graffiti. And for good reason, considering the retribution for going over any writer is not worth the effort or the pain.
Instead, artists who do not define themselves as writers, or frankly take on the kind of risk and responsibility of writers, are relegated to primarily street art or virgin spots. It seems that wheatpaste has only grazed (or maybe graced) a throwup or old school piece out of ignorance, not as a provocation; most notably Shepherd Fairey's encounter with Marty, and the whole DYM incident revolving around Jace and 11 spring (of course there are even some personal anecdotes that I won't go into.) In all of the countless cases in which street art has stepped on writers' toes, the transgressions have warranted outcries, apologies, and even formal letters of justification.
But here we have Street Art's most celebrated figure actually instrumentalizing an old school piece and incorporating it into the work UNapologetically. This is not a situation of callous poster application and graff forum howling, which is undoubtedly followed by a lauded takeback. Instead, Banksy scoped the spot, made the effort to cross the canal, and then turned a 24 year old piece into wallpaper, which despite being the ultimate offense, poses some interesting considerations. Firstly, instead of succumbing to graffiti's belligerence, Banksy confronted and subverted its methods. In a satirical statement, we see the old school converted into figurative wall paper (while of course it is still paint). Robbo actually becomes controversial wheatpaste, the very medium that is so loathsome to aerosol, and in doing so essentially the piece is reinvigorated back into the spotlight of attention.
And this is precisely the most fascinating point, this revisiting of a piece that stood in a position of relative inertia (disregarding the countless tags that tarnished its former glory). This is the conflict of the contemporaneity of street art and the rigidity of graffiti. Banksy, by daring to perpetrate the ultimate taboo, basically capping a piece of history, has problematized the structure of how work on the street functions. He has epitomized this dichotomy between of the amorphous, forgiving nature of Street Art, and the unbending, intensely hierarchical and historically obsessed operations of graffiti. He has taken the prohibited, under the looming risk of serious punishment, and made it his own. Ultimately, Banksy has disputed the static hierarchy of graffiti that is founded upon an insecurity of the ephemeral with a brave, new gesture that is unafraid of ramification or change. While I am saddened by the loss of such a remarkably old artifact, I am simultaneously encouraged by the confrontation that has awoken this sleeping relic from its slumber.
But then again, I am a street artist, so what is my opinion really worth. "

Yeah, I saw that photo.
That logic is retarded. So, since some other writers tagged over it through a 25 year period, that makes it right for Banksy to do so?
So, that's an interesting justification. All of you would be furious if anyone went over Banksy, wouldn't you?
Perhaps a bit of a double standard here? Hmmmm?
Carry on...

King ROBBO π¬π§ Banksy v King Robbo β’ Street Art, by junta on Dec 29, 2009 21:05:40 GMT 1, Jetset people go over banksy every day and there's no calls for heads to roll, in fact you'll see nothing but laughs for the way robbos come back here. No double standards there. And yes, it was already fucked therefore it was ok to go over it. It's like buying a battered old ford escort just so you can drive the shit out of it in a field, not something you'd do with a new car. My logic, retarded or not.

King ROBBO π¬π§ Banksy v King Robbo β’ Street Art, by snausages on Dec 29, 2009 21:23:35 GMT 1, As I said the other day, other people don't need to twist your words around, they're pretty bad straight from your mouth.
Is that directed to me, or Revok? You realize that was a quote from HIS website, and not my words, right? Oy vey, if you reexamine your post, the very first sentence. Which is the sentence pointed out and brought into question, does very much appear to be your words. The stuff under the link is obviously pulled from somewhere else. Your opinion that appeared before it is what was questioned.
Another great comment by Jet Set. Can't wait to do business with you.
And has anyone even considered the idea that beyond a little spat between bobbo and banksy is the conceptual idea here? Like Duchamp doodling over an image of the Mona Lisa, or the Chapman brothers drawing over top of a set of Goya's etchings. Or Banksy's crude oils even.
Here Banksy is turning graffiti on its head. Poking fun at making a mockery of what it's become by comparing it to commercial wallpaper. And it shows how uptight the graffiti community has become to react so negative to it. It's quite good, regardless of the so called street ethics.

