Is Banksy this chapters Warhol?, by pezlow on Dec 31, 2010 16:50:57 GMT 1, But remember Shep produces about a billion prints a day. If you value of the work is how you want to measure success or importance, I'm pretty sure the value of all the work Shep has put out, far exceeds Banksy's work. But neither comes anywhere near Koons or Hirst.
And koons and hirst are a long way behind a number of other contemporary artists in terms of record auction prices - richter, Richard prince, Lucien Freud etc etc.
I don't measure success or importance on price but the art market does tend to view things in that way. And right now banksy is by some distance the most commercial of the current street artists producing work.

That is what Pop art was all about. "fine art" became accessible to the masses. Taking pop culture and making it art.
For sure the marketing of his work was big so was the factory concept. Wow Warhol really did change things in so many ways.
Banksy is one of my favorites but come on he is no Warhol. The more I think about it the absurd the comparison is.

In terms of total dollar value of all the art produced, I think Koons and Hirst are on top for living artists. Again for street art Shep puts out so much the total worth must be several times that of Banksy.
It would be interesting to see if they had all put out the same quantity of work if values would be comparable.

I'm struggling with trying to figure out what we are trying to measure?
I agree they are two very different measures. It might be that neither is meaningful. My thinking was if you are comparing in terms of popularity volume should play a role.
The artists output certainly plays a part in the value of individual works.
The reason I go t on this tangent in the first place was I was trying to say just because an individual Banksy sells for more than a similar piece by Shep, it does not mean Shep is less popular.

Is Banksy this chapters Warhol?, by pezlow on Dec 31, 2010 18:15:56 GMT 1, Not less popular true but less commercial yes. Volume of output is not the way that most indexes compute who the leading artists are, it isn't a valid measure. Anyway I agree with you that prices and value are boring so let's leave that alone from now on, it was only an aside from me and I don't really want this interesting thread turned into another thread about prices...

Is Banksy this chapters Warhol?, by Warm Gun on Dec 31, 2010 18:34:51 GMT 1, The world had moved on since Warhol. Banksy doesn't have to be seen at hip parties in order to get on in the art world as Warhol did. In fact banksy's relative anonymity is IMHO likely to be of a help than a hindrance in developing banksy the brand. It has moved on indeed, we're more obsessed with celebrity status than ever, that's why he'll never figure in the public consciousness as much as Warhol did/does. Banksy fans a small clique of people compared the the global appeal of Warhol.

Warhol was the equivalent of the beatles, in the respect that there was not much else going on at the time...which is why they were popular. We arre not talking about comparing banksy directly to warhol, thats not the point of this thread.
We are not in the pop art movement... That belonged to warhol. We are in the street art movement, so are you saying that banksy will not be at the forefront of this like warhol was with pop art?

Is Banksy this chapters Warhol?, by skitchy on Dec 31, 2010 18:43:30 GMT 1, CHANGE OF DIRECTION... to save me starting a new thread.
Is anyone here aware of how Warhol prints (which are now priceless) were released??
How much were they from cost?
did he have a banksy type following/anticipation for releases?
Would be interesting to compare...?

My word.

Yup. THE most over rated band in History.

I'm not too up on 60's music. Not sure what was going on at the time but I'm sure we can all agree aside from Eminem, Jay Z is the most overrated rapper of all time.

Is Banksy this chapters Warhol?, by Wearology on Dec 31, 2010 22:45:32 GMT 1, Woodstock was a big deal in the 60's - but some performers before the 3 day event thought it was going to be a bust and declined an invite to perform at the historical event - just goes to show you can never predict how history will unfold - just like Banksy !!!!!! Cancelled Acts Jeff Beck Group (The band broke up in July, forcing cancellation) Iron Butterfly (Stuck at the airport, their manager demanded helicopters and special arrangements just for them. Were wired back and told, as impolitely as Western Union would allow, "to get lost", but in other 'words'.) Joni Mitchell (Joni's agent put her on "The Dick Cavett Show" instead) Lighthouse (Feared that it would be a "bad scene".) Ethan Brown (Arrested for LSD three days before the event.) Declined Invitations The Beatles (John Lennon said he couldn't get them together) Led Zeppelin (Got a higher paying gig at the Asbury Park Convention Hall in New Jersey that weekend) Bob Dylan (Turned it down because of his disgust of the hippies hanging around his house) The Byrds (Turned it down because of a melee during their performance at the first Atlanta International Pop Festival, held at the Atlanta International Raceway on July 4 and July 5, 1969) Tommy James & the Shondells (Turned it down because of being misinformed about the size and scope of the event) Jethro Tull (Turned it down because they thought it wouldn't be a big deal.) The Moody Blues were included in the original posters as performers, but backed out after taking a gig in Paris on the same weekend. Spirit (they had other shows planned and did not want to back out of their commitments; not knowing how big that Woodstock would ultimately become) Mind Garage (Declined because they thought it wouldn't be a big deal and had a higher paying gig elsewhere)

