Come on England!, by pezlow on Nov 22, 2007 9:45:13 GMT 1, As for this too many foreign players in the premiership rubbish what about our failure to qualify for USA 94. That was at a time when there were hardly any foreign players in the premiership.
I would say the problem with the current team is down to the manager and also the overpampered professional footballers this country produces. The latter problem would only get worse if English players believed that they were more prized in their domestic league than their foreign counterparts.

Sorry to be a Poindexter about this, but France has about 15m to 20m more people than England. Roughly same number of people live in France as entire UK. Doesn't account for Scotland though... merely a point of statistical order

Come on England!, by streetgirl on Nov 22, 2007 10:48:34 GMT 1, What a fucking night....so much to say.
- Yes Maclaren should go and indeed has now gone. - Brian Barwick also needs to be questioned about his position. - However, problems with the England team run far deeper than either of these men.
There's something rotten at the core of the national side, be it a - lack of development at grass roots level, b - disparity of 'homegrown' talent in club squads, c - that the players are over paid, d -they have more allegiance themselves to their clubs rather than their country, e - they play a longer season than other leagues and so don't have enough time together.
Yes Arsenal are talked about a lot, but Man U, Liverpool, Chelsea, Man City, Portsmouth, Boro, Newcastle etc etc are all under fire if the argument about capping foreign players is being used. More Scottish players than English players have been fielded in the Champions League. Harry Redknapp said it himself....'why do I buy African players with the same skill level as an English player? because they are hungrier, they have more passion because they come from deprived, poverty stricken countries, they play for you week in week out as though their lives depended on it, because they do'
Slate Beckham all you like, but for me, watching him on the bench at 2-0 down he was the only one that looked concerned, he came on and he's the only one bombing around (well, as much as he can) trying to turn the game around.
Finally....for me it's going to be interesting to see what ratio of the great England U21 team actually develop in and become Senior players.....so many of them have played well at that level and never moved into regular senior play. er, i'll get off my soap box now.

The way they get thro adversity is rolling over in the box like a big girls blouse looking as though they had just copped a shard of shrapnel from a land mine in the leg putting out hard battling teams that should of won. Now that IS a fooking disgrace!!!

Come on England!, by leehambly on Nov 22, 2007 11:01:15 GMT 1, just to throw my tuppence in about the foreign player capping... the proposals, I believe, are slightly different to how this kind of thing used to be, ie: max of 3 foreign players and is now more along the lines of min 3 English players, which can't be an entirely bad thing from a developmental perspective... thats my take on it anyway. Wenger had something to say on this which was quite cheeky and thoroughly thought out and totally ruined it (can't for the life of me remember now)... typical Wenger really (both the comment and memory!).
On the other oft-mentioned note about overpaid players... with most of the best paid players in the premiership being foreign: why doesnt the big time charlie factor affect those teams, too? I s'pose it does some of them (France, Holland, Spain, even Brazil all have their issues) but not all... something aint right somewhere though and its not just on the pitch. I blame the boots.

Come on England!, by taco on Nov 22, 2007 11:12:49 GMT 1, England never fail to disappoint. They are just not good enough. Sorry rudeboyrupert but your Wenger like paranoid rantings are wrong, there does need to be a limit on foreign players in the English football. And that includes all teams not just Arsenal. There are just not enough talented youngsters being brought through and given expert coaching. It is so much easier to buy some cheap and not so cheap foreign import to try and bring the clubs some kind of immediate results. It's all now, now now! Look how well Scotland played in these qualifiers, they may not have got through but they were a far better team than our own england s**te. Scotland doesn't have the import of as many foreign players as us and so have developed into a very good team. And, also compare the number of people in Scotland to England. If France has a smaller population than us and a far better national side. Also, if it is true that Liverpool have used less English players than Arsenal, then doesn't that tell you something when their Captain says there should be a limit. Maybe it is not Arsenal he is having a go at!
Surely that's what the other divisions are for? I don't think the reason Scotland played so well is becaue of the lack of foreign players in the scottish league after all rangers and celtic have plenty. I think it's cause they played with pride and passion and all gave 100%, a far cry from englands performance last night. Also they have a manager with atleast a bit more skill than your average champ manager player...