[glow=red,2,300]Here Banksy is turning graffiti on its head. Poking fun at making a mockery of what it's become by comparing it to commercial wallpaper. And it shows how uptight the graffiti community has become to react so negative to it. It's quite good, regardless of the so called street ethics.[/glow]
+1 Bruised egos aside there's not very much talk of the actual point of the piece.

In this context, we're talking about the graffiti community that is represented by writers. I think it's fine to bring up the contentious viewpoint that Banksy is wrong for doing what he did.
Is that an antiquated viewpoint? That's for everyone to decide on their own. I decided a long time ago that I like Banksy; specifically because he knows how to push buttons...
By the way; I've never asked for your business OR your opinion. It's not about the money; it's about the art. I'm not going to feel bad at all if you don't buy anything from me, just like I don't feel bad when you try to discredit me personally, OK?

King ROBBO π¬π§ Banksy v King Robbo β’ Street Art, by bert on Dec 29, 2009 22:13:24 GMT 1, Is that directed to me, or Revok?
I'll give you a clue, it was directed at whoever wrote the bit I quoted. That's why I quoted it. Need me to draw a picture so you can understand?
Believe me, nobody's crying. In fact, I'm laughing at YOU, and how seriously YOU seem to take this game. I could give a s**t, personally.
Me take this 'game' seriously? LOL, dream on! I've bought a couple of Banksy prints and like looking at a few of the pretty pictures on this website. I haven't tried to create a 'career' by creating some tin pot internet gallery! But good luck to you continuing to leech off others to earn a crust, judging by your reputation on here and the Obey forums, you're doing a fine job.

King ROBBO π¬π§ Banksy v King Robbo β’ Street Art, by curiousgeorge on Dec 29, 2009 22:22:30 GMT 1, His thoughts and feelings have been echoed throughout the entire community, and universally agree, it was not even remotely the right thing to do... Did you even see the photo posted of the work tagged so badly it was completely ruined. PMSL Yeah, I saw that photo. That logic is retarded. So, since some other writers tagged over it through a 25 year period, that makes it right for Banksy to do so? So, that's an interesting justification. All of you would be furious if anyone went over Banksy, wouldn't you? Perhaps a bit of a double standard here? Hmmmm? Carry on...
Is it not a bit strange having you comment on this subject??
Anyway I'm off to buy a book....

I think you'll find the way you carrying on is retarded to your business then.
Making all the enemy you seem to be doing on here and other forums can only retard the growth of your business. You seem to be alienating some of your target customers.
That is retarded

King ROBBO π¬π§ Banksy v King Robbo β’ Street Art, by bert on Dec 29, 2009 23:23:14 GMT 1, Jetset - not sure where your post went, but I had time to give it a quick read. Thanks for the mature reply and your invitation, I appreciate it.
My distrust of galleries is the same as my distrust of anyone that manages/handles creative talent and makes money off the back of it...I find that when there so many chancers out there then I am naturally dubious until a gallery shows its worth/integrity. If I offended you in my post, then I apologise, it isn't personal as I've never met ya.

That's a great post, and admittedly, some much needed perspective for everyone here, including myself.
I'll tell you why I chimed in; because in the past 10 years, I've seen a genre of art (street art) develop that takes and takes and takes from it's parent (Graffiti) while often not acknowledging the work that the writers put in without any attention for all those years. All art is up to interpretation, so I do feel it's valid to include the graffiti writers in on this conversation. They are upset.
Maybe that's what Banksy is trying to do here? Bridge the gap, bring to light the accomplishments of his graffiti writing brothers from 25 years ago. Regardless of the intention, lots of people got upset by it. With time, perhaps they will understand the intentions more clearly, but maybe the delivery is a bit too "up for interpretation." and it just ends up creating animosity, and hate.
As for myself, I believe that with time people will understand my intentions are good, although perhaps the delivery is a bit too ham-fisted. I'll try and be more mindful of pushing people's buttons more gently, but this world would be boring if it weren't for people challenging ideas and sharing their perspective.
I have an opinion; it's most often designed to challenge the status quo, as is obvious in this thread. I am a product of the culture of resistance in which I was raised... My ideas may not be well understood, but they are valid, and well-informed, even if it doesn't always seem that way at first.
In this thread, I just wanted people to feel the other perspective; that's why I re-posted Revok's blog about this in the first place; to stir things up and make sure both perspectives are known.
