art can be as cheap or as expensive as you want it to be, it definatley isn't just 'a rich mans hobby' bought some lovely stuff over the last few weeks which cost less than ยฃ50. i am only guessing here, but i would say that at least 90% of people on this forum were into art when judgement day was released, even if you couldn't make it to santas ghetto or were one of the lucky few to get one from pow when they went up briefly, have had the chance to buy one of ebay from around the ยฃ550 to ยฃ680 mark for months. if you didn't pick one up then well, it aint anyones fault, but your own. if you don't like the way the art market operates, i would say stay away from it, especially ebay. it is hard to have everything you want in life. i sold a judgement day when i needed the cash for ยฃ560 and although it would be lovely to have got more for it, you won't catch me moaning about it. MrH is a decent bloke who has done favours for forum members(so i am reliably told), so let him spend his cash however he likes and lets put this childishness to bed.

JD with BIn on ebay sale, by misteraitch on Jul 13, 2007 11:04:21 GMT 1, Ok, this is my last response to this thread as it’s become far too personal for my liking:
Just to clarify, I never came on the forum to gloat at how much the JD cost me - I came on in response to the fact that I was unwittingly named in an earlier thread as the person who purchased the print at the (overpriced) BIN price. To be honest I'd rather nobody knew that I’d bought it, but unfortunately anyone can watch an item on ebay and see the resulting cost and the winning bidder. So once my name was mentioned I thought it only fair to respond
I work damned hard for my money therefore I can do whatever as I see fit with it, whether that’s buying a copyright print at a recent show for ยฃ75 or my Judgement Day for more money than sense. The money didn’t come out of anyone’s account but mine so I really don’t see the issue. I think the real issue is that certain individuals will now crawl out of the woodwork and cite my auction as justification for their greed, a fact that was mentioned earlier. However, due to the responses I’ve received regarding my purchase I can’t really see them making a sale, so if no-one else is prepared to pay that kind of price then I can see their prices coming down
As for stating that Art is a rich mans pursuit - I meant no such thing – it was purely a childish response to an earlier statement directed at me. There are people on the forum that rely on the ยฃ50 thread, including me, just as much as those who are serious art collectors. What’s important to me is the image, and if I like it I’ll buy it, whether it’s ยฃ50, ยฃ1600 or ยฃ2500. There are others that purchase purely to sell on for immediate profit – so who’s more of a bad guy me or them? As an aspiring artist myself, if I thought it was a rich mans pursuit I’d hike up my prices significantly, but instead I try to keep the price of the art that I produce at a low cost as I’d rather it was affordable to everyone and not just a select few.
My only crime is paying what I was prepared to pay for a print that I really wanted, and for that I have been called a fool, stupid and a tosser. Ok, so you're all entitled to your opinions, and I like a good laugh with the rest of you but when it becomes an unfounded personal attack, or childish name calling because someone is upset, then I'll respond accordingly.
I apologise to anyone that I have offended or upset because of my recent purchase

JD with BIn on ebay sale, by Strange Al on Jul 13, 2007 12:33:54 GMT 1, I completely agree that: i) JD is a great piece; ii) Mr Aitch can do what he likes with his money and has nothing to apologise for; iii) pkt75 hasn't conveyed his point in a particularly constructive manner; iv) personal attacks are absolutely uncalled for and shouldn't be tolerated; and v) it's about time this debate was put to bed.
However, I do think the underlying issue which pkt has raised is very valid and shouldn't be dismissed out of hand. Although you can draw many parallels between the street art market and the art market more generally, IMO they are very different in certain respects. Particularly, at this end of the market. While I fully accept that a single sale on Ebay does not determine the long term value of a piece of art, in the street art market it can have a major impact on the perceived value of a print. As an aside, for me this fact illustrates just how fragile the whole market really is.
As I said above, there's nothing inherently wrong with Mr Aitch spending what he thinks is a reasonable sum and no apologies are necessary. Though, fact is because of that one sale at well over the odds, JD's are now commanding substantially more today than a couple of weeks ago. Compare FF and SMS, both of which have traditionally been considered more desirable and neither of which have regularly commanded ยฃ2.5K. Meanwhile an Ebay seller refuses offers of well over ยฃ2K for their JD. The chance of PKT or anyone else securing a JD for under ยฃ2K between now and the LA show are greatly diminished because of that one sale. Getting one for under ยฃ2K after the LA show will probably be nigh on impossible. OK, you can argue the mantra "you snooze you lose". Though, without that one sale things would still look very different IMO and maybe pkt would still have had time to save enough money to buy a print he loves. Neither he nor anyone else could have predicted that someone would pay almost ยฃ1K more for a print than the going rate.

