Sending a piece through the post, framed?, by edcase on Jul 30, 2008 1:59:42 GMT 1, Oh, I forgot one other element. Sending transatlantic.
I assume this is a ridiculously stupid idea, give the fragility of frame glass and the delight couriers take in throwing stuff around?
Anyone ever successfully shipped a large, framed print, either national or international?
cheers Ed

Sending a piece through the post, framed?, by manty on Jul 30, 2008 6:56:51 GMT 1, I have
I first wrapped it in bubble wrap
Then put 6mm ply over the back and the front overlapping by around an inch all around, then taped it, then bubble wrapped it again, then covered in cardboard.
Arrived all ok, probably took an hour to unwrap, sorry Spenie :-)

Sending a piece through the post, framed?, by snakes on Jul 30, 2008 7:17:54 GMT 1, Also - replace the glass for transit with acrylic.
Much safer in transit for the print.

Sending a piece through the post, framed?, by Harveyn on Jul 30, 2008 7:28:10 GMT 1, Only ever shipped once with glass. Despite an excessive amount of bubble wrap, wood, foam and cardboard it smashed and damaged the print. The guy who received it said he had never seen anything as well packed and he owns a gallery.
Remove the glass and refund the buyer the appropriate amount to replace it.

Sending a piece through the post, framed?, by Heavyconsumer on Jul 30, 2008 8:04:33 GMT 1, I did it recently to Brazil with a framed original on paper. Was wrapped in LOADS of bubble wrap, foam, more bubble wrap etc etc etc and very tightly packed. I also spent quite a bit on independent transit insurance (or rather I arranged that the gallery organised it). However, I was on edge for the week it took to arrive! I think Snakes' idea must be the smartest method I've heard yet, if it is an option. Acrylic must be a lot more flexible and less likley to break. Good luck!

Sending a piece through the post, framed?, by edcase on Jul 30, 2008 10:01:22 GMT 1, thanks guys. great suggestions.
since this is a transatlantic shipping, and it's a big piece, I'm wondering if it's worth the extra cost...I am still waiting for the final quote with the frame but the real expense is more the glass, and with the cost of shipping the whole frame versus the print, it might make more sense anyway to get it reframed here in the UK.
Will let you know either way!
thanks again eD
