Tibet, Olympics, china,, by GD303uk on Apr 7, 2008 12:20:52 GMT 1, what did you all think about the Olympic flame run yesterday? i was proud to see the people of Britain cause a fuss around it and bring to attention the oppression of Tibet and the human rights issues in China, it was interesting to see Olympic and police spokes men talk of anarchists and trouble causes when it was clearly normal people concerned about Tibet and China, to see the police tackle people for waving a flag or wearing a tshirt made my blood boil but not as much as seeing some of the idiots caring the flame say sport and politics shouldn't mix, naive and plays into the hand of our governments and chinas spin, if politics has nothing to do with sport why was it so important to china that Brown (cunt) had to meet the flame. a big up to all the people who made the Olympic flame relay a PR disaster and embarrassment for china. thanks

Tibet, Olympics, china,, by mcnuts on Apr 7, 2008 12:33:25 GMT 1, must agree with silky *shock* *horror* london police arent exactly friendly either and glad they got called for it. To be honest, all the talk of "the Olympics isnt about sport its about unity" was doing my head in. The Olympics is all about politics and nationalism, sport is simply a veil. Why do you think during the cold war eastern block countries pumped children full of steroids or countries judge โhow good they areโ based on a medial count?
I agree, the Olympics does provide an opportunity to showcase Chinaโs human rights record but there are issues as to why they got awarded the Olympic sin the first place and I think there should be a proper boycott just like in 1936. Anyway, the Olympics in my mind are, or at least have become a total farce.

Tibet, Olympics, china,, by chrisoffbeat on Apr 7, 2008 12:38:15 GMT 1, That was the best afternoon's TV entertainment for a long time. Well done the blokes with the fire extinguisher. And Konnie Huq for inadvertantly providing the best TV moment involving a kids TV presenter since the Five Star/Matt Bianco phone-in incidents on Sat morning TV.
What I'd really have liked though would have been for one of the athletes or pompus celebs carrying the torch to suddenly stop, blow it out, and rip off their tracksuit revealing the words FREE TIBET on a T-Shirt underneath!
Diappointed to see so many sporting heroes joining in though... Paula Radcliffe especially; given her very strong moral stance against drugs in sport (I recall she once protested on a lap of honour) seemed strange that she was unable to take a similar stand when people's lives rather than a medal were at stake.

I loved the bit when the person interviewing Connie asked her if she was wearing anything under her track suit! She said NO

BONGO IS ALWAYS AWARE THAT THERE IS MORE THAN ONE VIEWPOINT TO ANY STORY. BONGO GLAD TO SEE ACTIVISM WITHOUT INJURY, BUT BONGO ALSO CONSIDERS THE PERSPECTIVE THAT WE ALL TACITLY OR NOT SUPPORT BY CHINESE REGIME BY OUR WESTERN FETISHMENT OF CONSUMER ITEMS AND ELECTRONIC GOODS.
BONGO NOTE THAT THE SHOES WORN BY PROTESTORS LIKELY TO BE CHINESE MADE, DITTO MOBILE PHONES AND SUCHLIKE.
BONGO DOES NOT WISH TO DERIDE PROTESTORS AND DOES ACCEPT THAT IN TERMS OF PUBLICITY , THE PROTESTS ACHIEVED THEIR AIM, IF NOT ANY LASTING EFFECT ON CHINESE REGIME
BUT BONGO THINKS A WIDER VIEW NEEDS TO BE CONSIDERED - AN JOLLY AFTERNOON IN THE OPEN AIR IS AN EASY DAY OUT AND MAY EASE ONES GUILT ABOUT NOT BEING INVOLVED, BUT IS A DIVERSIONARY IRRELEVANCE SOME OF CYNICAL OUTLOOK MIGHT SAY.
TIBET IS NOT THE ISSUE , DESPITE THE HEADLINES
CHINA COULD BE CONSIDERED AN EASY TARGET, BUT ITS POWER GROWS BECAUSE OF THE NATURE OF OUR SOCIETY IN MANY WAYS.
IT IS AN INTRUIGING QUANDRY

Tibet, Olympics, china,, by Gentle Mental on Apr 7, 2008 14:17:44 GMT 1, Despite what you guys think, China is still one of the poorest country in the world. And her children live under what I'd think is the most polluted skies and rivers in the world, whilst most of their parents work in the assembly lines inside toxic-fumed factory for less a cup of starbuck per 12 hour shift, just so developed nations can have their blue skies, apple pies and ipods and plastic happy meal toys.
I really don't know... to me, it feels like bullying. Another act of arm twisting, making the poor beg, bend over etc.
It's like a group of rich kids kicking a poor kid for one mistake he made 5 years ago on his a once-in-lifetime birthday party to be attended by his rich western parents.
That's how it feels over here. Everyone has worked so hard to make this event a success, despite the poverty, the pride is clearly evident, they've cleaned up the streets, the locals learned English, the farmers, street cleaners, the out-of-town villagers, learned to be "civilized" to welcome you.
precious you.
I'm in China now, but I'm not Chinese, and iit's me humble opinion is all. peace.

But do consider all sides prior, is all i ask.
I know it's nearly impossible to convince people on the outside to see what's inside, but do explore a tad more, and not join something because a popular person said so.
This kind of reminds me of that Damien Hirst's Shark installation.

Tibet, Olympics, china,, by otomi on Apr 7, 2008 16:51:56 GMT 1, I think having the Olympics in China show the government there it is right what they are doing. The same happened in 1936 with the German nazi government it was the biggest boost they ever got from the international community. I can feel with the people in Tibet I grew up in East Germany and Russia was our China. I hope that a boycott will happen somehow because the politicians are certainly not doing anything.

you won't understand how it really feels to be dead when you're alive. all you see is a beautifully shark in all its glory (albeit it's lack of movement).

The Olympics will not help the poor people in any way. They will not be able to go to any events and they probably can't even see it on TV because they have to work 20h in some sweatshop.

If you live in a country like that nothing the government does makes you feel proud the only hope for their children is to get rid of their corrupt leaders. The communist party shot thousands of their own people.

Tibet, Olympics, china,, by sahoria on Apr 7, 2008 17:16:18 GMT 1, its an honour for any country to host the olympics... and i am sure the children there will be getting up each day excited when the olympics are on... the shaolin movement stalled in the early 80`s until film came out called shaolin temple... it was one of the films that most people there say contributed to the new birth of the shaolin movement which was fantastic news... but if you go and actually study there you will find most places teach wu shu as the government thought it looked more pleasing to the eye...there are still some schools around that teach original gongfu but not to many...
im not saying who is right and wrong in this thread think everyone has made valid points but to not talk about what is going on in tibet i think would be wrong... its a shame that there will be time delay in showing live events in china also just incase there is protests at the main events...
i was there when SARS first came about also and as much as it was documented around the world the villages i went to no one knew about it at all... it took the government a long time to actually say they had a problem... again because they are proud nation but eventually they asked for help... i am hoping they do hold discussions with dalai lama representatives but in truth do not think that is going to happen....
not to many said anything about what happened in nanking neither... we all make mistakes and think it is the generations after that will pick up the pieces... it is great for the chinese people to accept people into there country to show how beautiful china can be but like wise it is important to show people the struggles they face also... lets just hope things get better for everyone...s

We kept a few back to sell to defray dr.d's expenses so she can do her next one. There isn't a snowball's chance of even breaking even though. It wasn't the point of doing it.
