What Music are you listening to at the moment ?, by Coach on Mar 9, 2015 11:22:40 GMT 1, "Nothing Compares to You" written by Prince in 1985 and made famous by Sinead five years later. You win, @fifthspray. I was expecting that competition to go on for a couple of hours. Here's another one, which may require the use of your mind reading skills: Although I haven't seen this confirmed anywhere, I believe the Sinéad O'Connor video for Nothing Compares 2 U was an influence, inspiration or creative starting point for another (in my view, simple yet striking and remarkable) video released two years ago by a different solo singer. Name the singer and song title. [Don't say Miley Cyrus / Wrecking Ball.]
I have always found the Sinead O'Conner video for Nothing Compares to You very moving. The tear particularly so. Showed it to my boys not so long ago.

What Music are you listening to at the moment ?, by Deleted on Mar 9, 2015 14:52:25 GMT 1, Another competition: 20 points goes to the first person who picks up the music at 1:48 - 1:49, to which the man in the suit and bow tie is dancing at Los Angeles Union Station. Your answer can be either (a) the probable direct song reference or (b) the original song sampled in the probable direct song reference. Clue: "I haven't killed anybody ... since 1984." "Weapon of Choice" by Fatboy Slim?

That is the song the one-second clip sounds like, at least to my ears.
And here's the original song from which the relevant sample was taken:

Never mind. Could have done with those points though! Fun game. I'll name that tune in 1.

Its reminded me that everyone should do something like that at least once a day just to check that your still alive and have not been consumed completely by the rat race that we live in.

I was lucky enough to see her play Bristol with only the Brodsky Quartet to back her. It was one of only two gigs she played like that. The other was at the Union Chapel in London. I have a bootleg of that gig and today I am going to listen to that. Best gig ever (Bristol)

What Music are you listening to at the moment ?, by met on Mar 14, 2015 15:41:58 GMT 1, I have always found the Sinead O'Conner video for Nothing Compares to You very moving. The tear particularly so. Showed it to my boys not so long ago. Indeed, a moving video. My introduction to it was while staying in a youth hostel in West Berlin around March or April 1990. They had a television set in the communal area that was always switched to MTV.
I had travelled to Berlin shortly after the Wall came down. At the time, you still needed a 24-hour pass to visit East Berlin, going through Checkpoint Charlie. Once on the other side, you'd swap West German marks for East German marks with black market currency traders (who offered much better exchange rates than the official bureaux de change). For a few hours you could then experience relative wealth in a surreal and alien land.
That whole three-year period from 1989 to 1992 was incredible, unbelievable — and I weigh my words carefully there.
Remember names like Honecker, Jaruzelski and Ceausescu? Remember Vaclav Havel becoming president of Czechoslovakia, and Lech Walesa becoming president of Poland? Not only the Eastern Bloc but the Soviet Union itself collapsing, and countries like the Baltic states finally achieving independence again? Tiananmen Square, Mandela released from prison, the subsequent end of apartheid in South Africa, Pinochet stepping down as president-dictator, the break-up of Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia?
Simply an extraordinary time to be alive.

Simply an extraordinary time to be alive. Yes, I am old enough to remember all of that as an adult. As you say, incredible times. I also remember some of the horrors of that time - in particular, the awful events at Tiananmen Square. The distress of watching those events unfold has never left me. The fall of the Wall and apartheid were very special moments in history to watch and feel. Another, related, highlight for me was Mandela's visit to Brixton in '96. The atmosphere for that visit was unadulterated joy! Met, on an entirely seperate note, you may recall there was a discussion recently about the Sleaford Mods, and I suggested that you might like to watch out for a rerelease of the book "Grammer Wanker", a book of their lyrics - which can be read as modern poetry. Well, it's happened, the book has been rereleased, though out of stock until 23rd March. Worth checking out. bracketpress.co.uk/

What are the odds... I'm in Vegas and Cliff is staying a few rooms down frome me. Thr entire floor has a 24hr saturated smell of weed. When the cleaning crew does his room they wear face masks to keep from getting a contact high. They all get randomly drug tested. Classic!
