Other places to buy & sell art aside from ebay, by sfdoddsy on Nov 10, 2008 12:40:03 GMT 1, I'd suggest artnet as well:
www.artnet.com/Auctions/Pages/Common/Auction/BrowseAuctions.aspx
They've had a few Banksy pieces lately. but have some other very interesting stuff.
Artprice.com also have a sales section
web.artprice.com/classifieds/fineart/list.aspx?source=all&sh=0&idstore=0&page=1
It's mostly galleries, but they take listing from individuals too.
For buyers, there is also the Saatchi Online gallery sales section:
www.saatchi-gallery.co.uk/saleroom/
Apparently it is the most popular art site on the web.
For me, if you want to buy or sell street art, then eBay or here is still your best bet. Those into the scene seem just fine dealing with both. 'Fine' art is trickier. It's much harder to buy and sell and trade.
This is one of the big pluses for street art and this site, IMHO. If you buy a print or an original and decide it isn't for you, you can usually find a ready market and sell for around what you've paid.
If you buy fine art from a gallery and decide to sell you are kind of stuffed unless the piece and the artist is expensive enough to auction at one of the commercial houses. Usually you will take a big hit if they are not.
Another reason I only buy at auction, or for demonstrable auction prices.
You may be paying more than anyone else on that occasion, but at least you know someone else was willing to pay almost as much.
