Favourite New Music of the '07, by morrissey1 on Dec 6, 2007 22:36:02 GMT 1, Was wondering what everyone's favourite new music of the year was......as someone who is obsessed with art and music equally, love to hear what everyone else is into
my pick would have to be The Red Romance. A great band out of NYC, a couple members used to be in Ambulance Ltd. Check out their songs at
www.theredromance.com
Reminds me of the grand ol' days of Britpop (for a Canadian like myself, Britpop was huge in the 90's here).....
oh, how nice

I know I sound like a kook, but you should visit the Red Romance's website (if you liked Ambulance Ltd)...and give the songs a go....truly great stuff....I saw them live earlier in the year, opening for the Killers, and they made the killers look sad in comparison....

Favourite New Music of the '07, by mike hunt on Dec 6, 2007 23:41:06 GMT 1, I am going to be a grumpy old git here, but I think most new music has been really mediocre. Very little music that I haven't heard a million times before and has been done a lot better. Hiphop died when J-Dilla died, but his album (featuring everyone) came out in 2007 I think - absolute quality (apart from track one - shut up Busta Gonad Rhymes!). No-one could copy his beats. Guitar wise, everyone sounds like a poor copy of the specials, the beatles, the stones or all 3 - except for one shining light...the white stripes. They have a new sound. I think it comes from the fact that there is only a guitarist and drummer (husband and wife) and the guitar goes into a box which splits it into 3 noises. They have a dirty, garage, hick noise and its fresh.
Soulwise, Jill Scott is okay, but she's no Marvin Gaye - but then, almost everyone is rubbish in comparison. However, Jazzy Jeff is an absolute legend and his production is fantastic. Your mrs would probably like Jill Scott.
House - gone underground again, which is great because it got too commercial and wanky (is that a real word?). I like the Jason Air mix of Far Horizons by DJ Cristo (especially like the artwork!). I think i should shut up now, except to say...you started it!

I would say Hip Hop died late 80's early 90's for me. I still find refreshing bands as Prefuse, Evil9, Aesop and alike for mixing underground electronic sounds and vibes with the more traditional lyrics.
Soulwise I will go for Curtis all the way despite liking Marvin too... Like a lot Lauryn Hill and Mrs Baddhu if it can be classified into soul...

Then followed up by Kings of Leon, because of the times. I know not groundbreaking, but I love both those albums. Again mainstream as hell, but a special mention to Radiohead in rainbows.

