featuring: Lisa Alisa, Camilla d'Errico, Sarah Joncas, Simone Maynard, Mia & Mijn Schatje
October 24th - November 23rd, 2008
Opening Reception: Friday, October 24th,7-10pm
"In The Language of Angels" examines the softer side of Pop Surrealism through the collection of artworks by an international group of young female artists. Paintings and digital prints by Sarah Joncas (Canada), Camilla d'Errico (Canada), Mia (USA), Lisa Alisa (Russia), Mijn Schatje (France) and Simone Maynard (Australia) will be on display from October 24th through November 23rd at Brooklyn's own Ad Hoc Art. Each artist, while maintaining their individualism, find themselves to be part of a larger whole which has reached global proportions. Finding it's roots in late 70's Los Angeles (also reinforced and added to by the Japan of 1980's), Pop Surrealism has grabbed the attention of the world through artists such as Robert Williams, Mark Ryden, Sas Christian, Ron English, Lori Earley, Camille Rose Garcia, Joe Sorren and many more. Discover now a whole new generation of young talented Pop Surrealists who are globally based and quickly taking the world by storm.

MIJN SCHATJE
Marie Blanco Hendrickx aka Mijn Schatje is a 25 year old highly sought after illustrator and artist based in Paris. This half dutch and half Spanish girl is a double graduate from Fine Art and Graphic design schools in France. She's an active participant in the Parisian electro scene, where she's creating many LP and CD covers for reknowned « French Touch » labels like Record Makers (founded by the duo Air) and Ekler'O'Shock. She won international acclaim with her work for TimeRelease (US) and the Taiwanese Avant Garden. Mijn Schatje delivers artistic direction and illustrations for the likes of sportswear brand Reebok and the New York model agency Women Management. The whole of the '08 collection of the hip Italian fashion house Fornarina is currently subject to the unique Mijn Schatje style, bringing her enchanted characters to the highstreet fashion stores of Los Angeles, Korea, Hong Kong, London, Las Vegas, Milan...
In the meantime Mijn is regularly working as an artistic consultant for Playstation / Sony entertainment and recently started giving lectures and workshops at the Parsons American school of Design in Paris.
Her work is pure, poetic and sophisticated and has been described as "digital lowbrow" or "Pop Surrealism" if in need of a label. Her silenced, fantastic universe is a bizarre and beautiful landscape from which big eyed elf-like little creatures stare at you with their mesmerizing eyes. Her work is both romantic and surreal, the kind you would love to get lost in. It is a beguiling combination of innocence and sophistication, a subtle mix of darkness and seduction, which is largely appreciated and propagated by the world's cutting edge press and publishers like Taschen Illustration Now 2, Dazed & Confused, Computer Arts, WeAr, Territory, Die Gestalten Verlag, Pig Magazine to name a few.
Future projects include an artist monography to come up in 2009 along with a solo show at Corey Helford Gallery.
Mijn Schatje is currently being represented by Ad Hoc Art (NYC) Corey Helford Gallery (L.A.) KochXBos (Amsterdam) Arts Factory (Paris) Compound Gallery (Portland)

CAMILLA d'ERRICO
BIO
Camilla d'Errico is a product of her split heritage, Italian and Canadian rolled into one. Being Italian she's no stranger to strong drama; emotional outbursts were the norm. And growing up in Canada she adopted independence, high levels of politeness and the need for Saturday morning cartoons.
Camilla's first love is comics. She first got into comics in high school where she was constantly drawing dragons and sexy girls for fun. It was in 2000 that Camilla first attended the San Diego Comic Con International. The instant she walked through the doors she realized that a 9-5 day job would kill her, and it was soon made clear to her that art was the path she would follow.
After a few years in the comic industry Camilla realized she could expand her style into a variety of other industries; snowboards, magazine covers, toys, clothes. Camilla has also begun to carve out a niche for herself in the fine art field thanks to her fiery nature, high level of ambition and persistence in following her dream. Her work is characterized by an emotional complexity that spans the full array of human emotions and touches the soul.
She is part of what may be the first art movement in Western history where women are not second-class citizens, but may even have an edge in the mind of the public, especially when it comes to capturing the essence that is woman.
Her next few years are already filling up with high profile shows in galleries the world over, new comic projects, and collaborations with a variety companies and industries.
"Its about expressing what they feel and feeling what they express" -Camilla d’Errico

Lisa Alisa
Bio Lisa Alisa's Art is metaphoric self biography at its core. All the girls in the paintings carry close resemblance to the author. Her art has stirred up controversy on a number of occasions. Some criticize violence, and others are appalled by the young age of the models. To which Lisa replies:
"Life is a violent and beautiful thing, you die from it. My art is nothing but a portrayal of everyday life. Every person has to do things they don't like. There is very little actual freedom in our existence, due to social and economical restraints. Your soul, which is a young child forever, is exposed to suffering and anguish, whether you accept it or not. My art explores the depth of horror, dreams of nonchalance, and aims to bring a catharsis."

