Peter Howson at Flowers East til' 22 November 2008, by daley on Oct 25, 2008 11:48:25 GMT 1, One of my favourite contemporary artists has finally got a new show on at Flower East on Kingsland Road.
www.flowerseast.com/Originals_Exhibitions.asp?Exhibition=08HOWSON&OE=1
I've been a fan since 1990 but I haven't been to the show yet. I'm very excited! Since being the war artist in Bosnia, getting divorced and loosing it etc his work is a little more religious.
Oh, and before you make the comparisons - I doubt he's heard of Neate, Denning, Micallef... or myself for that matter. ;D

Peter Howson at Flowers East til' 22 November 2008, by loucastel on Oct 25, 2008 13:06:16 GMT 1, Superb art, perhaps a little deep for me, seems like he is expressing himself from within his soul. What sort of thing did he paint before his problems?

Did you hear him on the radio the other day (R4/pm) ? the guy is without doubt an entity who knows exactly what he wants from his work.
I first saw his stuff (pencil sketches) way back in the mid 80's at a market in glasgow... yeah a flea market. (Paddy's if you're a weegie)
This guys work is pure catharthis.
...religion and the west coast of Scotland do not mix imho - i'd hasten to add.
..

Peter Howson at Flowers East til' 22 November 2008, by weaver on Oct 25, 2008 15:15:39 GMT 1, Saw a show of his work in aberdeen about a year ago, some breathtaking work, and very very dark. I'm from the west coast and his work struck a strong chord with me for the reasons that dotdot mentioned. Just wish I had bothered to spend a bit and buy one of his pieces as they were very reasonable at the time, I hear they are about 3-5x as much now.... bum. Not such a big fan of the pencil / pen&ink work, but his big canvases are stunningly scary.

Hi dotdot, no, I didn't hear the radio piece - will have to try and track it down. Flea market eh? Blimey. I finally went up to Gallowgate last year and was surprised at how many real-life Howson characters were around! I bought a pastel piece while I was there at his charity gallery. Yes I hear his religious stuff has been a bit of a kiss of death to his career.

Hi Weaver. Yes, I've zoomed by Flowers East and just seen a very quick glimpse of the huge canvases - they look around the 12-15ft scale and look amazing. I'm putting an hour aside to see them properly. I think his work will hold it's value without a doubt - so yes, you should of bought!

Hi Dale, I have seen his work in the flesh several times over the last 20 years and have always been awestruck by its dark energy and grusome / everyday subject matter. He's not street, but by christ the guy can paint. There were some private pieces from the locals in the show last year, the crowning of the fool and the crucifction piece ( a grim version of goya's one) knocked me for 6. I dont own a place big enough to do anything but his smallest pieces justice, there was a trypich of very close up dark faces along the lines of see / hear / speak no evil that was beautiful work, and individually the cheapest in the show, but to get all 3 would have broken the bank at the time. One day though, one day....

Thanks Dale. May try and pick up a bigger piece by him when I have the folding. His work is quite masculine though so it is hard to swing it past the other half.
