Art - Weather the Recession?, by Daniel Silk on Oct 24, 2008 12:19:08 GMT 1, How do you think things are going to pan out over the next year or so with the World Recession?
I think many people are gonna be forced to sell large chunks of their art collections while others will be able to pick up the pieces at discount prices Could this be a good time to be a buyer? Will some of the Artists struggle over the next few years as the amount of money being spent on art dries up? Will the sort of art we are all into weather the storm, and will not be affected?
What do you think? What will you do?

Art - Weather the Recession?, by daz205 on Oct 24, 2008 13:00:42 GMT 1, anyone looking to sell in the next few years will loose out on previous prices, however if you plan to have the art on the walls to be enjoyed ( as it should be ) for the next 5+ years then i think prices will return ( assuming the artists output doesnt dry up during the bad times ) if you want to make money then wait until prices are back on the way up ( maybe a year or 2 ) and buy buy buy ( imo dont ever try and judge the lowest point to purchase as the market may still go down further try purchase on the way up and all should be good )

Art - Weather the Recession?, by dwight on Oct 24, 2008 19:59:03 GMT 1, On the topic..with specific reference to only banksy works, I'm guessing the banksy works are going to weather the financial storm fairly well. Sure there will be a slowdown in sales and prices will decrease somewhat, but no one will be giving away signed banksy prints for $1000 any time that I can forsee. What I see happening is the signed banksy prints and canvases moving out of the hands of people on this forum and into the hands of more permanent collections worldwide. I'm not an expert in the art market nor do I have any formal art education so don't be too hard on my opinion

Art - Weather the Recession?, by jamesreeve5 on Oct 24, 2008 22:16:59 GMT 1, I will have to agree with Dwight on this one. The most established artists like Banksy will stay fairly stable. I don't however think that we will be seeing as many unknowns flogging their latest print runs on this form. Speculative buying dries up first...
Paper Magazine ran an article talking about the present and future of street art here: www.papermag.com/?section=article&parid=2901
Basically the cream always rises to the top, and the people who bought bad art say "I never intended to sell it anyways".
