Andy Warhol ๐บ๐ธ Real or Fake? โข Sunday B. Morning Print, by stringerbell on May 2, 2010 9:41:26 GMT 1, fwiw, Warhol's don't trade with COA's. You turn them over and look for a signature or the circular watermark from the estate/foundation or the penciled initials of Fred hughes or vincent freemont or any combination of them all. He kept meticulous records as has the Foundation and by and large there are precious few Warhol fakes which is quite telling given the enormous output of the artist. One has to be MUCH more careful buying lithos of modern art which has had a lot more forgeries by %. The highest profile fake Warhol's were the infamous Italian Marilyn prints which are easy to spot a mile away as the dimensions don't match up. Dodo, if in your shoes (and I am to a degree) and you haven't made a deal for this yet, I'd be patient. I think Warhol prices are going to jump significantly over the next 2 weeks with the May auctions and I think we all may be shocked by how much. I wouldn't say this too often but that soup can could be worth double what it is today in ~ 14 days.
Lee3 is correct. Something is going on in the Warhol field. I wish I could afford more works!

You two care to elaborate? Can't think what can make stuff double in value in such a short space of time, short of half all known prints getting destroyed or something???

>>>You two care to elaborate?<<<
Mine is a hunch and nothing more. Go on over to the Christie's site and peruse the Chrichton estate consignment. It's a collection of work that rarely comes to market and *I* believe that it is going to lift the price of art across the board. There are no major Warhol's in that estate (it has ridiculous examples of Johns, Ruscha (Voltage is a GEM), Rauschenberg, Picasso, Thiebaud and others).
Given what is going on in Europe right now with the euro, I suspect there are plenty of wealthy Europeans who feel uncomfortable with their savings denominated in that currency who are going to push the price of collectibles (items our governments can not print at will) significantly higher. The Johns flag alone will do this imo and there is an enormous fright Wig at Sotheby's that will do very well too. So, my hunch is not just Warhol but blue chip art across the board could be in for prices that leave us stunned. I could just as easily be wrong too and the whole thing passes over with little interest. Still, given the unrest economically across the globe and looking at results a couple weeks ago for rare gems (another collectible category), I believe there is sound reason in high expectations. From others I speak with, Russian buyers have returned and Asian desire is growing at a ridiculous pace. Bejing just slammed the door shut on speculation with local real estate (one apartment per buyer) so there again we could easily see demand funneled towards art. I've been expecting big things for months and have made no secret of my position and on another board said months ago to do you art buying now. Longwinded point being, I believe speculation/desire on the part of the wealthy of the world and true inflation will signal itself in the markets that governments do not manipulate and we'll get a good look this week with modern art results.
We already got a good look 2 months ago as the most desired of the Warhol prints (grey Marilyn) went for $350k which is about 100 higher then they have ever sold for in the past. Hold onto your hats, it's going to be a fun couple of weeks for auctions.

Andy Warhol ๐บ๐ธ Real or Fake? โข Sunday B. Morning Print, by shinybrite on May 2, 2010 21:09:45 GMT 1, Hi There
Non Reflective - Yuk!!
Sorry, but that's really old hat. To be very correct Non Reflective is old style heavily acid etched on both sides, the newer matt version is called Reflection Control, and it also can come with a conservation filter.
If reflections really bother you, either have AR - Anti Reflective, or preferably Museum Glass, as this has both UV Protection, Almost no colour (most glass is green), and it's party piece (like AR) is it has almost no reflection, but this is achieved by changing the glass to lower it's reflectivity but retaining it's clarity, rather than matting the glass like reflection control, which is less desirable, especially if a thick mount is used, as this lifts the glass far enough away from the image so that the image becomes blurred!!
Complicated huh ;-)
Best wishes - Jack
ps. Wearology, i definately would have got non reflective glass on those prints!!

I did; clearly I was wrong. I thought the flag would go for double what it did and lift the price of art across the board. Clearly the best of the best is increasing at outrageous pace. The rest is languishing with notable exceptions. Yes, while a massive fight wig (my old avatar, those were the days) doubled it's estimate range, I couldn't have been more wrong when it comes to the rest of Warhol as it was largely flat and unimpressive. Silver Liz is the best of category. However, there were a number of 40 inch portraits and Sotheyby's that failed to attract a buyer at $200k which is a very low price for a canvas of that size. Even the ads paintings were bringing in half of what they were 4 or 5 months ago. It will be interesting to see what the July auctions bring as they'll be priced in pounds sterling which has the advantage of being weaker to more currencies than the dollar for the NY auctions.
The equity markets are not doing art any favors either and if France and/or Germany opposes the idea of lending their balance sheet to the marginal Euro members (economically) then, well I don't want to think about then.

Andy Warhol ๐บ๐ธ Real or Fake? โข Sunday B. Morning Print, by erikjorgenen303 on Jul 9, 2010 14:23:27 GMT 1, Interesting discussion guys. I was trying to find for you an article about his catalogue, and his estate, who are going round de-certificating loads of prints which were apparently "not carried out by Warhol". Apparently they have been calling people's new purchases in for "cataloguing purposes" and then stamping them with a big red stamp on the back saying something like "withdrawn". Seems to have been a nightmare for those buying for investment (I suppose a large proportion of Warhol collectors). Anybody else come across this article and remember where it was? A
This happens quite often. i was on the lookout for a warhol for a client and was offered quite a few that were obviously from his original screens but where never signed, either not gotten around to or they were pulled after hours by an assistant or apprentice. they are sold as is at a discounted value and are never taken in to the foundation because if they do not get approval they are stamped accordingly and thus become worthless. My client decided to purchase the set and out of the 5 took one into to be authenticated by the foundation. still waiting to get a date from the board.

