What is it Coming to? Where do we go?, by jamesreeve5 on May 30, 2008 7:30:03 GMT 1, What a dynamic change this scene has gone through in only the last year. It seems more and more people are becoming fed up with the system that street art has established for itself. Everywhere you turn it is who can make a buck. Prints sell out and are on ebay in seconds. Buyers used to complain about not getting into Laz openings, now they are standing out in the rain at Opus openings. Christina Aguilara is skipping waiting lists to get commissions by Dface. Banksy is being cheered for failing to meet the reserve price at auction. This board is littered with sales pitches from "urban" artists and 3 month old galleries advertising their sales.
Where do we go from here? This isn't what street art set out to be. Do you keep feeding the system that has now managed to exclude and alienate so many of its original supporters? Do people simply buy what they like, even if it means they are no longer treated with respect?

Back to the streets?

What is it Coming to? Where do we go?, by Daniel Silk on May 30, 2008 12:51:02 GMT 1, I think its just a matter of accepting that the scene is not here to be whatever you might wish it to be. Its all grows organically and it might be wrong to pin your own personal ideals on to a scene when you have no control over its direction.

Hmm, organically? I dunno about that Silky, recently it's all felt a bit genetically modified.

What is it Coming to? Where do we go?, by thebleedingedge on May 30, 2008 13:51:52 GMT 1, I think you guys can have the "urban artmovement", the next thing is probably already baking in the oven somewhere, probably by people shat on with this "movement", it's just the way it goes, the day somebody shoots their first goal in the premier league is the day someone else's knees lock up, hopefully when that next thing comes along, whatever it may be, you are all like the people telling the wright brothers they couldnt fly. I just hope the next thing is bigger than art, bigger than bulls**t and that does of course mean bigger than money.

I have to agree here. Urban Art is not the next big thing anymore, it IS the big thing right now. How long that will last I'm not sure... it's become too much about business and it's just not as exciting as it used to be.

What is it Coming to? Where do we go?, by nacional on May 30, 2008 20:21:25 GMT 1, I love the fact that artists are selling their wares on here: it cuts out the price hikes from the galleries, means we can get stuff sometimes to order and also see the art process as it unfolds.
Plus, you get to know a bit the artist behind the art, which can only be a good thing.
Oh, and their much more honest and reliable than some bastard galleries.

What is it Coming to? Where do we go?, by instinct on May 30, 2008 21:22:21 GMT 1, whats happening is... this thing is cooked, when you read the art history books a "movement" usually has about six or seven years in it before a group of pure new thinking individuals stand up and say "f**k you i have a better idea". the free thinking street artists are ready! it going to happen now! and guess what the free thinkers dont give a flyer about what us or the establishment think because their ideas are as pure as the driven snow... they have it to give and we must be ready to receive!

What is it Coming to? Where do we go?, by buffin on May 30, 2008 21:24:46 GMT 1, Its not all doom and gloom. Don't forget the guy at the head of this scene has just arranged a huge free festival, given loads to charity and raised awareness about political issues through SG07.
