Andy Warhol πΊπΈ Real or Fake? β’ Sunday B. Morning Print, by lee3 on Oct 11, 2012 16:15:16 GMT 1, >>>at 2-3k you're going to struggle. You might, might be able to get a Ladies and Gentlemen plate if you're lucky.<<<
You would be surprised. Here are a few (there were lots more) form the past 3 months
Andy Warhol TitleFrom 25 Cats Name(d) Sam and One Blue Pussy Mediumoffset lithograph w/handcoloring Year of Work1954 SizeHeight 8.9 in.; Width 5.9 in. / Height 22.5 cm.; Width 15 cm. Imo, this is arguably his best print run though the market thinks otherwise (fwiw, i've never seen any of these in a gallery under $7k and more often than not they are $15-50k) :

You can't get much more iconic than this:
Andy Warhol Title Flowers (signed) Medium prints and multiples, offset lithograph Year of Work 1964 Printing/Casting 1964 Size Height 21.9 in.; Width 21.9 in. / Height 55.6 cm.; Width 55.6 cm. Cat. Andy Warhol Title Committee 2000 Medium screenprint Year of Work 1982 Size Height 30.3 in.; Width 20 in. / Height 77 cm.; Width 50.7 cm. Edition 1619/2000 Cat. Rais. My artnet search of warhol signed prints up to $5k returned over 2500 entries (all auction) and the first 100 take us back just to November of last year. Most galleries (not all) will suggest these are far more rare and valuable than thier auction prices. And if you have some retail space, who can blame someone from buying at auction and inflating by 5 or 6 fold and willing to cut price by 50% from any would be buyer? No disrespect meant to anyone, but, with rare exception, edition Warhol is far better sourced at auction on your wallet.
edit: For those curious (i'm not giong to copy them all) but a quick scan of the past 100 prints under $5k at auction include many of the above plus brillo, lots of 50s hand colored lithos, 7 or 8 different electric chairs (that would be my target in your shoes), many ladies and gentlemen, many cows, couple space fruit, couple st. apollonia, flash and one nice s&h green stamps which went at the low end of its range for under $2500. good luck

Andy Warhol πΊπΈ Real or Fake? β’ Sunday B. Morning Print, by Pattycakes on Oct 12, 2012 0:55:39 GMT 1, Lee you know your stuff, but also you know it's all about condition. The Chair at BA was an absolute ruin hence the Β£. Kitty's yes they are fine but few people see 50's Warhol and think Warhol. The guy on here obviously want's something that looks like a Warhol, of rhis budget he'll struggle to find anything that's really worth the dosh. However, if he looks to other artist's he will find something worthwhile and interesting for the money.

Fair point and I'm definitely not looking at condition on all of these BUT there were 8 different electric chairs in that first 100 search of warhol sub $5k. To me that is one of his finest images but it can be a very tough sell for obvious reasons. The orange brush one notwithstanding which commands multiples of the rest of the edition of 10. I believe there were 5 different colors between the 8 chairs auctioned over the past year below $5k.
Condition plays as big a role as image but electric chairs (apart from orange brush or whatever it's properly called) have traded at or below $5k at auction for as long as Ive been watching. As far as I'm concerned, you pay big money for marilyn, mao, tomato soup, jagger or self portraits but just about everything else is fair game at prices that look cheap by comparison simply because of volume. I think there is a very common misconception that because of the numbers his paintings command that his prints are out of reach and that is just not true for 95%+ of the signed prints he released.

Then you'll spend $20k-250k to get that look which is fine. Personally, I'd prefer to allocate that money towards hand drawn commercial shoes or portraits from the 50s but that's just my preference. As far as prints, I think you would have just as iconic of a Warhol on the wall spending $3-8k and choosing any of the flowers, Jackie, 9 of the 10 electric charis or every other soup but Tomato.
If i were spending/investing money (and I'm not) I'd target the unique prints on HMP paper like electric chairs ~$15k, Mao ~$30k or Marilyn Reversal ~$100k. Those are the exact same screens used on their canvas counterparts. The market clearly doesn't value them as I think it should but I don't make the rules. Still, unique mao for one half/one third of the edition 2000 mao minus a warhol signature but you still get V. Freemont on the reverse if that floats your boat. I do expect to see a lot of those unique HMP prints in the multi year Christie's partnership exhausting the remaining Foundation work. Anyway, I've said my peace, good luck.

i saw one on the secondary market asking $30k about a month ago with both Warhol and Mick's signatures on the front. Figure $25k for that one. I'm looking at artnet and the past 20 sold at auction go back to April of this year with with a high of $55k and a low of $22k with 3 buy ins. Average looks to be the mid 20s US. There is one for sale at Christie's (signed by both Mick and Andy) on the 31st of this month with a $20-30k range. Anyway, if that was the image one wanted, I'd say you did just fine if you got it at $25k.
