Well banks do have lots of money = power = political influence. Are you surprised? In this economic system this is to be expected. As well not all areas of the banks would have been unprofitable. In order to keep those high performing bankers they need to pay market rates and bonuses. the banks are not to blame here it is all of us who allow this type of non democratic economic system to continue. If you don't like it ask your self what you have done to try to get money out of politics and make real change?
You may not agree with the methods but at least the rioters are doing something.

Going right off on Stokes Croft Tesco videos, by Deleted on Apr 23, 2011 22:14:59 GMT 1, I use our local shops as often as I run out of stuff and haven't got time to go to a supermarket. ASDA is much cheaper than Tesco's. However we have a Tesco express about 1/2mile away. Its so much cheaper than the local shop, what choice do you have with 4 young kids and an art addiction?. One example Milk local shop £3.00 per 6 pints. Tesco's £3.85 for 12 pints. ASDA I am pretty sure is £3.50 for 12 pints. therefore shopping at local shops ends up costing me any spare cash that I would be able to spend on my family. No doubt saving well over a grand per year on items that you can only get in the local shop. Id rather support the local economy than 50p on a bit of milk
i think you've missed what i said. the local shop is £3.00 for 6 pints. ASDA is £3.50 for 12. thats a huge difference when you have 7 people living in a 3 bed house over the course of a year.

You can save a few quid but it'll be your fault when your local shops close and leave you without a community, crime will rise, everyone becomes faceless and the area is left without a backbone. But it'll be ok because you saved money and now you've got it to spend on a new TV or some art for your house.

I've got 4 children five years old and under and I work at a hostel for homeless people, which pays s**t money, i do this because I've been homeless myself for a couple of years and know what its like when you have 'very little money' to live on. Which can be confirmed by many on here.
If you have got enough money to buy everything from your local shops thats great. I've got one local shop, well 2 if you include the BNP supporting hairdresser(who I rather not give my money to). They are lovely, but much more expensive. I choose to use them when it's convenient and as I said before they are lovely. If I shopped only locallymy family and I would be homeless within a year, that would include me having to sell all my art, which I don't want to do, but would have no choice.
How much money do you earn?,how many kids do you have?, how big is your mortgage? and do you have some spare at the end of it all.
Because I my friend have f**k all, nothing !!. My collection is here, literally by buying and selling bits and bobs, until I've happily come to the point, where i don't need any more art.
I will never be responsible for destroying the local community(you no nothing about where I live for starters).
It's my family that would be destroyed, if we didn't have choice of where to shop and my family and I would end up homeless, having been through this already. I am not prepared to choose to go through it again. Having a blue name doesn't mean you have money. I'll end my rant there and can't be f**ked to proof read it.

Going right off on Stokes Croft Tesco videos, by psycho666 on Apr 24, 2011 10:39:49 GMT 1, I try to shop wherever it is cheapest. I'm living by myself and have a mortgage to pay and need to save every penny I can.
I do shop in some of the local shops but I also shop in Tesco and Sainsbury's.
I also do a lot of my shopping online (clothes, books, DVDs, etc) because it's a lot cheaper (online deals and cash back) and convenient than going to my local shops.
I'm sure the internet is as much to blame for the closure of local shops as places like Tesco. I wonder how many of the people protesting against Tesco also shop online...
Psycho666
PS. I lose all interest or respect for anyone who has to resort to violence. Especially when it turns out they come from well off families!

Going right off on Stokes Croft Tesco videos, by tobaum on Apr 24, 2011 11:54:45 GMT 1, I'm based in Belgium where there is no tesco but there is very similar situation in each country. I think what mmmike explains in theory make sense. Lot of sense. The vicious cycle. It's illustrated by what UPC-Slammer said. The point is in the real life people don't have the choice. Unfortunately the problem with vicious cycles is that you don't see it until it is too late. It makes me think to a scientific fact I like. If you put frogs into boiling water, they will jump out. If you put frogs into cold water and put the fire on, the frogs will stay in the water until they die. I do not agree with criminality (to broke things, starting fire, etc) but honestly I can understand the need for riot.
Something surprised me with the comments on the forum. How many of us have riot related artworks on their walls (Banky, D*Face, ect)? But a real riot is not ok? It makes me wonder what is the purpose of those artists? Illustrating a point of vue, some kind of pacific riot? But who is touched by this art? Which public? I don't think it is made for governments to pay attention. For example, the Mild mild west piece illustrated in the videos. It is a really strong piece. In your opinion does this piece encourage people to riot (a sweet young teddy bear with all his weakness against very protected riot cops representing the unfair authority)? Or does this piece shows there is another way to riot, for example painting on the walls? Or does this piece shows there is no point to riot in the streets because in the end you will stay a helpless teddybear? How does people understand this piece? I'm not talking about Banksy's message but about the feeling of the quidam who see this piece for the first time.

Contrasted against a Royal family spending millions of pounds of our money on a wedding and also big business owners and bankers giving them selves huge bonuses and living life better than they ever have before or we could ever dream of, doesn't anyone ever think they love to see people getting a bit upset about a Tesco opening on a small high street, as it takes the focus off the real problems affecting the average person trying to scrape a living in these times.

Of course it is the reason why but I don't think people go in the streets in the middle of the nights just because of tesco. People are massively pissed off and when there is a cause to join they are more inclined to join it.

Let me get this straight. I am against Tesco's going about things in the manner in which they are doing them. I would be the first to protest if they decided to build one near my local shop. My Mum had a fancy dress shop for 20 years, all of a suddden the local 'ASDA' start selling cheap as fuck fancy dress and the shop was shut down. So I have direct experience, perhaps as much as anyone of how these Tesco etc can effect local communities and have effected my own family.
I'm not saying I'm broke, I'm just saying that shopping at ASDA or where ever makes life affordable. Not sure if your comment was aimed at me or not. Either way these are some more of my experiences and opinions.