Come on England!, by teatwosugars on Nov 22, 2007 12:21:44 GMT 1, beckham is s hit as are england. can't wait for super f ucking stevie g and the rest of the idiot in-ger-lund! xenophobes to pipe back up and blame arsenal for all this. us and our bloody jonny foreigners...... can i just point out that arsenal have used the same amount of englishmen this season as liverpool, bolton, blackburn and portsmouth, there may be others but i can't find the piece right now. and we're top of the league. and our striker set up the second goal. england are s**t because we got rid of the organ grinder and employed the f ucking monkey. i'm gutted england will not go to the finals but if it costs mclaren and barwick their jobs then it is a cross i'm happy to bear.
Sorry Tom, I'd love to see the article because I've got to disagree with you there.
Correct me if I'm wrong (which I'm sure you will! ) but Arsenal have used four- Walcott, the Hoyte boys and Gibbs (and out of those I'd only just consider Theo and Justin to be first team players at the moment, and even then they're still trying to secure a starting place).
Now Bolton are obvious and I'm not even going to comment on them, but Blackburn, Liverpool and Pompey? Blackburn have Warnock, Bentley, Dunn, Derbyshire, Reid and Liverpool have Carragher, Gerrard, Pennant, Crouch (and Hobbs if we're putting kids who have only played one or two games into the equation). These sets of players are far more established in their squads and I don't think you can compare. And as for Pompey? What about James, Johnson, Campbell, Nugent, Taylor, Primus, Davis.....?
Now, regardless of this, I think people who blame the state of the England team on Arsenal are wrong. As Pez said earlier, the England team has been an issue far longer than the influx of foreigners. And as Arsenal fans, you know you're gonna take s**t- there will always be jealousy and hatred towards the top four sides, and people will use any excuse to get at you.
Now it seems to me that you, along with all my mates that are gooners, are more than happy to see the number of foreigners you've got at your club. And fair play to you. If your happy having a French speaking dressing room at your club then enjoy! I mean, your top of the league aren't you?!
What I wish though is that Arsenal fans would stop confusing xenophobia with patriotism. Are we really living in times when it is wrong to show English pride? (although that is severely lacking after last nights f**kin disgrace)!!! For me, I take great pride in the fact that my club tries its hardest to produce young English players (even if we have been prone to bloody selling them ). There's a tradition there that I love, and I hope we continue to do it, even if it means never winning anything. I seem to remember Arsenal being exceptionally proud of their English back four not so long ago.
Differing opinions make football great. The game wouldn't be the same without the arguments and banter. This is my opinion and I know others will disagree. I think having foreign players in the football leagues makes it far more entertaining, though I would like to see more English players at clubs like Arsenal. That said, it certainly isn't the cause of the demise of English football. There are far too may other reasons why we're s**t at the moment, and using teams like Arsenal as a scapegoat isn't going to get us anywhere.

a few years ago rangers and celtic packed their teams with players from other countries and scotland were awful, i remeber going to 2 watch matches with 4000 fans, bad times
but now the top clubs in scotland build their team on scottish tallent, rangers have 8 scottish players starting usually, and could field a very strong starting 11 of scotsmen, the scottish team have been doing us proud and it was no coincidence that out of the 11 against italy, 7 were from the old firm, not inclduing many on the bench
also england have no heart or fight - bring on the home nations ;D

why are we talking about limiting foreign players in the English premiership? England have just failed to qualify from a group that which included the likes of Israel,Andorra and Estonia. To blame the amount of foreign players in top flight football for this is ridiculous. The entire England squad (bar Beckham) play club football in one the best leagues in the world the English premiership. The first choice players comprise mostly of the big four teams or the in form teams. this could not be said for the Macedonia team yet they managed to draw against us. Do they even have a domestic football league in Macedonia? This also could not be said for Israel who also got a draw against us. the two players that featured in that game for Israel that do play in the premiership don't even play at one of the top teams. In fact the one Israeli player that is a player at one of the big four clubs is not even a first choice player. to summarise blaming foreign players is not an excuse in fact i think it is a joke to even bring it up when you look at the group that they had to qualify from