Andy Warhol ๐บ๐ธ Real or Fake? โข Sunday B. Morning Print, by mmmike on Jul 23, 2010 18:32:23 GMT 1, Iโm considering buying a Warhol Birmingham Race Riot print. As Warholโs go this is one of the cheaper prints, since it is unsigned and not numbered. It is limited to 500 +APs. My question is how should I get comfort that a specific print is real? I would think for someone who wants to make knock offs of something this would be a perfect candidate. It is a black and white screen print with no signature and no number, what could be easier? Plus since the price relative to other Warholโs is low probably most people buying would not pay that much attention to authenticity? For me it is still a lot of money. I will have to save for a bit so if Iโm going to pay $3,000 - $4,000 I need to be confident in the authenticity. Anyone have any advice? I would appreciate any help. Thanks

Andy Warhol ๐บ๐ธ Real or Fake? โข Sunday B. Morning Print, by Michael Jacob on Jul 23, 2010 18:48:13 GMT 1, it will be tough to get authenticity as they only do it a few times a year. Im not even sure they would do that print. You might get some detailed photos and contact a reputable gallery to review them. Often times they are more than happy to help. Having fakes out there hurts them. Price seems very good.

My advice which is the same with any Warhol print is to purchase it at auction so you have rock solid provenance that anyone will truse. 99 times out of 100 you'll pay far less sourcing there anyway as opposed to a dealer. Finally, there are precious few documented Warhol fakes in print or canvas which is fairly remarkable given the volume of output. The majority of the documented fakes have been at the top of the chain (Marilyn prints, Elvis and self portrait paintings, etc). Good luck

Andy Warhol ๐บ๐ธ Real or Fake? โข Sunday B. Morning Print, by mmmike on Jul 23, 2010 19:20:33 GMT 1, Thanks for the advice. That is about what i thought. No guarantees in these things. I'm curious what would happen if I submitted one of these to the foundation? Think they would even look at it or would it be beneath them? If I do buy one I would try.
Has anyone seen an AP? Are they different or have some notation on them?

Andy Warhol ๐บ๐ธ Real or Fake? โข Sunday B. Morning Print, by mmmike on Jul 23, 2010 20:43:33 GMT 1, Bonhams has open seeing day on Wednesdays in America and they could possibly put you in contact with a Warhol expert - I am not sure about overseas but please please please do not buy Warhols on the secondary market unless from a reputable gallery (COVEAT EMPTOR).
can you tell me more about why you would not buy except from a reputable gallery?
Do you know of any fake prints?
How about if it comes with a receipt from a gallery or mid level auction house? Good enough? Only buying from a gallery posses a couple issue (supply and price, both buying and if I ever want to sell). Plus we are talking about a lower priced not so in demand print so likely not a priority of the galleries.
thanks

Andy Warhol ๐บ๐ธ Real or Fake? โข Sunday B. Morning Print, by Brushstrokes 75 on Jul 24, 2010 0:54:06 GMT 1, Stop listening to every crap people say.
1) check if the size is similar to the one in the catalogue raisonnรฉ. I have it so as far as i can tell (I'm familair by the way with this print) :
Birmingham race riot
Screenprint on paper 20 x 24 inches (50,8 x 61 cm) Edition : 500 + 10 AP
Published in portfolio Ten Works by Ten painters (unsigned portfolio but numbered on the colophone)
Ask the guy for the exact size of the print he is selling and maybe he has/had the complete portfolio. If the size is right it's start to be really hard for it to be a fake... Use paypal (only through ebay) or escrow system like escrow.com. [Ask him for example to list it on ebay for a buy it now of $1 and he can update through the shipping fee the real amount (paypal in any case will reimburse the price + the shipping fee). Then you have 40 days or whatever you asked through escrow I guess its 60 days tops to have it checked from any auction house (pretend you're ready to sell it and ask for an estimation, it's free!).
When I hear never buy a warhol from the secondary market, it looks like I hear galleries speaking. It's like people would say don't buy banksy's prints only from laz! Galleries have been selling fakes as museum have exposed fakes as well (though they didn't now they were... at least I hope so!). Buying from a gallery would just make you think that you bought something legit but it's not stating it in any case.
The foundation could at least state it but there's only a check up 3 times a year. I know for a fact that they reject peace which are true originals to control the market. They only check in any case the print in itself but don't care about the signature (most of warhol legit prints were not signed by warhol... shocker!)
Finally, if you're intending to buy it from ebay from a seller named multiple-business, be sure that there's a big possibility that it's a fake.
If you need any more advice, you can PM me or post it here I'll answer it.

Andy Warhol ๐บ๐ธ Real or Fake? โข Sunday B. Morning Print, by snausages on Jul 24, 2010 5:06:03 GMT 1, please please please do not buy Warhols on the secondary market unless from a reputable gallery (COVEAT EMPTOR). I bought a warhol on the secondary market, it cost me $4500 less than it would have cost me from a gallery (so about 1/2 price) โย and it's absolutely 100% real. Obviously be careful if you go that route. But there are no hard and fast rules in life about anything.
