BANKSY - LA Billboard Inside Job, by Wearology on Mar 2, 2011 1:45:55 GMT 1, I have received confirmation that Banksy had permission to tag the billboard in LA. The company that was advertising on the billboard is owned by the same guy that helped finance ETTGS. The billboard was put up with the sole purpose for Banksy to tag it. The billboard is now framed and is hanging in that gentlemen's office. It was Banksy's way of saying thank you. I have been sitting on this story for a few days now but I thought it was best to be shared with our community. Welcome to reality - Banksy 2011

He could have hung it on a wall in his mansion in Hawaii - but yes he chose to hang it in his office - Las Vegas nightlife entrepreneur and real-estate developer is offering for sale his just-finished contemporary mansion in Hawaii, for $21 million.

Nice gesture from Banksy, even if it is a self-serving one.

I thought that according to your source, this was offered for sale for 10K??? is that the case? or not?
heres your previous statement
The street price was $10,000 for this piece. This sign was being cased by several different parties throughout the day. This sign was coming down before dawn legally or illegally no matter what. This sign had more attention in America than the Prince's wedding has in the UK. Everyone with a devious mind was thinking the same thing - the sign is on canvas and can be cut down and than eventually sold as one large piece or 3 individuals pieces. If people are allowed to sell property owned by the Immigration & Naturalization Authority (Sperm Alarm) building in England on EBAY without consequence than people will continue to help themselves to Mr. B's work.

BANKSY - LA Billboard Inside Job, by mmmike on Mar 2, 2011 2:52:56 GMT 1, So who is Banksy then?Is he still the street hustler who once sold t-shirts? Is he the visionary artist? It seems that from the beginning Banksy was a marketer. Painting cows and being controversial. Selling art to celebrities. One of my early posts on this forum was about Banksy doing a commission for Simon Cowell. I asked if Banksy was a sell-out and everyone attacked me. When does he cross the line to being Warhol?
It would be very cool if Banksy didn't care about fame or money and was all about the fans but not everyone is Gandhi or Chomsky. Most of us are not perfect and it is hard to throw stones as we post on a forum where most of the content is debate about the value of his prints. This is a glass house.
I say Banksy should cash in as much as he wants.

The billboard is now in a very well connected rich guy's posession and he has publicly stated that he will never sell it.

BANKSY - LA Billboard Inside Job, by schnulli on Mar 2, 2011 3:21:21 GMT 1, I think it's fine to make money. However, one of the great things about street art is its irreverence. The idea of kissing up to some financier sucks to me. I wanted Banksy to be Robin Hood. My mistake, I guess.
And my guess is....all quiet now from Banksy for a bit, then popping up in time to max out at the Royal Wedding

Well with the info here it is hard to say he is "kissing up". Nothing wrong with thanking someone who helped you out. Who knows not all rich guys are a holes. Maybe he was a nice guy who Banksy likes. I don't think it was sucking up because he already got the cash and I'm sure he will have no problem getting financing for another movie if he wants or financing for just about any project. so I'd guess there was more to it.

I heard somewhere, "selling out is the new ' keeping it real'".

BANKSY - LA Billboard Inside Job, by naughtyshorty on Mar 2, 2011 9:14:52 GMT 1, Just a sec, I really do not get what the issue is here at all. Banksy has a reputation for thanking people with art when they help him out with prints, shows or installations. How is this any different? Banksy wanted to make a film and to do that properly, that costs serious $$$. Someone helped him out, the film was a success, and Banksy thanked him.
Whats the issue with that? It's hardly selling out

BANKSY - LA Billboard Inside Job, by Cedric Mnich on Mar 2, 2011 11:42:15 GMT 1, Was it even painted on site ? I personnally was amazed that, given the size, no one even saw him painting it. I heard it is placed on a very very busy road. I bet cars drive by at any hour of the day and night and everyone now has iphones or camera phones. And NO ONE saw him ? If he had painted it onsite, there would be pics of him in action. I'd bet it was painted in a studio or warehouse and then setup quickly during night (not even by Banksy). So yeah, it was a promotion billboard for the Oscars and his movie. I personnally don't care if he is a Sell-out. He is a great artist, that's enough for me (and I don't own anything by him).

No way in hell it was painted on site, it would have been painted and then swapped. That was to big and detailed to have been done in one hit like that.
Its been mentioned on another thread, but unfortunately the picture of the billboard the day before says nothing. Notice how they were very quick to put a replacement back on the panel once the banksy one was torn down.

BANKSY - LA Billboard Inside Job, by Wearology on Mar 2, 2011 13:29:40 GMT 1, I previously said that the street asking price was approximately $10,000 to obtain the billboard piece. One thing has nothing to do with the other. I don't get your point of bringing that up. That was before I knew that the pieces was quasi commissioned. My most recent revelation has nothing to do with that statement. The billboard is now in a very well connected rich guy's posession and he has publicly stated that he will never sell it. Pretty sure you said you knew the guy and the work was being chopped into 3 pieces to sell[/quote This is 100% INCORRECT - I never said I knew the guy and that the work was being chopped into 3 pieces. What I actually said was and I quote - "Everyone with a devious mind was thinking the same thing - the sign is on canvas and can be cut down and than eventually sold as one large piece or 3 individuals pieces".

BANKSY - LA Billboard Inside Job, by Wearology on Mar 2, 2011 13:42:35 GMT 1, I have received confirmation that Banksy had permission to tag the billboard in LA. Welcome to reality - Banksy 2011 I thought that according to your source, this was offered for sale for 10K??? is that the case? or not? heres your previous statement The street price was $10,000 for this piece. B's work. You have taken my post completely out of context - when asked how I heard that the asking price was $10,000 for the billboard I posted the following response - "The 10K number came from the TMZ report".

BANKSY - LA Billboard Inside Job, by bazzj04 on Mar 2, 2011 13:55:15 GMT 1, I think people are too caught up in what Banksy does and what for , just like the image, at the end of the day banksy is human im sure of it, and would act in a way many of us would , If you can honestly see your self doing things differntly then i commend you but honestly im sure most people would have done this. Banksy is a business like it or not, ever since day one he was a brand and idea, im sure he always wanted to make it in the art world and make a living out of it, he has acheieved his goal, Those who are anti establishment and keen to be seen as not selling out, need to wake up a little or stick to the fact that you may not make enough money to do all the things you wish, but be happy in the fact that you are not selling out,. even if ultimatly no one cares if you do. . Its the way of the world. He makes good Art so who gives a shit, Of course Banksy work hints at anti establishment and does touch upon certain important points in todays society, but if he didnt his work would not be half as interesting, he touched on a theme an idea and stuck with it. Ultimatly he is great at creating publicty. I bet he drinks coke, wheres Addidas whilst he is on his holidays to Disney Land, stops of in Mc D's for a bite to eat then back to his Massive holiday rental where the maids and servants have prepared his dinner for the evening.