Is Banksy this chapters Warhol?, by enricopalazzo on Dec 31, 2010 23:58:38 GMT 1, Though I didn't think I thought this before reading the question, I'd put it to you that Banksy = Warhol in the sense that each was responsible for causing a surge in growth of the the number of people who consider themselves art-aware & taking an interest in art.
And that, by consequence, both will end up in a position in which they are both dominant within their respective genres as well as having one foot in the establishment - simply because of the loyalty of their core audiences on the one hand & those people's participation in the broader arts scene on the other.
They differ in the sense that Warhol is simply on a bigger scale at this stage &, arguably, the field for launching big ideas (and the thirst for them) was broader in the 60's.
...Which shouldn't contradict the fact that The Beatles were unquestionably unique & deservedly dominant within a very strong era of music. Has anyone ever worked harder & created more in 8 years or so of existence?
And a happy new year to all forum members.

Banksy will still be big in years to come and his work will be highly sort after even more so than now. He will go down in history but he will not be the biggest living artists of 'our' time. I'm not sure who that is but probably Hirst.
IMO the Beetles are over rated just like any boy band..

Is Banksy this chapters Warhol?, by Lunch Special on Jan 1, 2011 14:40:36 GMT 1, I love Banksy but IMO he doesn't have a chance. Banksy may become as famous as Warhol, as popular but he isn't changing what people consider art, how people look at art, how people look at the world in general like Warhol did. Warhol changed the game. Banksy is one of the most interesting current players in the game. Banksy is building on what Haring and many others have built up.
Very strange but i think that although Banksy's name isn't as famous as Warhol or Haring,(YET) he has definitely changed the three things you mention:
He has changed what people consider art because until he started using RATS as subjects (not only but using an example) of expression and how he views modern day society, no one would of thought of an old road sign was worth anything more than an old dirty copper penny, or how about the way city councils have ordered certain acts of vandalism, graffiti in other words to be covered and preserved at the cities cost with perspex or what have you
He hasn't and never will change the way people look at art because to my best understanding, they all still look with there eyes ;D just kidding, But in all reality, has he not conquered the big screen with ETTGS? Hasn't the elusiveness of his identity and the misery of MBW changed or opened up the minds of people as to what is graff and what is street art?
I think we can all agree that some of his installations, messages as well as original images and prints have opened up more than just our eyes and such to the current events of your world and mine
He has and will continue to build of the anonymity that is the BANKSY and all it defines to be who he is.
I think what makes BANKSY so comparable to ANDY WARHOL(RIP) and KEITH HARING(RIP) is how each one were unique in the way they reinvented what the word art meant to them.

I think what makes BANKSY so comparable to ANDY WARHOL(RIP) and KEITH HARING(RIP) is how each one were unique in the way they reinvented what the word art meant to them.

Is Banksy this chapters Warhol?, by colinfishwick on Jan 1, 2011 18:27:11 GMT 1, Out of all the people I socialize or work with, I'd say that there were half a dozen that have heard or Banksy or know what he does. I'd hasten to guess that they'd all know of Warhol.
this is interesting because for me it's the complete opposite, mostly young males, under 40 with only a basic school education and who would deem X-Factor to be culture and KFC fine dining.
i'm not saying Banksy is dumbing down, far from it, more so that he is class-less and un-elitest - his range of appeal is so broad that i'll bet his work hangs on walls from Mayfair to Margate and everywhere in between.

Come on Hooker. You're better than this quote. You have ZERO idea which works are being sold and who's buying it.
Tough love man.

You say he's un-elitist but he sells prints to VIPs.
I'm not sure he knows what he is anymore. How an anti-establishment, anti-royalist, anti-police illegal graff artist ends up selling special prints to VIPs and doing commissions to satan's spawn, Simon 'nob-ed' Cowell is all very confusing. He's a sell out but I love to hate him.
As an aside I'm going to ask my workmates if they know who Warhol is, I just assumed they would.
