Favourite New Music of the '07, by numusic on Dec 7, 2007 13:51:33 GMT 1, Burial album is the best of the year for me Totally agree on the Burial recommendation (Album name: untrue). An interesting album for anyone wanting to dip their toes into Dub Step. It's quite dark & beautiful in an Aphex Twin sort of way; the type of music I would prefer to be listening to on my way home in a cab at 3am. However it certainly falls into the experimental music category so won't be everyone's cup of tea. Oh, and personally, the synthesised distorted vocals that RnB producers love really grates. So, job done.. my "recommendation" will probably result in everyone avoiding this album like the plague! Oh and if you do buy it, play track 13 "raver" first; easily the most accessible on the whole album. Otherwise, a quiet year for me music wise was lifted by the release of the highlights of Orbital live at Glastonbury over the last decade. For a group that were alway 10 times better live, this album was long overdue.
Got it on rotation for the past month.. plus the first album in the car 2006's #01 album for me. "Untrue" By far the most interesting album of the past few months..
Check out the Burial remix of Jamie Woon's "wayfaring stranger" best track of the year.. oh, check the original gospel version too.

Favourite New Music of the '07, by brenclan on Dec 7, 2007 14:44:41 GMT 1, Funny that we have dub step and 20s music being mentioned in the same thread as it reminded me of something John Peel used to do on his show where he would play something soulful and otherworldly and then immediately follow it with some minimal techno.
For some reason the two go so well together! If you were to take, say, an Ella Fitzgerald track from the 40s / 50s you would feel transported back into an alternative world thats sets your mind to reflecting. Then follow it up with some minimal techno and rather than the expected "jolt" from one track to the other, the reflecting mood attained continues. I'm sure there's a technical name for this state of being...
.. and it's not called "stoned" lol

Listened to a lot of John Peel in the late 70's and early 80's, hence my eclectic tastes.

IMO it is simple, if it is good i will listen to it. Do not really care about genres etc.. ;D

I used to have a stock answer when I was asked what kind of music I liked, it was "anything as long as it's good" which means everything and nothing really.

Modest Mouse have been around for years! If you like the new stuff, check out some of the older stuff! Songs like Interstate 8, All Night Diner, Cowboy Dan, Truckers Atlas etc!
Plus, for the later stuff, the album before Good News is pretty good, called The Moon And Antartica!

Favourite New Music of the '07, by brenclan on Dec 9, 2007 12:49:43 GMT 1, Just in case there is someone on this forum who makes electronic music, I'm looking for a little advice. I currently use FruityLoops on a laptop + external soundcard (a very dodgy MAudio Quattro) + keyboard, but am looking to upgrade. Should I go for Reason or Cubase? How can I reduce the latency further? What extra could a Korg Trinity give me? What setups do ppl llike Boards of Canada & Burial use?
Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Favourite New Music of the '07, by brut on Dec 9, 2007 13:07:42 GMT 1, Seen quite a few bands again this year, some very poor(Hadouken) & some very good,(Arcade Fire,Editors & Interpol). I think it's been a poor year for new music with exception to one band who kind of blew me away with what they are doing. They are called Late of the pier. You can check them out on myspace. Not been a great year for albums but i seem to be the only one who loved the interpol album.I think their writing gets stronger with every release which is a rare thing these days.

Favourite New Music of the '07, by darko on Dec 9, 2007 13:10:36 GMT 1, Hmm... off the top of my head: LCD Soundsystem keeps getting better. The new mixes by Gucci Soundsystem, Soulwax & Carl Craig are amazing. Arcade Fire, Map of Africa, Justice, Arctic Monkeys, Chaz Jankel - My Occupation, Burial - Untrue, And my favourites are probably the After Dark and Dirty Edits compilations, 'We Can Create' by Maps and 'Kala' by MIA. www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/record_review/43712-after-darkI've no doubt forgotten a lot that should be listed Dirty Edits is amazing we have sold like 500 of that in our store everytime we play it ithe chris issak covers cracks me up and confuses the hell outta the customers ! loads of great records this year +1 on the Burial album - reminds me the first time I heard portishead- very dense and and almost orchestral and composer-ish in the way it is put together - unlike any other dubstep around and all the better for it. agree on wooden shjips + Holy f**k record is amazing totally noisy yet very danceable Dan deacon rules No Age f**ked Up year of the pig Interpol Pissed Jeans
Vampire Weekend- they are going to be huge next year agree on Maximo awful record over produced, with only a couple of great songs on it... still great live tho. has anyone heard the jeffrey Lewis record of Crass covers? in an anti folk style - very cool. After Dark comp is good , but both Chromatics and glass Candy albums are the real gems from IDIB this year ! Foals have dropped consistently great singles this year and get better with each live show they do. For me this year has been a winner and better than the last couple with lots of great new exciting bands to watch out for .
If anyone cares all of our store 2007 top tens are here www.roughtrade.com/site/content.lasso?page=top10charts.html
