Mantis Print ๐ฌ๐ง Street Art โข Art For Sale, by mammal2 on Aug 2, 2007 11:25:32 GMT 1, I have to agree with most of the comments made by Nu. I'm not trying to criticise TLSG or CB for the prices they charged - after all they are a business and there to make money. But the prices were extremely high. 5 grand plus VAT for original beejoir , ยฃ450 plus VAT for a small chris stain original that chris charges half that price for. ยฃ750 for the AMP Kwan canvases. This urban art phenomena is getting rapidly out of control. Do you spend 5 grand for a beejoir original or the same amount on a print by say Francis Bacon?? No disrespect to Beejoir (who after all doesn't have full control over prices) but I know what I would rather do. People need to stop, sit back and think about things a bit otherwise this really is going to end in tears.
respect!

but I'd have to say presently with the current insanity of Ebay prices for Beejoir's works, 5k for an original really isn't out of line..
(also haven't gallery's always charged the absolute top whack for pieces?...)

Mantis Print ๐ฌ๐ง Street Art โข Art For Sale, by numusic on Aug 2, 2007 11:26:20 GMT 1, Respect Nu, I agree with a lot of the sentiment there. I found it highly priced for artists I hadn't even heard of the week before. Also Leonard Street have had ยฃ370 of mine (For a Kennards 'Haywain') for 6 weeks now and I have still to receive the print! Don't answer emails and are not acting proffesionally at all.
Cheers, have you tried Mike and Nick at BRP, I'm sure they could give them a gentle nudge.

Its crazy only for the people who are willing to pay these prices, because if the market does crash or an artist fails to keep up the good work or just falls out of favour, these people could be left holding great big turkeys.

Mantis Print ๐ฌ๐ง Street Art โข Art For Sale, by numusic on Aug 2, 2007 11:50:17 GMT 1, People want to buy the art though, don't they nu? it's all very well enjoying it in the street but art has always been sold and always will, if it weren't for dealers selling it it would be pulled off the street (which we're all against). Sure the gallery and CB make money from it, it is business as you say, if anyone is able to deal with an artist direct there will usually be savings to make but that's not always possible. Also CB has done a lot for the like's of Cyclops, who really wasn't getting anywhere selling his own stuff, along comes CB with the promotion and therefore the sales, people don't buy what they don't want, but sometimes people are unaware what they do want because they didn't know it existed. All the prints sold for ยฃ125 which although not very cheap, are no where near expensive either, even POW regularly charge over ยฃ200 now, and bearing in mind the ยฃ400 - ยฃ700 prices some of these CB prints are reaching on ebay, exploitation could have been much worse.
I don't disagree with anything you've said. Buy anyone not aware of Cyclops after the hits he's been making the last few months is obviously not that interested in urban art. As for not selling much before the show, like you say, that's down to their ability to hype and their knowledge of how to sell. My post wasn't set up to have a dig, simply to highlight a few facts and to avoid newer members on these boards thinking that CB and TLSG were central to the development of this scene.
This scene is best represented by those that create the work and use the medium of street art to drive social change, resist corporate domination of culture, politics and education, and attempt to engage the man on the street with an alternative to Mcadvertising whilst giving them a pause to reflect on their day to day lives.
Now to gloryfie business and commercial galleries who have attached themselves to this scene (very late in the day) like limpits, is just plain wrong. The values contained within this work that go towards creating a dynamic substrata of public art seem to be sadly lacking in much of the recent "grandstanding" coming out of the UK commercial gallery sector, who's values are more in-line with the "system" that this type of work sets out to challenge and resist. It's great that artists use it to make a living, it's par for the course and probably a good way for an artist to susidise his or her living. But it's by no means the only way. The important part of this equation is the art and the artists, the values the work contains and promotes and our contribution to it with these boards and our wallets.
CB and TLSG are just shops and those within them, just salesmen. No more, no less. So let's hear more about the art and the artists, rather than those that sell it hey.
A few good alternatives worth supporting and representative of this scene outside of London. Feel free to add more.

I agree with alot of what your saying NU but what about those who don't live in areas with lots of unrban art.
I live in York and hardly see any decent graff around, and sometimes its only through galleries and boards like this that you find out about new people?
Just commenting! Oh and if anyone wants to come and hit York, then you are more than welcome!

errrm, I live in a city with a popultaion of 120 000 in Norway. There's no excuse. These boards are excellent sources of information and pretty much all street art is available to see online. And again, I'm not having a dig a commercial galleries and their shows. Frankie knows that, I genuinely believe that they play a valid role in this and I'm sure that i'd have had a great night down at Found. I'm just trying to put things into perspective a little.

If you want value get an original CopyRight for around ยฃ100 copyright.myshopify.com/ Or get a Vinyl Killer piece for about ยฃ20 www.dieselfuelprints.com/store/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=14_30_322

Mantis Print ๐ฌ๐ง Street Art โข Art For Sale, by snakes on Aug 2, 2007 17:53:25 GMT 1, The majority (minus ones for friends of artist, over seas etc) have not been released by LSG due to the amount of SBFO that hit ebay as soon as they got home. They have taken a list of potential buyers / interested persons that i believe they will be vetting at some point in the not too distant future (as they are currently no doubt very busy) to ensure that they go to good loving homes instead of being sold into ebay!
