Dran โข Learning To Fly, by gibbin82 on Dec 19, 2010 22:38:41 GMT 1, The one colour "Learning to fly" was unsigned but was both stamped and numbered, the small run of 100 Black and white and 50 colour was I suppose a reasonable amount considering the Banksy "Choose your weapon" was only a 450 run when Dran is a virtual unknown outside of the street art circle, where Banksy is arguably the most well know living artist in the world. Without wanting to sound in anyway selfish as I managed to get one (it took a hell of an amount of effort and expense though), I think the edition of 100 b&w and 50 colour was about right, anymore and there would had been more than the amount of people who actually made the effort to turn up early enough at Marks and Stencils to get the print. I dont think anybody who turned up shortly before the opening time of 11am failed to get a colour version and there was enough black and white to satisfy anyone else who turned up a bit later but early enough to join the queue. I empathise with anyone to far away to get to M&S as I was close to getting but them missing out on the online Exhibit print three times, before I travelled down to London and then back again on the Saturday to get a Learning to fly having to drive back in some of the worst weather conditions the country has had for years (avoiding anll the motorways and major roads as they were blocked solid with snow and abandoned vehicles). With the online copies there is never going to be enough, but in time I am sure those who missed out this time will with a bit of patience eventually get lucky with a future release which I probally will not get. If POW make too many prints available it then reduces the value of the work and the artist, although the methods of selling may be called 'hype' this is what it is all about in promoting an artist, but when it comes down to it if people don't like the actual work they just are not going to buy it no matter how much promotion (or hype) it gets. Regarding the numbers sold judging by what I see on eBay there may have actually been a small number to many, or going to the wrong people.

It was a bit strange as after buying a book and print, I asked about the signing and was told to come back a little later as it was a two in two out policy. I did have a wander and came back but had to wait in line again to get the book signed. Bit strange but well worth the effort. Did not see or hear about the bookmarks until reading on this forum. i got there at 11.10, i wanted the B&W print as ยฃ200 was a bit to much ยฃยฃยฃ, good job really as the guy 2 places in front of me got the last one at around 12.05. i cued for about an hour in the snow. got worse after this
we all started to look like human snowman. when i got in i grab the print and a book, and asked to wait in side for him to sign it, i also asked if he could sign the print but they said no, oh well, really pleased with it and can`t wait to frame it.
well here is my book

but i had to get a roll of black sacks to protect it on the way back, hope every one i gave the spare ones to saved there tubes and bags from getting wet.

I'm no expert but it looks like bog-standard, recycled card to me.
Can't see that it'll make much difference. The newspaper the bird and girl are printed on is vintage stuff, hand picked by Dran. My one dates from 1966, think the one on the wall at M&S goes back to 1932. It's old, frayed, and discoloured. Glueing it to cardboard isn't going to make age any worse.

I was in there today collecting a print and there were a couple of framed pieces unsold and more unframed yet to find a home...
While I was there, a woman buying lots of Xmas gift prints blindly grabbing Invader, sickboy, BAST's etc without a clue just saying oneof these, one of this etc and then she asked about the 'childs drawings... are they for sale???'
She didn't have a clue who or what she was buying but she was buying BIG!!

I was under the impression that there are a number of framed and unframed left at POW which look much better value (imo).
Saw someone walking past Liverpool St today with one, looked good but I can't understand the 'hysteria' here. What's that song from Chuck D and Flava Flav again??

Quite hilarious. Before M&S pretty much no one knew who Dran was!! Yet another bit of PoW hype for the sheeple. You have to take your hat off to them.
