Going right off on Stokes Croft Tesco videos, by Rsyok on Apr 22, 2011 22:46:01 GMT 1, Guardian coverage traces the origins of Banksy/rioting to 1837 !!
Poor Tesco my heart bleeds
"Banksy and Massive Attack didn't come out of nowhere โ there's a reason why they are from Bristol," says sociologist and Bristolian David Goldblatt. He believes the latest riot is part of a larger history of the public taking over open spaces in the city, which dates back 700 years to the St James's fair.
The fair, held on free ground close to Stokes Croft, attracted people from all over Europe but was banned in 1837 after the drinking, gambling, bear baiting and prostitution became too much for the local aldermen." www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2011/apr/22/bristol-riot-police-injured

Theres been a huge campaign for ages against there being a Tesco in Stokes Croft. Didn't see this coming though.

Going right off on Stokes Croft Tesco videos, by MGK1 on Apr 23, 2011 8:36:55 GMT 1, why?
i love tesco (especially the reduced to clear section!) i would be campaigning for one
the protestors in the video are just anarchists though, they probably don't care wether there is a tesco or not and just want to cause some damage

You obviously don't know much about the Stokes Croft area.

Because they ruin the local economy and pretty much are the cause of most local shops closing in the areas that they set up.

Maybe your office job stops it effecting you, but a lot of people are butchers, green grocers, own clothing and video shops or maybe even a fish mongers, bakerys and photo developing stores.
All of which could eventually shut down due to lost custom to the 'super' market. It happened in my home town and is also happening up and down the country.

I don't have an office job i am a framer with my own business , if Tesco opened a framing department i would be buggered but that is unfortunately the nature of the beast if my product is not good enough or convenient enough or cheap enough i am going to lose out people want the best deal / best job they can for their limited funds and they will vote with their feet which again brings me around to my original point that Tesco like it or loath it is what people want

Going right off on Stokes Croft Tesco videos, by Deleted on Apr 23, 2011 11:24:41 GMT 1, I use our local shops as often as I run out of stuff and haven't got time to go to a supermarket. ASDA is much cheaper than Tesco's. However we have a Tesco express about 1/2mile away. Its so much cheaper than the local shop, what choice do you have with 4 young kids and an art addiction?. One example Milk local shop ยฃ3.00 per 6 pints. Tesco's ยฃ3.85 for 12 pints. ASDA I am pretty sure is ยฃ3.50 for 12 pints. therefore shopping at local shops ends up costing me any spare cash that I would be able to spend on my family. No doubt saving well over a grand per year on items that you can only get in the local shop.

People thinking they have the right to choose what shops others are allowed to use if they don't like Tesco, just don't shop there.
These people have some serious problems

The riot was originally about squatters being evicted and not tesco. It was just targeted by slack jaw local anarchic bristolians. Of course they shop there, where else would they spend their dole money on fags and ยฃ6 vodka.
