Banksy paints himself into Ken's corner
Matthew Taylor Friday February 1, 2008 The Guardian
His last foray into the world of politics saw him travel to Bethlehem to paint satirical murals highlighting the plight of the Palestinian people. Now Banksy, the secretive street artist, has turned his attention to domestic issues, agreeing to support London mayor Ken Livingstone's bid for re-election.
The artist, whose works have fetched more than ยฃ300,000 at auction, is one of more than 20 leading figures from the art world who are donating work to the Bid for Ken auction. Yesterday Livingstone, who is standing for re-election in May, said: "London is a city where the arts flourish. Artists in all fields make a central contribution to how we see our city and our society as a whole."
According to the mayor's campaign team, Banksy is creating a work which will go on sale in March alongside pieces from Antony Gormley, who created the Angel of the North, and Jeremy Deller, who won the Turner prize in 2004. The race to become mayor of London does not officially begin until March but Livingstone's battle with Boris Johnson already promises to be the closest - and most bitter - contest since the post was established eight years ago.
Livingstone's administration has come under sustained attack over allegations of corruption while his Tory rival Johnson was forced to apologise for referring to black people as "piccaninnies" in a newspaper article.
Also among the artists who have signed up are Richard Hamilton, Billy Childish, Mona Hatoum, Jamie Reid, Peter Kennard and Geraldine Swayne. Marc Quinn, whose study of a pregnant disabled woman went on display on the fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square, will also contribute.

You shouldn't be too suprised. Enough people voted in a right(ish) wing government in the last election. I take it we've stopped pretending that Labour are a left wing/socialist party.

Banksy & Ken Livingstone?, by danvnuk on Feb 1, 2008 14:56:03 GMT 1, I'd vote for Boris as well - Red Ken has his chance, and seems to have run out of steam some time ago, and is now going the way of all Politicians in office too long - mired in corruption.
In any case, London needs someone with charisma and personality - and Boris has it in spades.
He's also delightfully un-PC. Political correctness being something I believe is wrecking this country and eating it from within.
For example, I know he upset the scousers with his Spectator article - but it was actually well observed and had an element of truth in it if applied to the country as a whole.
This public outpouring of grief bandwagon the country seems to be throwing itself on at every opportunity, (the origins of which seemed to begin when Princess Di wrapped herself into a concrete pillar in Paris) is cringe-worthy and appalling.
So here's to Boris ;D

NO BLOODY WAY
Racist bafoon public schoolboys with no decent politics don't get my vote. Charisma he may have...a brain - he doesn't.
Just to elaborate on the racist bafoon point...here is a poem he had on his webiste - only to be hurrily taken down once it was mentioned as being racist on the news:
โWe have hobby, it's called breeding. Welfare pay for baby feeding. Kids need dentist? Wife need pills? We get free! We got no bills!โ
โBritain crazy! They pay all year, To keep welfare running here. We think UK darn good place. Too darn good for the white man race! If they no like us, they can scram. Got lots of room in Pakistan!โ:
What a nice chap he is. Yeah I'll be voting for him!!!! NOT!!!

Politics normally drives everyone loopy and foaming at the mouth on the forum- but hey ho.
I've never for one moment thought that Boris is unintelligent, or his only attribute of worth is charisma (I'm presuming that's what you mean when you describe running 'complex' London)
I'm pretty sure he's upto the job of running London, he's as qualified as the rest of the politicians in the running - I mean, at least he's had a job outside Politics for crissake - Red Ken has basically been a politician since he was born.....I don't entirely trust people like that.
Don't get me wrong, I don't think Red Ken has done too bad - but he's been in the job long enough, he's getting a bit tarnished (as all politicians do when in power for too long) it's time to let someone else have a go, and out of the contenders IMO Boris is head and shoulders above everyone else.

I'm insinuating nothing danvnuk, there's no need - Boris Johnson is well-documented on his views. An out-and-out racist playing the "floppy buffoon" card imho I reserve the right to express surprise that some people in a cultured, art-collectors forum, support such a man.
Well documented, out and out racist - I must be reading the wrong newspapers.
In any case, based on your remark....
If that's not insinuation - then that taken with your other remarks mean your accusing me, and anyone else on this forum who expressed an interest in Boris Johnson becoming Mayor of being racist by association.

I reserve my right as one the obviously uncultured art-collectors to tell you to get f*cked and shove your slyly worded accusations up your arse.

Banksy & Ken Livingstone?, by valeha on Feb 1, 2008 20:27:20 GMT 1, danvnuk - not sure what newspapers you read but Boris has clearly made racist remarks. The fact that you support him, however, does not make you a racist in any way - it just means you support a bafoon - which you are more than entitled to. Telling people to get fcuked doesn't do your argument any favours - just serves to piss people off - surely there is nothing wrong with a decent debate.

The way I read it - his rascist remarks - references to piccaninnies don't really strike me as being a blatant rascist.....more the result of growing up with the background he has. I mean a piccaninnies?!!! who says that? I don't even know what it means
Oh - as for pissing people off, I'm sorry - being accused in a backhanded way of being a rascist pisses me off just an itsy bit. But I guess what I think doesn't matter - as I'm for a Buffoon.
Political threads always end up this way - I promised myself to avoid them in the past, but couldn't help but stick my nose into this one.
I won't be contributing to this accusation-fest any further.

In my city we have a massive population of Eastern Europeans, some i know very well. And they are more than happy to laugh at us for everything that is possible for them when living here. It's a very horrible thing to have to re-read and re-read things before posting, for fear of being called racist
I say let Boris have a go now, he is many things but stupid is not one of them IMO

"And they are more than happy to laugh at us for everything that is possible for them when living here." What is the problem with laughing. They are not hunting you with baseball bats or tell you to move somewhere else. There are a few funny things about the UK - you have a Queen for starters.
WTF: "He's also delightfully un-PC. Political correctness being something I believe is wrecking this country and eating it from within." How do you come up with that. Not calling someone a ***** because he is different eats England from within?

I don't even know what it means Oh - as for pissing people off, I'm sorry - being accused in a backhanded way of being a rascist pisses me off just an itsy bit. But I guess what I think doesn't matter - as I'm for a Buffoon. Political threads always end up this way - I promised myself to avoid them in the past, but couldn't help but stick my nose into this one. I won't be contributing to this accusation-fest any further.
ok where to start. With reference to his disgusting terminology - u may not know what it means - but Boris obviously does.
who accused u? No one accused u of anything. I have said if u support him it is by no means an indication of u being a racist - but yeah I stand by the fact that u support an utter moron. Good for you.
Indeed u could argue Ken has made a moron of himself on occasions - which I wouldn't deny.
curios george if u want to agree with a disgraceful poem - that's ur prerogative - however misguided it is.
danvnuk - not sure what newspapers you read but Boris has clearly made racist remarks.
