Andy Warhol πΊπΈ Real or Fake? β’ Sunday B. Morning Print, by Deleted on Aug 16, 2014 19:06:26 GMT 1, That's really really interesting re: Warhol being the 'creator' of selling test proofs, artist proofs, etc.
Many say that Banksy is the father of distinguishing between the signed and unsigned limited edition print, as usually the difference between a signed and unsigned version of a limited edition print was not considered as significant and commanded nearly the same price. Either that, or artists would only release signed prints or unsigned prints.

I don't know about him as the creator, but the dealer interviewed recognizes him as the first to realize the monetary value as selling a test print as a unique and raising the price.

Excuse the line across the top crap photo rather than a crap print!! That is fantastic, a signed Warhol. I've never had a Warhol and wouldn't know how to buy one. I've bought a few Banksy prints over the years and of course would only buy with Pest Control COA. How does one know they are getting an original Warhol print? Is there a Warhol equivalent of Pest Control I should know about?

I know the prices differ greatly, but what price do they start at? Nothing is fool proof but look for a good reliable source or a good auction house. The famous pieces are exspensive but the lesser pieces are much more affordable so worth watching to see how many bidders etc and how many pieces in an auction so that you can get one at a reasonable rate. Eg the Flowers print I have is signed but was not pricey at all about Β£700 as I remember.

Andy Warhol πΊπΈ Real or Fake? β’ Sunday B. Morning Print, by Rolex on Aug 17, 2014 14:11:21 GMT 1, I was offered a 1966 cow screen print last month from a auction house, signed in pencil, Β£5.3k. really liked it, but it had minor handling creases to borders and had trim lines removed from right and left hand sides. I would have had this framed, so in effect hidden the issues but wasn't sure if I was doing the right thing or not so decided against the purchase. Interested to hear people's thoughts on the above issues and how it effects prices etc.

Andy Warhol πΊπΈ Real or Fake? β’ Sunday B. Morning Print, by lee3 on Aug 17, 2014 17:16:09 GMT 1, To the original poster, there are over 100k signed warhol prints when counting up all the AP's, TP's and uniques, the vast majority of which were signed. The average warhol print costs less than 10k because of the sheer volume of output. Paintings are estimated to number somewhere from 8-15k depending on who you ask but we only have the catalog raisonne thru '74. About half of those paintings are signed and half are not (about half the output was sold during his lifetime and half were not). The premium for signed paintings over unsigned disappeared from the market in the mid 90s when the market seemingly accepted the validity of the Foundation and the distribution methods it used for the remaining work (ie. they placed it well).
Imo, the best source for a buyer of Warhol prints is auction as retail is generally a multiple of the auction price. To this day, buyers still get a lot of value for their cash by targeting the hand drawn and colored commercial work from the 50s which typically cost 10-20k for a decent example but there are many cheaper and far more expensive too.
Most of his prints are quite something in person but the sheer volume of output weighs on prices for anything but the handful that the market has deemed are truly iconic. For my tastes you still get a lot of value chasing 9 of the 10 electric chairs, most of the soup cans, and a lot of the unique one-offs (without signatures) that he did in the late 70s on HMP paper (mao, electric chair, self portraits and marilyn).
It gets really tough to compare the Banksy market to the Warhol market due to the huge volume discrepancies between the two artists. They're both the rare artist known the world over during their lifetime and probably two of the higher demand print artists available today. But to wonder why a radar rat for example costs 10X what a signed committee 2k warhol print commands is never going to make sense for any reason other than volume imo. Most of the signed Warhol editions number in the 2k+ range whereas most of the signed Banksy editions (and there are far fewer editions for Banksy) number less than a couple hundred.

Andy Warhol πΊπΈ Real or Fake? β’ Sunday B. Morning Print, by Jeezuz Jones Snr on Aug 17, 2014 22:23:04 GMT 1, Thanks for the post LeeI didn't realise there are 100k prints!! It was all that speed him and his workers did that's how they churned out so much work. Looking at banksy his total prints and canvases can't be more than (I will have a guess here) 15k pieces?

Andy Warhol πΊπΈ Real or Fake? β’ Sunday B. Morning Print, by Deleted on Aug 18, 2014 18:29:32 GMT 1, Except you can easily argue that Banksy's relation to the Urban Art movement is extremely analogous to Warhol's relation to the Pop Art movement; that seems to be the underlying connection more or less. Look at it from an art history perspective.
