But its hard to make sure that only real fans get the work.

Die hard fans who get hold of sought after prints could either be tempted by making some money to finance another print, or even not feel comfortable having something on their walls that's shooting up in value. I would think, and it's only a guess, that a few of these will be sent out to various galleries. I'm sure that's how Frankie worked when he was buying/selling and had a good relationship with the galleries and now it's payback time.

that way, if you don't get what you want it's still bad luck, but at least you haven't wasted tons of time as an F5 zombie with no life.
also, every release should include a bold-print notice right on the page that states that, historically, you're better off investing in index funds than art. that might give some of those people who can't seem to think of prints as anything but an investment a second thought.
