Observer "Book of Art" free this Sunday, by chablis on Apr 12, 2008 21:57:16 GMT 1, If I am not mistaken I just heard an advert on TV that The Sunday Observer will include a free book on Art tomorrow.
Hopefully an Observer reader can post tomorrow and let us know if that is the case and if it is worth picking one up.

Observer "Book of Art" free this Sunday, by spencerlee on Apr 12, 2008 22:10:38 GMT 1, It was advertised last week in the paper as coming out, so I imagine it will be. They have done books on loads of different things recently, they aren't massive, about 60 pages, bits and pieces about all sorts really.

Observer "Book of Art" free this Sunday, by alsbabar on Apr 13, 2008 10:26:07 GMT 1, read the book, and right at the end, there is a one pager about "Graffiti Art", which centres mostly around Banksy (page 102 out of 112 which includes a page for credits). The guide (more than a book), centres mostly on the contemporary art scene, with little said about the current climate/artist in the ascendancy. There is a little more about the Pop Art scene, which focuses more on the established/or dead figures, ie Lichtenstein, Warhol and Johns.
The one pager on Graffiti art, mentions a little about the current Banksy prices, in particular the "wall" that DIDNT sell on ebay for ยฃ208K. It mentions a gallery in St Ives, rather than galleries like Laz/POW, Black Rat Press, Elms, who are the linchpins in the urban art movement. Mentions artists by name, rather than their works, which to me is weak, also talks more about a critic who see's Banksy's works as nothing more than "the value of a joke". The upshot I guess is that "graffiti" has now been established as art, rather than vandalism!!!!
All in all was it worth getting out of bed early to ensure I picked up this guide, yes, because I had to anyway, as I had no milk in the house. Would I have paid ยฃ2 for this book alone, no I wouldnt have, but given that the shopkeeper mistakenly put this book in with my News of the World (which I may add, states more about urban art, then the observer book), then who am I to complain.
Enjoy your Sunday reading

Liverpool 2-0 United 3-0
Think that's Arsenals season gone now
Chelsea to win on Monday, but to slip up and draw at Everton, United to beat Blackburn to go 5 points clear and rest players in the Chelsea match

Observer "Book of Art" free this Sunday, by chablis on Apr 13, 2008 12:16:36 GMT 1, No problems with the hijack, it was never a serious thread. Unfortunately I know less about football than I do about brain surgery. But at least I have the weekends / evenings relatively stress free and I have saved a fortune by not buying tickets for the footie. Drink yes, smoke no, now if only I could kick the art habit...
