Banksy Street Art in Los Angeles, by RPM on Feb 25, 2011 21:03:37 GMT 1, Re: possible piece in San Diego - the tail and the rat's fur look odd to me. Hard to tell from the picture though ...
Re: perspex on building in L.A. - of course the owner of the building is entitled to do anything he/she wants. But the only reason for the perspex is because of the perceived value of the piece. However, let's not kid ourselves, it has nothing to do with the artistic value of the piece - it's the monetary value that is being protected.
I worry about a world that determines certain street art should be protected while other street art is not. It seems like people believe that Banksy and his work is somehow deserving of protection while other street art is not. Who gets to make that decision? What qualifications does one earn before they can make such a decision?
In my view, street art should live and die by the elements, whether human and/or natural. Do I personally like seeing Banksy's on the street - of course. Am I disappointed when a Banksy is buffed, stolen or defaced - yes. But I'm also disappointed that I no longer get to see certain pieces by Faile, Barry McGee, Choe, Saber, etc. out on the streets so it goes beyond just what Banksy has done. However, in the end I'd rather it be gone and live with the memory or pictures then have it put behind perspex. To me it's kinda like caging a wild animal. Plus, if you want your art to last forever, don't put it out on the street, pure and simple.

Banksy Street Art in Los Angeles, by Ågent ßacardi on Feb 26, 2011 3:10:37 GMT 1, BANKSY'S CAUTION WAS TAGGED AND REMOVED!!!! #@$@%^%$*$$^%*(*@@!!!!!!!!!!
Its location was a mystery until early this morning, and even before the sun has set, it's been totally ruined.
According to Melrose + Fairfax, some one pulled up in a car, tagged it, hopped back in his car, and drove away. A while later, some workmen showed up with saws, and cut it out, presumably to be put for sale.
I understand the part about opportunistic greed, but WHY would people tag over it!??!? (No, it's not a rhetorical lament, I REALLY want to know!!!!)
I'm glad I went there first thing in the morning to take my pictures instead of waiting till I got off work... but now I'm just plain disgusted. Sigh.

Banksy Street Art in Los Angeles, by sal on Feb 26, 2011 16:14:52 GMT 1, WHY would people tag over it!??! ? (No, it's not a rhetorical lament, I REALLY want to know!!!!)
people write tags to leave their mark, get noticed and recognized.. and knowing how much coverage Banksy pieces are getting, it's obvious target for it.. no other tag will be seen by as many people as the one over that sign... Im just surprised companies are not using his works that are still out there in the street, for advertising purpose (or are they?!)...

People also tag over other people's works as a sign of disrespect. It happens to everyone, just par for the course. Not everyone is a huge fan of Banksy ...

I guess I can understand that. Eventually, every piece of street art ends up being tagged over... and that's just the nature of the beast. But still, seeing it gone so soon just feels very sad!

Banksy Street Art in Los Angeles, by Ågent ßacardi on Feb 26, 2011 23:30:06 GMT 1, Watching them cut Charlie Brown Arsonist out makes me sick.
I can only assume that pieces get cut out for sale. Ironic how many of Banksy's pieces are about the exploiting nature of a consumerist culture (and no where is this more true than in America)... and here you have idiots exploiting Banksy's work. Sigh.

Banksy Street Art in Los Angeles, by decorum on Feb 27, 2011 3:28:32 GMT 1, with the prices his work fetches im not surprised at all. Gotta face it sooner or later - Banksy is mainstream, popular culture artwork now. Like someone else said before 'if banksy puked on a wall' it would be on the bay within days. An atrocity? a pity? a interesting story? such is life?
Lets have our cake and eat it too.

That image still sends chills down my spine. SO much conveyed in just one simple picture...
