Is Banksy this chapters Warhol?, by OutsideIn on Jan 2, 2011 12:35:13 GMT 1, CHANGE OF DIRECTION... to save me starting a new thread. Is anyone here aware of how Warhol prints (which are now priceless) were released?? How much were they from cost? did he have a banksy type following/anticipation for releases? Would be interesting to compare...?
bump the questions above. very interesting.

Is Banksy this chapters Warhol?, by Nico on Jan 2, 2011 14:56:54 GMT 1, Worth a watch:
On Sky Arts, today at 2pm:
"Andy Warhol's Factory People"
Tells the story of the 60โs Silver Factory that Andy founded in 1964 in an abandoned hat factory on East 47th Street in New York City. The Silver Factory lasted until 1968 when Andy gave up the lease and moved to the White Factory on Union Square. Shortly after moving in the Spring of โ68 Andy was shot by Valerie Solanas and this event bookends the period of time covered in โFactory Peopleโ.

Is Banksy this chapters Warhol?, by colinfishwick on Jan 2, 2011 15:21:21 GMT 1, this is interesting because for me it's the complete opposite, mostly young males, under 40 with only a basic school education and who would deem X-Factor to be culture and KFC fine dining. i'm not saying Banksy is dumbing down, far from it, more so that he is class-less and un-elitest - his range of appeal is so broad that i'll bet his work hangs on walls from Mayfair to Margate and everywhere in between. You say he's un-elitist but he sells prints to VIPs. I'm not sure he knows what he is anymore. How an anti-establishment, anti-royalist, anti-police illegal graff artist ends up selling special prints to VIPs and doing commissions to satan's spawn, Simon 'nob-ed' Cowell is all very confusing. He's a sell out but I love to hate him. As an aside I'm going to ask my workmates if they know who Warhol is, I just assumed they would.
very fair point Warmgun and one i should immediately qualify, i meant that you don't have to have a degree in fine art or be on the buyers list at a 'by appointment only' gallery up West, by saying un-elitist i simply meant that art on the street is for everyone from the aristocrat to the bin man. many people i know who like Banksy have no interest whatsoever in collecting him, other than say a Wall & Piece book and an Exit DVD.
just to take up your point about private sales and buyers list's etc, this is only my opinion but i believe to Banksy they are a necessary evil - a means to an end if you like. he's released one print in 2010 and all proceeds were donated, yes the film will be making him some money but to fund the way he does his thing on the street, studio rental costs etc he needs some serious cash coming in and the quickest, easiest and most reliable way of doing that is by selling to a select clientele at a vastly inflated premium and this afford him the ability to sell you and i prints for ยฃ450.

Is Banksy this chapters Warhol?, by Lunch Special on Jan 2, 2011 16:29:30 GMT 1, The question should really be, Why is everyone always trying to compare Banksy to someone else and not only continue to try and interpret who he is and why he does what he does?
We all know Warhol lived a drug fueled social circle boy loving paint splashing party hopping print and film making life in where Banksy is in a sense the complete opposite, Banksy remans anonymous, issues prints once a year, pokes fun at the very world he assumes responsibility for and lives in yet striking where he may as a thief in the night

Is Banksy this chapters Warhol?, by boaty on Jan 3, 2011 0:34:59 GMT 1, forget warhol, for a minute...why did Banksy CHOOSE to publicly align himself and associate with Haring at this stage, through the CYW print?..what is it about Haring he appreciated, or not?
just want to understand where Banksy, the artist, is now...heck with the print release etc...what's he conveying?

I don't think he set out to align himself with Haring but that the piece was a continuation and development of the idea behind the "Guard with Koons balloon dog"..which was ok if not a little ambivalent in it's meaning.. Guard, Security, Protection, Art etc.. a fun piece but maybe not so clear.. The Haring dog is spot on in that respect, "Choose your weapon"?... I choose art, education, graffiti etc. Not dissimilar to the "Art/Education" phase that went through "conscious" raising Hip Hop. A call to arms for the dispossessed to stop fighting and get educated. Choose your Weapon.. I choose art. I think it reflects the scene really well. I guess a few in the CYW queue could have done with an attack dog at times...

Is Banksy this chapters Warhol?, by Happy Shopper on Jan 3, 2011 11:29:36 GMT 1, To me Banksy is the total opposite of Warhol... and Haring. They were about commercialism and mass market (not in a bad way, it was part of their statement on society) Hirst, Murakami and Kaws cover that category today, although taking it in their own directions.
I feel Banksy is more punk, like Jamie Reid, it's not about the money. Just comments on society... sometimes angry, but sometimes with a smile.

i couldn't agree with this more, the phrase "knowledge is power" has never been more relevant than it is now. in a literal sense at the time Banksy put this on the street there was a big story in the media about how organised gangs/criminals were increasingly using dogs as a form of intimidation and at times violence.
considering that, i think the fact that he has used Haring in this piece sends out a message that you should enlighten and educate yourself instead of having to resort to violence, a take on the pen being mightier than the sword if you like.
as it happens, there was a young guy at the front of the queue who went off after the raffle tickets were given out and when he came back he had a pretty fierce looking dog on a leash - the irony was not lost to a few us in the queue.....

on a side note, the 'ambivalent' meaning you give to the US koons/security piece maybe slightly misplaced once you take into account koons once said 'luxury and abstraction are the guard dogs of the upper class' and the piece was on Doug Christmas's property and was subsequently denounced as a Banksy when he tried to sell.....
I like to think at least part of this meaning made it into the UK version in a rejigged fashion

Is Banksy this chapters Warhol?, by Daniel Silk on May 21, 2021 5:47:00 GMT 1, I think a lot of it comes down to how well known the Artists name is to the general public, those who are not interested in Art. Most people have heard the Name Andy Warhol, even if they couldnโt reliably recognise a piece of his art, so Banksy is doing really well in the way that people probably recognise his work even more than Warhol, and even to the extent that in many cases all street art images are attributed to Banksy.
