Reality check???, by dave313perry on Nov 23, 2007 17:11:57 GMT 1, We are a victim of our own good taste!!!
within this small fraction of the contemporary art market we circle, we have a group of artists who we have followed from the very beginning and in some cases have been the driving force behind their success - Be it Banksy, micallef, Dface, Denning, Eelus, Logan, static, Dolk, Cauty or Beejoir.....the list goes on
What started off as an interesting hobby which coincided with my work has turned into a serious game - with serious decisions and financial risks involved.....why???
For me personally - its time to diversify, big big reality check needed for moi!! I stood in a que stinking of piss for the best part of a day for a print that sold out before i got there, yet i still spent over 2k on second rate lithos of images that i was neither here nor there about when comparing to other works around! everytime i looked at them i got this bitter taste in my mouth and in the end decided to sell them on...naeive to say the least!!!
Anyway to get to my point - these artists we have helped to be successful are now charging over 1k - thats 1k for a limited Edition print!!! how much can you do with 1k!! im glad these artists can demand such prices but they ain't demanding it from me anymore!! Time for me to take a step back and look at the next generation. I'm fed up of prices being pushed up by demand and hype of an artist - long live POW and SOS for god sake!! I feel like I'm punching above my weight trying to buy from the artists i have become attached too - and for that reason - in a dragons den style voice 'I'm out!'
I'm interested to know if anyone else feels the same - this is now a rich mans game - and I'm no rich man! i shall continue to buy what i can afford, just without making nonsensical sacrifices!!!
Peace Dave

Reality check???, by Run Pig Run on Nov 23, 2007 17:25:13 GMT 1, totally agree, I sometimes look at some of my stuff and think i can't believe a few bits of paper are worth thousands of pounds and sometimes feel a bit guilty/sick about owning them.
but the only way i sort it out in my head is that i bought all my prints (except morons) for between £50-£100 and either swaped or sold to buy something else.
if youve got the money fine, spend whatever you want but I get as much enjoyment from my shat-at as i do from my banksy prints.

Banksy's are well out of my league, and D*Face is going the same way very fast But as you say, its just a matter of being realistic and looking around for other artists that we can afford ;D

Reality check???, by saltandiron on Nov 23, 2007 17:28:59 GMT 1, I reached this point after the Faile release earlier this year when I spent £400 odd on a print that I'm still not even sure if I like. Felt I had to do it or I'd be 'missing out'. Then I realised how stupid that was. I suppose it's a pretty cheap lesson to learn in th long run, but still. There are some great artists out there putting stuff out for not a lot of pennies, that's where I look these days (on the whole, still a sucker for Swoon).

Reality check???, by dave313perry on Nov 23, 2007 17:31:10 GMT 1, Still following exactly the same artists... just looking further a field for other artists out of the loop too. and making purchases if i have spare money - prints are a commodity - not a neccessity - i can always go look at some street graff for free!
If i think an artist is overpricing - i aint buying it! otherwise supply will never outstrip demand and prices will keep rising! Theres plenty of good alternative artists out there. And im most definately not getting caught up in buying the 'artist of the moment'
just dont want to become part of this elite collecting of thousands of pounds worth - i cant afford it and dont like the whole ethos of it!

i think so - maybe attempting to break the bigtime - or just trying to cash in? who knows?

With prices at over 1k for some artists, it is now foolhardy of anyone not to consider whether the piece will hold it's price or rise regardless of how much they like the art. I agree with all the well worn buy what you like and can afford arguements but that is a lot easier at £50 to £150 than £750 upwards. The hard part will be in finding genuinely talented artists early enough to but reasonably or those who have been around awhile and whose prices have never really fluctuated.
With prices as they are the only thing you can do is look at the great pieces you got early and remember you were there at the start, I've said this about bands, it's just like seeing bands for a fiver years ago that now would charge £50 and you'd be surrounded by tossers. It's just a wider margin with prints sadly.
It's just a case of looking wider afield. I am currently working with a guy from Liverpool who is really talented and we are considering doing a range of prints - we haven't decided the format yet, screen or alternate and we aim to start reasonably priced and see what happens.
I sympathise but it may get you back to the excited feeling that you obviously felt when you first started collecting - good luck.

Reality check???, by danvnuk on Nov 23, 2007 17:39:31 GMT 1, Most expensive thing Ive ever bought is Coloured Trolleys for £400 odd quid.
Don't think at this stage of the game I'd spend more than that, unless it was something really spectacular.
I've never bought anything on the secondary market - If I can't get it when it's released, I don't bother.