Simone Maynard
Simone Maynard on FOOD...
The works in Food and Desire, to me, tell more than just the story of my battle of wills. It does explore the battle between necessity and passion – one feeding the other and the frustration along the way – fighting to create. Where would I rather be? What would I rather be doing?
The painting waitress – the waitress who paints – the painter who waits…. Waits to create… waits to paint.
The work explores my everyday world… the means in which I need to meet to paint… as well as the NEED to paint. It also explores the mysteries or other persona of the waitress… such a personal yet non-attached job… an intimate yet generic job or role. Serving an audience. What does a waitress do when she is not waiting? Looking at the idea that she is more than just a waitress… the notion that she could be anyone or anything outside of her waiting job. Of course it is well know that many musicians, artists and actors have done this sort of job. Often it’s a way to make ends meet whilst waiting for a break or recognition or respect in their chosen field of the arts…. Waiting to be noticed? People have no idea of what else she, (the waitress), can do other than carry multiple plates and pour champagne with one hand behind their back and a smile on their face… In a sense they, themselves are actors, for the job is role-play.
There is also the personal and sensual element to food and taste… the quality, presentation and service can contribute to making someone’s night, or day, special… memorable…
Some remember you some forget…. the same goes the other way. Some want to know more about you, others pretend they already know and some couldn’t even remember which one of us took the drink order. Some are understanding some just demanding… some want all your attention some want hardly any… you learn a lot about people… but what do people learn about the waitress?
“She’s just a waitress” – oh no she is not – she is so much more….
I am an artist who waits.
Simone Maynard on SELF...
This current body of work is possibly the most personal and intimate that I have ever produced. So personal that I feel it will be somewhat of a risk to show it - or should I say exhibit it in a commercial gallery sense.
This body of work is also the most articulate work I have done for a long time and I have taken a bit of a break from the hand stitching and worked meticulously with my paintbrushes and fine line work.
All works in this series are self-portraits - a subject I have had numerous debates about regarding mine and others. I am an artist who will happily promote this subject, and when needed, defend it... and my reasons are not as egotistic as some may think. Having said that, I don't know an artist without an ego - then again, I don't know many people, artists or not, who do not possess at least something that resembles one. It's not a dirty word.
So why paint thy self?
The self-portrait is something most, if not all, artists explore at some point in their artistic career. It is a figure an artist can paint without worrying about offending the subject/model in any way. An artist can paint himself or herself however they like or however they see themselves, after all, we know ‘ourselves’ better than anyone else. There is a sense of more freedom and less worry of criticism when one paints a self-portrait – though there are ALWAYS critics – we ourselves are our own worst.
Another reason for this exhibition consisting of only self-portraits is the story I wanted to tell. The story of my battle of wills – the artist vs. the waitress as explained in my artist statement.
Simone Maynard on JAPAN...
Since returning from living in Japan in June of 2007, I have lived away from the city, therefore away from my family and circle of friends, away from the social and cultural activities that enticed and inspired me before I left. I have not really had much interaction with anyone other than my partner, and the people I work with – leaving less opportunity to meet potential models and inspiration figures. I often work long hours in hospitality so my life has consisted of waiting and painting and not much else in between so it seemed inevitable that I should produce this body of work on exhibition aptly titled – ‘Food and Desire’.
In her painting, Simone explores the theme of her major inspiration. Her current works are dominated once again by a Japanese theme, this time focusing on the figurative aspect. Some of the imagery carries on from previous exhibitions, however, most is being seen for the first time. These works see Simone continue her exploration of the medium, hand stitching, which adds a textural element to her work. Having traveled to Japan for a second time in 2005, these works are very much influenced by her experience there and the art of simplicity; the ability to creatively maximise the use of something minimalistic - the Japanese have mastered the art of this and Simone has applied this theory to recent and current work. Using a very simplified palette, Simone explores the relationship between colour and image and the mood created within that relationship, thereby focusing on minimal colour and maximum impact. These figurative works focus more on mood than formalities, they are not necessarily about recreating reality, they are interpretations, providing us with something that reality does not. "I see art as an expression of self, as well as a means of communicating with people. My ultimate aim every time I create a piece of art is to engage the viewer. This engagement will hopefully enable the viewer to be moved beyond first impressions and to thus enter a visual dialogue with the piece, ideally transforming their experience from the abstract to a more tactile and meaningful realm. I believe passionately that art can foster this process or transformation."

There is also the personal and sensual element to food and taste… the quality, presentation and service can contribute to making someone’s night, or day, special… memorable… Some remember you some forget…. the same goes the other way.
