Where to buy Takashi Murakami Prints?, by barryh on Mar 26, 2012 17:59:40 GMT 1, How come they are so cheap? Do they come with COA?
Check ebay past auctions to see what they sell for. I agree though, they are very cheap compared to most of the dross that passes through forums

Where to buy Takashi Murakami Prints?, by mmmike on Mar 26, 2012 19:07:28 GMT 1, Ok just my opinion but of the Murakami prints I have seen in person I have been totally underwhelmed.
I don't think they are under priced. He produces so many and the prints look like signed posters.
I saw a few prints that I was considering buying a couple years ago but after seeing them in person I thought they were not worth buying.
i would love it if they were hand printed or something but quality wise they are not the type of thing I would want to hang.
I'm sure others will disagree. Maybe it is just a difference in taste when it comes to printing style.
I do find if you look around you can get his stuff from $750 to $1000 for a lot of his prints.

Where to buy Takashi Murakami Prints?, by oddkabob on Mar 26, 2012 20:39:13 GMT 1, Definitely on the other side of mmmike's opinion as I love Murakami's prints. I've always felt the way they are printed is quite unlike most other prints out there which I like. Colors are really vivid, many have a hint of metallic ink in them or are very saturated, some prints incorporate metallic foils, cold stamping, gloss varnishes etc. ---just a different animal from screen prints such as Banksy or fairey. I don't think you need to take one or the other as they each achieve different effects and looks specific for each artist. Murakami's art feels very 21st century, technology and anime influences all mixed in so the technique seems very appropriate to his work. The more I see the more I appreciate them and you definitely need to see them in person to get the full effect.

Nice to hear the other side of things. I'm sure I am in the minority because his prints are quite popular.
To me there is something nice about a raw looking hand pulled screen print.
Murakami prints are very slick and shiny I guess neither better or worse just comes down to opinion and personal taste.

Indeed, Urban art and proper contemporary art are always going to have different aesthetics. Work by people such as Hirst and Murakami would not look right imo knocked up as screenprints.

Where to buy Takashi Murakami Prints?, by Dice on Mar 26, 2012 22:45:55 GMT 1, I have one of the skull prints and I love the way it's made, really shiny with ultra vibrant colours...the paper has a heavy duty photographic type feel to it, nothing like a poster.
I think the various skull prints ESP the recent yves Klein colour versions are fantastic pieces of art

Where to buy Takashi Murakami Prints?, by Deleted on Mar 27, 2012 7:43:52 GMT 1, No COA and yes if you get them from source (Baltic, Perrotin, etc.), they are priced between 500 and 600 euros/pounds... And if you get them in Japan, they are slightly cheaper than that... So price may be correct.
Regarding print quality, it's true it may look like a poster (especially with the Kaikai Kiki text at the bottom of print) but as said above paper is very thick, more like heavy duty photographic paper... Color are vibrant and intense... and some have shiny metallic foils...
Last but not least, Murakami hasn't done much prints in the last two years, a few in Japan...
Very happy with my double DOB from Perrotin - www.peperuka.com/2011/03/03/takashi-murakami-me-double-dob/

Where to buy Takashi Murakami Prints?, by sal on Mar 27, 2012 14:07:21 GMT 1, here are my 2 pieces of Murakami beautifulness:
I bought these in Japan, so they came with Kaikiki invoice, which in my book works as a COA...
the only reason why these 2 are not framed and hanging is cause Im hoping I could get my hands on a nice 727 print instead, but if that doesn't happen in next month or two, these 2 are going up on the wall...

I believe it is one of his most iconic works, and probably his first piece that brought him world recognition (might be wrong).. also, it is combination of classic Japanese art (The Great Wave of Kanagawa), and modern, so there is a big thing too..
personally, I just like the image, cause it has the handmade feel, but also, Murakami's signature manga/comic style.. also, the colors are quite beautiful (especially in original version), and again, it just have that Japanese feeling to it that I like a lot about it..

Where to buy Takashi Murakami Prints?, by pezlow on Mar 28, 2012 6:43:20 GMT 1, Ok just my opinion but of the Murakami prints I have seen in person I have been totally underwhelmed.
The whole point about murakami and one of the reasons that he produces prints in the way that he does is about mass production. The copyright mark printed on the bottom of the prints is quite deliberately there so the viewer can make his own mind up about the mass production and mass ownership of art. It is both a homage to Warhol but also taking Warhol to the next level. I'm sure if you have a look round online for interviews with murakami you will find him saying this a lot more eloquently than I just have.

Nice point about the copyright mark at the bottom of the prints. The meaning is a subtlety that sometimes gets lost. His major travelling retrospective was titled "© Murakami", it's definitely a major theme in his art (and prints).

I said the same about Banksy's 4 years ago, and I was mocked and laughed at, be careful, and make sure it comes in the original shipping box.

Where to buy Takashi Murakami Prints?, by Rsyok on Mar 28, 2012 12:02:04 GMT 1, With Howies some of the finishes on a Murakami print (pearlescant sheen on early prints, foil/gold mirror finishes, spot varnish, the dark rainbow paper) would take a lot of resource to copy without the payback of signed Banksy prints. Also Murakami doesnt print copyright for nothing 'they' are very active legally.
(not saying it couldnt happen)

In terms of the high gloss effect and the copyright, does he go for the same effect on his original canvas pieces? I've never seen one in person.

Some cracking pieces on here- sal's and johnny's in particular.
I love the flowers; they always raise a smile. Therefore, I thought it would be the perfect image for my daughter's nursery when she was born a few years ago. Not having the cash at the time I decided to knock up my own repro with slightly softer colours. It's hand painted with acrylics on canvas. Took a while, but she loves it, so it was worth it.
Hopefully one day I can get her a proper one!

Where to buy Takashi Murakami Prints?, by mmmike on Mar 30, 2012 2:35:16 GMT 1, Great thread.
I'd say don't bother getting a "proper one". Yours looks great!