Reality check???, by lastpost on Nov 23, 2007 17:42:38 GMT 1, My major issue is that yes fair enough POW should increase Banksy (maybe even Micallef) prices, but why do all the 'new' artists on POW start off costing maybe £100 upwards? Because they are from the same stable as Banksy? Bit of a POW rant...but take for example Choe. £250ish from outer edge, £300 on POW pre-sale, then whacked up to £350 on day of sale - trouble is, mugs like me will pay it!

I for one am currently undergoing a reality check along with the rest of the market. It's a monster of our own making and it feels a bit like Frankenstein.

Yeah, I think POW are making a mistake to be charging such high prices for the new artists work It just plays into the hands of all the new galleries that are popping up. This time last year this forum would have been 90% talk about POW, but thats more like 30% now

Reality check???, by snakes on Nov 23, 2007 17:49:29 GMT 1, .well at least those dface queeny thingy's seem to have gone to fans as none have popped up on ebay as of yet. At over a grand it is a wee bit steep but it certainly seems to put off the serial flippers especially after their finger burning with the micallef prints.
Maybe there is some logic in pricing some of these prints high (or at their true worth) as it certainly seems to reduce the demand that is created by selling prints such as signed Banksy's for much less that they command on the secondary market which just causes utter chaos!
But then again it's in our British blood, we just cannot resist a good bargain and hate paying over the odds for anything...

Reality check???, by ROLLINS on Nov 23, 2007 18:01:59 GMT 1, Agreed Dave.
I think that I'm lucky to have bought my Banksy, Dface et al when they first started coming out.
I've only ever paid £70 odd for a print and feel robbed to py all these prices in the £100's - I can't afford it either
You have to look at other people just starting to rock it out there.
I just picked up the new Mysterious Al print (It came from zone 5)fo £30 and it's AWESOME - so good in fact I went back and bought another MA print for £50!! (Haters)
I love the stuff I buy. I just bought an OBEY print of his website - $30 - FANTASTIC value!!!
Keep the faith!!!

Reality check???, by Backpack Punk on Nov 23, 2007 18:13:32 GMT 1, One thing I think we tend to forget is that the raise in prices form these artists are largely our fault. Why should Dface charge 500.00 pounds for a print when it sells the same day on ebay for 700+. Before this niche market came about most people bought art for the enjoyment of it, the few who bought pieces as an investment looked long term, not short term, for their gain. That being said, if the market dictates a value of x for a given artists work then why should that artists not charge either x or x+ small premium. I never understood why people say a piece its over priced because they couldn't sell it the same day for a profit. Take the Laz Micallef lithos for example, day they were released they were 1k, today on ebay they are around that on average for all 4 pieces, that goes to show Laz's ability as a business to set his prints at market value, not to high and not to low. Personally I think all 4 look great and over time will appreciate in value, but for now they are sitting at market value and will continue to do so until his next surge in popularity. These artists are not creating art for us to make money on but I think many people look at it that way. Sorry if this didn't come out to coherent I am doing three things at once but I have been meaning to try and make this point for a while.

Thats kind of what im getting at - sick of following the crowd - albeit me making my own decisions, just smoetimes i find myself considering spending hundreds of pounds on something im not sure if i really like.
there is also alot of incomparable prices IMO - you can pay thousands for one artist - and hundreds for another which are equal in terms of availabilty, skill, ability, execution etc etc - its just depends on the 'fad' or 'in thing' on the forum!!! and thats just bollocks!
comes down to the age old buy what you like - and what you can afford to be worth nothing tomorrow
One thing I think we tend to forget is that the raise in prices form these artists are largely our fault.

Reality check???, by RBK on Nov 23, 2007 18:58:03 GMT 1, Good post Dave!
I'm going to use this opportunity to give a little plug - as I touched on this in the FYC Email Newsletter - the subject line was: Let Them Have Their Screen Prints!
Paying 1200 GBP for screen print of a high edition is definitely something I'd personally shy away from unless I loved (and I mean 100% absolutely love the image & artist). You can get the following edtion of 5, original canvas for $2750 from FYC... Kenji Nakayama - ‘Reflection Returnal’
Size: 42" x 32" Price: $2750 + s&h
Please email info@fycgallery.com if you would like to purchase.
