Has 2008 been a slow year for Street Art?, by ROLLINS on Aug 1, 2008 6:47:13 GMT 1, Has 2008 been a slow year for Street Art?
I think so.
I'm ashamed to say - I'm not in love with the scene this year as I have been in years previous. (I'm no fly by night either before you say so - I've been into graf since 1984!! and bought my first Banksy in 2003!!)
Is it just me or anyone feel the same?

Has 2008 been a slow year for Street Art?, by Baxter Orr on Aug 1, 2008 7:05:44 GMT 1, I think its this whole art scene in general, I dont see a ton of "street art" day to day in Austin, and it seems like any print releases ive been really pumped about this year have been agonizing either to attempt to get or really frustrating not winning a lottery. Many of the "street artists" and "fine artists" I have grown to love over the past couple years are completely out of my price range now which seems to bring a disconnect with being a fan of the artist, maybe it is just me but when you have a framed piece even a print on your wall you connect with the artist so much more than staring at a jpeg on your computer wall paper. I think for me it feels like all of these things have made me withdrawl a little from street art and collecting in general.

Has 2008 been a slow year for Street Art?, by m@san on Aug 1, 2008 7:34:16 GMT 1, I've seen more art on the streets of Brighton than ever before. 2008 has been a great year for street art where I live.

You either have to have that artist as a friend so you can afford the work or move on unfortunate but true imo. Its been a great year for me and my first one. Met some great peolpe got some great art micallef walker spqr dale grimshaw lovin it

Has 2008 been a slow year for Street Art?, by robinbanks on Aug 1, 2008 9:35:02 GMT 1, I'm not exactly sure what a 'slow' year is. Is that good or bad?
Whichever, I think 2008 has to go down as the year that the world really started to sit up and take note of Street Art. As people have already mentioned both Cans and the Tate have been a huge success. On top of that Banksy produced one of largest and most daring pieces yet, Nick Walker is starting to get the recognition he undoubtedly deserves and Adam Neate looks to be taking the scene to a whole new level with some quite simply breath taking work in Brazil.
Oh, but the value of prints have dropped, if that's what you meant?

Has 2008 been a slow year for Street Art?, by Guest on Aug 1, 2008 9:53:38 GMT 1, How can anyone say its been a slow year for street art, as other posts have said Cans, Tate modern and some amazing shows and the year isn't over yet. Also a lot of new and upcoming artists on the streets, with hopefully successful careers ahead of them. I think this year has to go down as one of the best.

I think R was in fact making the opposite point....that it's all about money...dodgy goings on...a million one poor print releases...etc etc....
as street art gets taken to a whole new level of recognition maybe some of the reasons we fell in love with it in the first place are lost? (a question more than a statement)

Has 2008 been a slow year for Street Art?, by mcnuts on Aug 1, 2008 9:59:41 GMT 1, Nail on head Carlo. It's been a slow year for flipping street art and making money. It's been a busy year for crap art though.

Has 2008 been a slow year for Street Art?, by Guest on Aug 1, 2008 10:02:46 GMT 1, I find it quiet easy to steer clear of the crap being pumped out of some online galleries. with less than mediocre artists, jumping on the bandwagon, not even producing street pieces but being branded as such. which is the only downside to this year so far.

Has 2008 been a slow year for Street Art?, by dmandpenfold on Aug 1, 2008 10:04:50 GMT 1, yep plenty of crap art from the crap online galleries machine, with a few exceptions. However there has been some very nice work too and resurgence of a couple of old favourites

Has 2008 been a slow year for Street Art?, by carlito on Aug 1, 2008 10:21:23 GMT 1, personal +'s and -'s
plus side.... cans, b's street piece's (both at cans and elsewhere), AN's street work
negative side....mimicry without invention, bandwagon jumping, ideals tarnished
brief but some of the thoughts going through my head

Has 2008 been a slow year for Street Art?, by baileymontana on Aug 1, 2008 11:51:04 GMT 1, Cans Festival has been a real highlight for me and because they had nothing for sale, only people into the actual art could enjoy it.
I do think that a few more people need to put their art on the street a lot more and not just in East London (which seems the safest place in the UK to do graffiti / paste ups at the moment).
This year many newer artists seem to be copying Banksy's pricing plan when it comes to prints but not actually Banksy's commitment to travel around the UK to get art up on the street for people to enjoy for free.

Has 2008 been a slow year for Street Art?, by ROLLINS on Aug 1, 2008 17:48:57 GMT 1, The cost of prints? - I couldn't care less about. Mine stay firmly on my walls. They could be 50p or ยฃ50k for all I care.
I agree - Cans was an awesome site and the JR's around town were cool.
I feel that there's alot of mediocre stuff being pumped out at the mo and I agree I'd like to see some stuff on the streets again to to blow me away!!
Maybe I got spoilt last year. There were some great show's in town (Seen and Obey at Stolen Space, Mode2 at Maharishi and Invader at Laz to name a few!!) and my girlfriend had fun spotting all the Invaders plastered all of the place.
Maybe some of the "heavy hitters" need to hit some spots agian?

Nor can I - 'whippersnappers' would have been far more suitable.

Has 2008 been a slow year for Street Art?, by Stella Dore on Aug 2, 2008 0:24:27 GMT 1, its been a great year for street art as in art on the street...... cans lead to some great (and not so great) stencils being produced and tolerancy from the man in the street seems to have improved, jesus we've been painting in broad daylight these days and no one says a word! its an awesome state of affairs