JD with BIn on ebay sale, by manchestermike on Jul 13, 2007 13:00:44 GMT 1, I want that signed Bombhugger that I was offered last year for ยฃ400... but people paid more and the prices went up I want that 21st Century Love for ยฃ500... but people paid more and the prices went up
What is the "going rate"? If you like it and can afford it then buy it or mark my words, you'll regret it... ignore the "going rate" there is no such thing.
Look at the Laz Micallef prints - I love them and I know they'll go up in value, but once again I'm umming and ahhing about something... kind of like when I missed the Banksy 4 soupcan Laz prints... I'll probably kick myself for it again
Judgement Day is one of THE prints of the last couple of years, it's phenomenal and I personally think Mr Aitch got something of a bargain with this one - those people who bought it for less a total bargain.
I guess what I'm trying to say is prices will go up, so if you're not sure about it, and can afford it then buy it now... don't wait or you'll be kicking yourself. If you can't afford it don't whine about it, buy something else - there is so much stuff I want that I can't afford, so what, there is lots about I can...

Interesting point about SMS and FF. FF is an edition of 250 and although it was ยฃ 50.00 less than JD when originally issued (ยฃ 250.00) I would have thought that just the fact that the edition size is half that of JD would mean it would command more. There is an FF on ebay at the moment so we shall see. Ebay is a very strange beast and seems to be the barometer by which prices are judged (Inevitably if a print suddenly goes for alot more than it had previously fetched, then the galleries see this and up thieir prices accordingly. This in turn hypes up the level of perceived desirability and so the engine turns. The other important factor here is that since a year has passed the baggers and flippers will have moved this print on long ago and now the supply has dried up the prints that are appearing are most likely because some owners are seeing the high prices that these prints now command and are then tempted to sell. It is very strange how quickly prices have hiked up over the last month and there is now a sudden clamour for prints that were previously available for much less.

JD with BIn on ebay sale, by Strange Al on Jul 13, 2007 19:56:23 GMT 1, Mike - you know as well as I do that there is such a thing as a "going rate". At this end of the street art market the "going rate" tends to be the price at which the prints sell on Ebay, i.e., Ebay is the barometer people use to determine what the market value is (as Alvington already said). The last JD to sell on Ebay before Mr Aitch's, sold on Jul 5 and went for ยฃ1.5K. I'd suggest that was the going rate at the time. If you need further proof, look at the numerous other offers made on the JD Mr Aitch bought - they were all below ยฃ1.5K. So, what happened in the 5 days between the two sales for values to almost double? Nothing.
I completely agree that prices for Micallef's work are on the up and that they are likely (though not guaranteed) to continue to rise until well after the LA show and British Museum tour. If I was looking at artists in the "scene", I'd definitely say that Mic is one of the better bets for someone who has the potential for a great long term career. He's a talented artist and his imagery has wide general appeal, plus his name is already being mentioned in the right circles.
Though whether prices will definitely continue to rise and, more importantly, are sustainable in the long term is a completely different matter. I've said it before, but that's very much dependent on numerous external factors - most of which we have absolutely no information about or control over. This is one of the main reasons I generally don't get involved in discussions on value - too much speculation in a market which IMO is actually pretty unstable. I think living by the general mantra โbuy while you can or you may end up kicking yourselfโ is incredibly dangerous in this market. For me the only mantra is and always will be โbuy what you enjoy and spend what you can afford to loseโ. Funnily enough, I think thatโs exactly what Mr Aitch did. Just so happens he drove the prices up in doing so.

Just so happens he drove the prices up in doing so.

very well put.
I have probably the best story surrounding the purchase of my JD. I posted a message on another board requesting if anyone was in the UK ( I am in NY) and they would be at the ghetto to piick me up a copy and I offered full cost plus a shat at of their choice.
A guy I never met or spoke to took me up on the offer and even mailed it to me before I paid anything. He carried my print and his prints all over Europe for a couple weeks. Now we chat online on almost a daily basis. And I have an awesome JD. Its nice to know there are still people like that out there.

So are you responsible for the guy's addiction to prints or is this something he had before visiting the Ghetto for you?
