What sort of paper is Cougar Cover 80lb?, by seidbereit on Mar 25, 2008 20:31:46 GMT 1, I've been thinking of getting a Sam3 print from Paper Monster as, in terms of image, it will sit very nicely (I think) with some other prints going on my wall soon - but I'm wondering about the paper it's on which is described as Cougar Cover 80lb.
I get the impression it's a really stiff type of paper and am therefore not sure of its suitability for float mounting (which would match the other pieces best).
Has anyone got any idea what Cougar Cover 80lb paper is like (i.e. is it soft or stiff). Thanks

What sort of paper is Cougar Cover 80lb?, by scoote on Mar 25, 2008 21:22:11 GMT 1, I'm taking a bit of a flyer on this, but if the conversion charts are correct 80lbs translate to around 118.4gsm. This is a good quality letterhead stock. So really in the world of print not heavy at all, certainly not stiff.

I love Sam3 & got both these prints as soon as Papermonster opened (I have #1 of the Giraffe!) It's not stiff at all... i'd guess about 250gsm paper similar to, but probably even a bit lighter than something like Napalm. The border is very white. Lovely prints....

Maybe that's closer than my guess. They're great image slightly spoilt by not being on the best quality paper.

What sort of paper is Cougar Cover 80lb?, by seidbereit on Mar 25, 2008 22:29:43 GMT 1, Thanks for the replies scoote and PA - I didn't think about there being something like a conversion chart I could have referred to (d'oh! ;D)...
Hmmm, though... 118 grams doesn't seem to be very much at all - in fact it seems off-puttingly lightweight to me as surely the ink used for printing will have caused some rippling of its own. Have you had yours framed PA? Would love to know how, if so.
I now more undecided than ever even though I really love the image!

What sort of paper is Cougar Cover 80lb?, by Heavyconsumer on Mar 25, 2008 23:26:47 GMT 1, Sam 3 had a gorgeous piece on the SG site this year, I preferred that image to these on papermonster. The giraffes one is very cool though and the pricing is fair on these too. If I had a need for an extra little piece in the corner I'd think about this for ยฃ75 for sure. I foolishly take for granted that most prints will come on pretty high quality art paper. I guess I should start paying more attention! Thanks for the eye-opener seid'!

What sort of paper is Cougar Cover 80lb?, by wimpy on Mar 26, 2008 11:19:14 GMT 1, Generally...
80 lb cover is actually 216 gsm.
80 lb text would be 118 gsm.
It is a bit more refined than that simple conversion, though, as paper dimensions aren't a factor in gsm. For example, a stack of 500 tiny pieces of paper that are super thick and a stack of 500 light pieces of large sized paper could end up being the same gsm.

What sort of paper is Cougar Cover 80lb?, by scoote on Mar 26, 2008 14:01:24 GMT 1, Good point Wimpy I figured that 120gsm seemed a bit light for a print. It also seems that gsm is a much more accurate description of weight than the american method of grading paper in lbs. The general rule of thumb seems to be that if you convert lbs to gsm the text to cover lbs ratio would be double, making the 120gsm text actually around 240gsm. I think this seems about right, to think that I work in print too, doh...

What sort of paper is Cougar Cover 80lb?, by wimpy on Mar 26, 2008 16:40:58 GMT 1, Yeah. It really makes me only ever order stuff I've physically seen and touched before. I'm not brave in making the conversions myself and hoping the texture is what I want either.
