Very First Stencil Attempt, by waXology on May 26, 2008 0:11:19 GMT 1, Ok go easy. This is my very first attempt at a stencil. I'd liek to poitn out i have no clue about drawing or painting, but stencil's seem to be a good medium.
This was so fun to do although my neck and cutting fingers were KILLING me the day after.
Was a photo i took of my two friends at their wedding. Gave it to them as a gift yesterday and they loved it.
It's black matte paint on 12x12 deep box canvas.
Keen for any comments, critisim. Cheers

Very First Stencil Attempt, by Coach on May 26, 2008 0:26:33 GMT 1, As a first attempt i think that's very good. I was goin to say not so sure about the subject matter, but then saw it was a wedding present for mates. If someone had given me that as a wedding present, I would have been over the moon. Would like to see some more of your work. Any ideas for your next piece? Peace c

Very First Stencil Attempt, by waXology on May 26, 2008 0:44:21 GMT 1, Thanks mate,
It was a test more than anything, just wanted to see if i could do it and how it all worked.
I think my next one will be another test, a basic multilayer stencil. Will post back when i have an update

Very First Stencil Attempt, by Coach on May 26, 2008 0:50:58 GMT 1, Well the answer is - you can do it. the real test (and this is coming from someone with no creative ability whatsoever - so it's meant in the most constructive way) is coming up with a quality subject matter/image. Good luck! c

Very First Stencil Attempt, by Grafter on May 26, 2008 9:30:13 GMT 1, I think that is very good. A little bit of underspray here and there but it adds to the charm and you'll learn to elliminate that with practice.
I think if you'd have added a little colour maybe to the flower in the lady's hair it might have given the overall piece a focal point. But, it definatley works as it is.
Reminds me a lot of this...

Very First Stencil Attempt, by Dellboyy on May 26, 2008 15:30:23 GMT 1, Looks great, especially since it's your first attempt... if you want to reduce the underspray try weighing the stencil down with a few 5p's wrapped in cling film! Little trick someone told me a while back!

Very First Stencil Attempt, by sparkledusted on May 28, 2008 3:00:21 GMT 1, alright I'm no ace stencillist, so bear that in mind, but I think this is mighty impressive...I'm saying
nice cutting, detailed and precise...hope the neck and fingers coming back for you.
good point up above about a splash of color in the flowers...I could see like the loose spray in banksy's Love is in the Air (back cover Wall and Piece) with the black stencil sprayed over giving definition.
fantastic gift! (and if you become famous and your prices go banksy, your friends will REALLY love it.)
question: how did you arrive at the final cutting image--did you use filters in photoshop, exaggerate balance in the original photo, etc.?
As a guy starting to cut some stencils, would like to know.
Thanks and keep it up.

Very First Stencil Attempt, by waXology on May 28, 2008 11:04:29 GMT 1, Hey mate,
thanks for the comments. It was actually a bit of a quick job to get it to the cutting image. I just mucked around with the threshhold in photoshop until i got something that was good to work with. that was it really.
As for the colour i did at one stage attemp to try a little mango-ish colour in the flowers but it got two complicated for a first go, so i thought i'd wait for round 2 or 3 for colour.