Come on England!, by lesbianwednesdays on Nov 22, 2007 14:06:34 GMT 1, let me just make this absdolutely crystal:
english football and footballers are what they are for a reason. the FA were going to build a centre of excellence at burton on trent i believe but never got it finished. that is the problem. arsenal can take players from europe, africa and south america in to their academy but they can take a boy more than a 90 minute drive, so say southampton, swindon, birmingham, lincoln etc are further than we are allowed to cast our net, complete bollox.
as for this bullshit about foreign players, get real FFS . we didn't qualify for a tournament from 74 to 82, we haven't won jack since '66, there are more foreign players here because what we had to start with just ain't good enough. the lads from africa and eastern europe want it more, work harder and have a better attitude, fact.
there technical skills are also uch higher because they train more often abroad and from a young age are repeatedly pushed of the development of their technique. tactically they are more disciplined, they know how to play their position and when asked to compromise to do a specific job they get on with it instead of thinking they know better than the manager andproceed to run around like a headless chicken and leave the lad behind them hideously exposed. discipline is not only about temprement, it is about doing the job you are told to.
at arsenal we take on scores of young english lads, look up the two fa youth cup winning sides of 2001/2002, a lot of those boys are still playing professionally, though not for us. the fact of the matter is some develop better than others, we don't ask to look at their passports, we just keep the best players.
if the FA and england fans want a good england side then they should finish what they started at burton on trent and it will do for us what clarefontaine has done for the french. most french lads play outside of their league, unlike us, the spanish and the italians but it is not to their detrement. the french league is scattered with foreign players, a world cup and european championship win in the last ten years, a constant stream of talent and qualification for every major tournament. go back ten or fifteen years before that and the same was far from true.
many people in this country, from journalist to even most footballers don't actually know what it takes to be a good player, they just get on with it. it's only in later life and with the benefit of experience, you can look at what works and what doesn't. so for every right wing, tub-thumping hack and half-boiled scouse skipper that bleats on about the state of english football and the national team and attempts to blame it on foreign players, think again. perhaps you will see that the problem is more basic, more fundamental and quite easily fixed. it just takes time, a bit of money and effort and for a few old coffin-dodgers to wake up and get in to the 21st centuary.
that's my lunch break wasted, back to the hyperbole............
let me just make this absdolutely crystal: english football and footballers are what they are for a reason. the FA were going to build a centre of excellence at burton on trent i believe but never got it finished. that is the problem. arsenal can take players from europe, africa and south america in to their academy but they can take a boy more than a 90 minute drive, so say southampton, swindon, birmingham, lincoln etc are further than we are allowed to cast our net, complete bollox. as for this bulls hit about foreign players, get real FFS . we didn't qualify for a tournament from 74 to 82, we haven't won jack since '66, there are more foreign players here because what we had to start with just ain't good enough. the lads from africa and eastern europe want it more, work harder and have a better attitude, fact. there technical skills are also uch higher because they train more often abroad and from a young age are repeatedly pushed of the development of their technique. tactically they are more disciplined, they know how to play their position and when asked to compromise to do a specific job they get on with it instead of thinking they know better than the manager andproceed to run around like a headless chicken and leave the lad behind them hideously exposed. discipline is not only about temprement, it is about doing the job you are told to. at arsenal we take on scores of young english lads, look up the two fa youth cup winning sides of 2001/2002, a lot of those boys are still playing professionally, though not for us. the fact of the matter is some develop better than others, we don't ask to look at their passports, we just keep the best players. if the FA and england fans want a good england side then they should finish what they started at burton on trent and it will do for us what clarefontaine has done for the french. most french lads play outside of their league, unlike us, the spanish and the italians but it is not to their detrement. the french league is scattered with foreign players, a world cup and european championship win in the last ten years, a constant stream of talent and qualification for every major tournament. go back ten or fifteen years before that and the same was far from true. many people in this country, from journalist to even most footballers don't actually know what it takes to be a good player, they just get on with it. it's only in later life and with the benefit of experience, you can look at what works and what doesn't. so for every right wing, tub-thumping hack and half-boiled scouse skipper that bleats on about the state of english football and the national team and attempts to blame it on foreign players, think again. perhaps you will see that the problem is more basic, more fundamental and quite easily fixed. it just takes time, a bit of money and effort and for a few old coffin-dodgers to wake up and get in to the 21st centuary. that's my lunch break wasted, back to the hyperbole............

Come on England!, by dotdot on Nov 22, 2007 14:27:55 GMT 1, excuse me - not being English i shouldn't be saying anything here...
if England or any team want to do well they need , they might not want (the FA for eg) -A HARD manager - not some namby pamby shirley wannabe - who cow tows to the FA or for the matter the players most of whom are playing for the nation as a hobby and not as a role model for the youngsters out there whose parents have rushed out and bought the latest tvs to see the ACTION LIVE.
When i say HARD I MEAN a brutal manager take Fergie - he's a monster of a manager - he's played them he drilled them all into the ground and the losers were kicked out - take Becks for eg - he lost it ages ago.
There are other monsters out there capable of GETTING out of the players what it TAKES to make a TEAM - not a shower of shy girlies out for a shopping trip.
Don't get me wrong the terms I used are figures of speech - the likes of which are tame compared to what i shout when I watching my wee team play and wow - they're just as bad - but hey it's only a game - the less money to play for the better the team it seems.
Rupert - nice rant - i see where you're coming from...money won't solve it.... It's a KICK in the HEAD for some of them. Figuratively speaking of course.
..now chill out it's only a game - but shanks was RIGHT ..IT'S LIFE for a LOT OF people...
