Does anyone see the irony in this?, by pfffffffffft on Aug 3, 2008 4:02:34 GMT 1, Or is it just sour grapes because he missed the boat?
From an article in Time magazine...will paraphrase the whole article for you up to the pertinent quote:
www.time.com/time/arts/article/0,8599,1825271,00.html?xid=rss-arts
blah blah blah Banksy unmasked? blah blah blah robin gunningham blah blah blah brad pitt and angelina jolie blah blah blah
"But Jeffrey Deitch, an art dealer with close ties to legendary graffiti artists Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat, asks, "When you can buy a superb Picasso drawing for $500,000 and a work dashed off by Banksy for the same price, does that make sense to you?"
Ok let me wrap my head around this. The guy is currently hosting the Os Gem show. He is the official representative of the Keith Haring estate yet essentially he suggests that Banksy's work is worth a pittance of a Picasso drawing yet he thought Keith Haring was some great genius?
My guess is Jeffery Deitch was a bit late to the party and it's just sour grapes. Shame he's hosting the Os Gem show.

Doesn't make sense but that is normal in the world we live in. Investors are gambling on Banksy, Picasso is already dead so he won't be producing anything new?!?!?, Banksy has more short term profiability, so... if Jeffrey was may advisor he would now be sacked.

sure he wouldn't agree with this jeffrey deitch's flippant comments - what a deitchbag!

I think my point is that Keith Haring's work also looks quite "dashed off" compared to a picasso. And I would also suggest that banksy's work and style is also iconic and more recognizable than most urban artists our there.
I think if you were to hold up a haring, a banksy, & a picasso you would find more similarities between Haring & Banksy than Haring and Picasso. Which is why I am outraged when a guy who was close to two iconic artist thats did a lot of their own work on the street turns around and is dismissive of another new icon in street art. I'm sure many in the art world in the early 80s were as dismissive of Haring and Basquiat as he is of Banksy now.
A Deitch-bag indeed.

Does anyone see the irony in this?, by slowmo on Aug 3, 2008 15:45:11 GMT 1, I'm not sure he was being dismissive, I think he just feels prices are overheated on Banksy, and from the recent cooling at the low end (print sales), he may well be right.

I laughed when I saw that quote last week. A KEY difference being that a "superb" $500k Picasso drawing is going to be measured in centimeters and be roughly the size of a piece of paper. Whereas the $500k Banksy is going to be iconic, on a better medium for longevity (paint on steel or canvas), and enormous (ie. measured in meters). It's a very silly comment.

I agree, I just find it ironic that he is out there peddling Haring's wares which compared to a picasso are rather simplistic and arguably cost much more than a picasso drawing yet he's dismissive of another new artist starting out in the same manner. Seems Dietch may be stuck in the 80s.

Personally, I think prices are overheated on both artists at all ends of their work just like countless other auctionable artists today. But, I've felt that way for the better part of 3 years now so it shows you what I know.
