Not really that surprising.. Most big contemporary artists have tons of assistant doing their work for them, they just end up signing in the end. Jeff Koons had more than 100 assistants producing his artwork.. As someone said earlier in this thread, the only things that matter to the artist is the idea and the fact that the creative process is made following their ideas (colour, shape...).

I don't agree with that at all dude, I think an artist should bloody well work on their own product. Anyone can sit there and have ideas, it's the execution that separates an artist from a fantasist (like me). It's insulting to find out that a so called respected artist is so far up his/her own arse that they can't even be bothered to do their own work. I'm not sure what made this an acceptable practice but to me it's wrong on many levels. (rant over )

with all due respect Warmgun, you work in the building trade yeah?
well, has anyone ever heard of a famous electrician? plumber? what about a highly skilled stone mason?
nope.
have you heard of Lord Foster? Frank Gehry? Herzog and De Meuron?
this is the point, you train enough monkeys (no disrespect to the OP, or yourself) and they can do a job for you but only the very best conceptualists can envisage such defining work, both in terms of Architecture and Art and anything else creative for that matter.

It wasn't my opinion, I was just stating facts about how they proceed. I never said that at any point I was agreeing with that practice. But it's funny when I hear people scream about Brainwash when they make bloody apologies about Hirst or Koons.
I was explaining that since maybe Warhol, top contemporary artists have worked like that (Banksy do that as well to some extent) and it's a fact. Public opinion also shifted when art critics started to say that the important thing is the supervision of the whole process (ie the Warhol portrait controversy where the Foundation rejected some of the portraits because Warhol wasn't physically there to supervise their making when he signed it and gave certificate of them)

Yes but architects design their own buildings don't they, that is their job, to design a building that meets it's customers demands. They put pen to paper and capture whats in their minds eye, the same with film directors, writers, poets, musicians and photographers etc....do you honestly think that artists shouldn't have to 'get dirty'? just because they have an idea?.....You hold these charlatans in to high esteem. I'm pretty sure Michelangelo sculpted David himself and Cunstable painted The Hay wain with his own brush. They were artists, pompous little mummy boys who develop other peoples ideas but can not execute them themselves through lack of skill are not (imo)
BTW, I've never heard of a famous roofer either. (with due disrespect)

lol! ;D
i actually don't disagree with you Warmgun but i don't agree either, if that makes sense? yes an Architect designs the building but they too don't get their hands dirty and i'm sure the Hirsts etc 'design' all of their work, even if they don't get their hands dirty.
either way, i can totally understand your dislike of the process but personally speaking it wouldn't upset me too much to know that the artist didn't physically create a piece of art so long as they conceived it.

Rose Popay - Spin Paintings, by Rose Popay on Feb 12, 2011 0:46:19 GMT 1, i would say put it in a proper auction. this isn't necessarily your best market for a work of this calibre. i don't really understand your perspective; a lot of the themes in your work seem very, recycled www.rosepopay.bigcartel.com/
what you dont understand my perspective on my work do you mean?... have you seen my www.rosepopay.co.uk site?- my drawing works
then theres www.thearttart.com
but maybe best s to watch this film i made
in it i play an art therapist and 4 exoffenders each representing a different style of my art!
I do performance character work all over the world- funny street theatre generally
as well as my own Art....
