Insuring art in the post..., by TAOI on Jun 10, 2008 18:23:01 GMT 1, Many people have asked me about insuring art when posting it. I thought I'd just make a quick mention of insurance with the focus on 'in transit' risk.
Arranging an insurance policy solely to cover an item travelling from Person A to Person B isn't very easy. Most postal services use a method known as re-insurance to basically make a fund available to cover themselves for their own mistakes.
This is where having the right policy in place prior to making purchases really can help. If for instance one of our clients bought some art from a gallery it would be covered on their policy (within limitations on the policy docs) from the purchase point, and therefore if damaged in transit it would be covered.
Feel free to pm me with any further questions.

Insuring art in the post..., by curiousgeorge on Jun 10, 2008 18:25:51 GMT 1, I've used a courier based in Cornwall to collect and send high end computers, I had the same concerns many people sending Art would, he was covered upto 10k for loss/damage.Would imagine this is common across the self employed courier market, currently searching for one i can use on a regular basis at a reasonable cost

Insuring art in the post..., by TAOI on Jun 10, 2008 19:02:48 GMT 1, I would imagine a courier would be covered by his professional indemnity, much like a framer would be covered if they messed up a piece of art. It's a minefield so it's definately worth not assuming you're insured for things without checking first
