Recession Nearly Over?, by snausages on May 6, 2009 18:19:25 GMT 1, i call this "recovery" bluff. possibly the biggest bear rally in the history of mankind. the bad news, based on facts, keep mounting everyday, outnumbering the good news, which are mostly fluffy stuff based on experts/feds opinions... yet the market rises... there's an old chinese saying... you can't wrap a fire with paper. Recession may still be alive and kicking, I don't know, and I don't know that much about the 'markets' but one thing I have figured out is that the public never gets it right. And that by the time the news is all sunshine and lollipops, and the public finally does come round, the rallies will be past tense. Probably due to the fact that unemployment is about the last to recover.
And why blame just the government? The problem is more of a cultural one. Blame the media and advertising who drives our want and greed. The problem was evident not only in executive board rooms but even lowly internet forums such as banksy.info where greed and desire was in excess for the past two, three years. How many people blew out their credit on 'urban' art? And still the greed and hype exists here to a degree. People never learn.
One simple thing we should learn is that we shouldn't allow corporations to monopolize and become so huge that their failure would decimate our entire economy, which means tax payers have to step in and bail them out. But I don't expect any real change on that front. This history is doomed to repeat.

Recession Nearly Over?, by wiz on May 6, 2009 18:34:25 GMT 1, assuming you were looking to add value to the houses wiz & they knew they were bargain just like you did but they got there first. doesn't mean to say house prices/sales are not suffering.
No Stacey, they are local houses near me and came up at fairly decent prices for this area but certainly not cheap by any means, seems there is a whole bunch with cash ready to pounce! not fussed really as something will come along again.

Recession Nearly Over?, by thegreatarchitect on May 8, 2009 11:53:13 GMT 1, and GA the conservatives are well known for their common touch...
NEW LABOUR are conservatives. The fundamental role of government was to keep people in jobs. When Thatcher came to power in the late 70s she hadn't got a clue but when the proposal of NO PROFIT NO JOB was put in front of her she saw this as a opportunity to smash the unions create a pool of mass unemployment providing a pool of cheap labour for later New labour under Blair has wholeheartedly embraced this scheme and has invested heavily in any nonsensical hairbrain pyramid scheme that was put in front of them Once again it will be the working classes that suffer and ultimately foot this bill Labour is conservative. The last time capitalism saw it self in this much trouble Hitler became chancellor

Recession Nearly Over?, by achtungbono on Jun 8, 2009 20:17:53 GMT 1, Too many people use wisdom derived from the tabloid press to pad their threadbare views on whether a recession is here, coming or over. We cant comoare the 1920's situation with todays economies- it is foolhardy to try to do so, as are opinions that compare like for unlike and decide that a 15 year depression is the only outcome.bad news sells. and like dogshite, bad news sticks.
The truth is- we dont know - economics is like any other social science - the human element ensures that there is no right answer, but many versions of the right answer.
Is the recession over ?
In short - pretty much so in terms of bad news. we are bouncing along the bottom now - how long we will do this is impossible to say. Newpaper reports of the demise of Kapital are rather premature. The Banks are paying back their TARPS, leding is easing up and once more, aquisiton of in the minds of the bankers.
There will be a bull market on the back of this - people WANT to believe things are looking up - and you although you cannot put a financial value on optimism, you can see its side effects. and so can business.
so get those credit cards ready people , in a year or to, this period will be a sepia tinged memory and we will all be jumping on ther good times bandwagon
An interesting thing about humankind is that we dont remember pain - we can recall that it wasnt nice, but our mental firewall keeps it at bay.

Recession Nearly Over?, by veralynn on Jun 9, 2009 8:49:21 GMT 1, Personally think we're not out of the woods yet and there's no 'feel better' factor in my opinion, its a 'feel less worse' factor. The data is still weak although not as weak as it was, just as well really.
There's still a huge shortage of personal credit, and the providers who have liquidity are being very careful where they place it - generic retail business continues to suffer and the property market has supply issues, that's the reason behind the 'recovery' in prices, lack of quality stock. Oh, and there won't be that many new builds going up other than by the big players, just heard that Barclays are not lending money at all on residential development.....

Recession Nearly Over?, by angel41 on Jun 9, 2009 12:16:49 GMT 1, The question is though how long will the fallout last for. There are still a hell of a lot of people out of work as a result of the crash and those jobs aint just gonna re-materialise. We may be through the worst but I expect a few years before things even get close to the way they were.

Things will never get back to where they were.......there are many, many more people who will regretably lose their jobs oover the next 12 months or so. The recession will, in my opinion, be 'w' shaped - there's no 'u'.
Any business, large or small, will tell you that in their search for credit the Banks are kicking the tyres a hell of a lot harder than they did previously - also, anyone recall those 'you've been pre agreed for ยฃ5K of credit' type mailshots from everyone under the sun - where have they gone.....
Sry to be doom and gloom but if you're reading this in London and the South East then your high street is, to some degree, insulated from what's happening in other part of the country..
On a lighter note - it's almost the weekend!

have to admit though, London is still as busy as ever so dont think it is a fair reflection on other parts of the country