Favourite New Music of the '07, by manchestermike on Dec 7, 2007 11:34:07 GMT 1, I'm trying to think... there hasn't been a whole lot for me this year... there has been a whole lot of hyped shyte that people go crazy over - Arctic Monkeys for one... what was that all about, it's even worse than their first album... which was fucking awful.
I'm going to stick to my thoughts on more mainstream music or you'll all be bored stiff by the time I've finished prattling on about Eastern European techno...
January as always was a quiet month, however the release of Lily Allen's 'Alright Still' brightened up the dark winter nights for a lot of people, quirky, fun, don't give a fuck... whatever you say about her she can write a tune.
Bloc Party's 'A Weekend in the City' (Released in February) was a disappointment after their first album, but anything was going to be after 'Silent Alarm'... it's still a pretty good album though that's worth a listen or two.
Arcade Fire's 'Neon Bible' (March) isn't bad... they wind me up and I don't particularly like them too much but it's hard to deny that it's a good album and LCD Soundsystem's 'Sound of Silver' (March) again, while not quite matching up to their fabulous self titled album of 2005 is a definite contender for album of the year...
Another hot contender has to be Kings of Leon's 'Because of the Times' (April) a seriously good album with exceptionally catchy lyrics and music... it's pop music but not as we know it. The KOL fans will vociferously deny it's pop, but pop it is, and damn good pop. April also saw the release of 'Favourite Worst Nightmare' by the Arctic Monkeys who are possibly the single most over hyped band ever. A turgid album which has taken the band no further than their last one, which in my opinion isn't far at all.
May saw the return of the Manic Street Preachers with more dross in 'Send Away The Tigers', I wish someone would send away the Manics, they had their 15 seconds of fame with From Despair to Where and have served to hang about and irritate ever since. May was a month for bollocks though with releases from Maroon 5, the Bravery and Travis cluttering up shelves with staid pap.
June was a month that started well for R&B fans with Rhianna's 'Good Girl Gone Bad' which is alright if that sort of stuff tickles yer pickle, not my cup of tea really, but better than 99% of the bullcrap that passes as R&B these days. Unfortunately the White Stripes returned with their 5th (I think) album of the same old rubbish with 'Icky Thump' but thankfully the month was saved by the back on form Chemical Brothers with 'We Are the Night' and another album of the year contender in 'An End Has a Start' by The Editiors.
Two albums that could have been great followed in July, and they were both disappointing, 'Our Love to Admire' by Interpol and 'Zeitgeist' from the Smashing Pumpkins.
Thankfully Public Enemy's 'How You Sell Soul to a Soulless People Who Sold Their Soul?' gave people something to listen to in August, their 10th album and one of their very best and in September The Go! Team again gave people something to smile about with 'Proof of Youth' which while never reaching the heights of 'Thunder, Lightning, Strike' once again showcased their great amount of talent and Kanye West's 'Graduation' is a grower if there ever was one.
Back to overhyped rubbish in October with 'Shotter Nation' the second effort from Babyshambles which caused mass swooning amongst Doherty wannabes and wannafucks across the country. I can't say anything nice about the band or the album, so as my mum taught me I won't say anything at all. Radiohead's 'In Rainbows' however brought some light to the month with a truly stunning album and a great return to form after 'Hail to the Thief' - in all probability this IS the album of the year.
November saw The Killers' 'Sawdust' which again was something and nothing... 'Hot Fuss' was very good but 'Sam's Town' was a step down, 'Sawdust' is another drop and maybe it's time for the Killers to take a break and write some good songs rather than rush another album out, I mean look at what Radiohead have just done, it's taken 4 years, but it's been worth every minute...

Kings of Leon 'Because of the Times' Hammersmith Apollo Editors 'An End has a Start' Brixton Academy
Walking to work this morning with shuffle on the pod and one of the best singles of the year has to be 'Empire' by Kasabian. Great tune.

As for gigs, Emmy the Great, Frank Turner, Jacob Golden, Maximo Park, Ani Difranco, Forward Russia, Monkey Swallows the Universe were all fantastic.

I'm not at the moment, but I'm thinking about it, I've seen them three times in the last 18 months which is a lot for me so I may wait until next time they play. Saw them earlier this year the Academy 3 which was brilliant as it's such a tiny venue and though it was full there were only 250 people there at most. I'm also seeing Sasha on Friday night so kind of saving myself for that as it'll be a mad one ;D

Favourite New Music of the '07, by headphonesex on Dec 7, 2007 13:13:11 GMT 1, Hmm... off the top of my head: LCD Soundsystem keeps getting better. The new mixes by Gucci Soundsystem, Soulwax & Carl Craig are amazing. Arcade Fire, Map of Africa, Justice, Arctic Monkeys, Chaz Jankel - My Occupation, Burial - Untrue,
And my favourites are probably the After Dark and Dirty Edits compilations, 'We Can Create' by Maps and 'Kala' by MIA.

I've no doubt forgotten a lot that should be listed

Totally agree on the Burial recommendation (Album name: untrue). An interesting album for anyone wanting to dip their toes into Dub Step. It's quite dark & beautiful in an Aphex Twin sort of way; the type of music I would prefer to be listening to on my way home in a cab at 3am. However it certainly falls into the experimental music category so won't be everyone's cup of tea. Oh, and personally, the synthesised distorted vocals that RnB producers love really grates. So, job done.. my "recommendation" will probably result in everyone avoiding this album like the plague! Oh and if you do buy it, play track 13 "raver" first; easily the most accessible on the whole album.
Otherwise, a quiet year for me music wise was lifted by the release of the highlights of Orbital live at Glastonbury over the last decade. For a group that were alway 10 times better live, this album was long overdue.
