Prices keep falling!, by Francis on Oct 6, 2007 17:09:04 GMT 1, thanks for the neg you should be proud yeah ive heard of them i just don't think they're good enough/influential enough to make it into an art history book. I guess obey could make the cut simply because of his timing but using 5 layers in Illustrator as your artwork ain't gonna cut it
You don't have to like Shepard's Fairey's work, but his influence on US and UK [street] art and culture is immense and undeniable.

Prices keep falling!, by arcam on Oct 6, 2007 17:12:49 GMT 1, i think this relates very well to the current art print market. in the start not many people ever expected banksy prints to be very collectable and valuable and just bought them cos they liked the images. now that they have become very collectable and valuable, everyones trying to get in on the act by buying prints from "the next big thing". therefore my opinion is that banksy prices will be sustained but many others won't. There in lies the the key, just buy what you like.

Supply and Demand ;D
It just comes down to the number of Artists, numbers of new Prints being produced, and the numbers of current and new buyers

Prices keep falling!, by pw on Oct 6, 2007 18:00:01 GMT 1, in the art history books 10 years from now there might be 1 pager on the street art scene 2005-2010. It will be about banksy while micallef might get a mention. Neate possibly. There will probably be a sentence or 2 of its US counterpart so faile/swoon might get a nod. Thats it...
i dont see why micallef would be mentioned along with banksy and neate. he isnt a street artist. hes just one of dozens of talented artists around and i dont really believe that he deserves all of the hype hes been getting. he deserves alot of credit but most of his success of the last year has just been off the back of banksy and laz. just another one of the "next big things" in my opinion.

ha ha, no chance... street art and post graffiti are already well established in academia, Phd after Phd is being written on it. There hasn't been a global movement in art since Pop art. This is MASSIVE. It's a style that's spread from continent to continent. Add that to the already well established outsider/skate art scene from the states.. which incidentally has been going on for a good 10 years before Europe picked up on it and has already comprehensivly influenced and changed contemporary culture as we know it..then you're looking at an already well established and documented movement in art.. there is only this scene and new media art that has pushed any boundaries in the last 20 years, both of them subversive and challenging. It's set to run and run...

I totally agree: he is not next Picasso /no one will ever be/ and there are lots of talented artists out there. However he is the only one from the artists who we talk about here at the moment /Banksy is already/ who has a potential make it world wide and stay there. There is no doubt he has talent. He has a proper artistic background / school, 2nd place BP, he was taught by John Virtue...blah, blah/ He is not a street artist by any means. He is more like street art-fine art cross-over. He has already some successful, world wide, sold-out shows behind him. And his agent is Steve. Put it altogether... Yes, you never know...only time will tell. But don't judge artist by ebay. It means nothing / PW I am not saying you are/ I am talking generally to members here 'cos it seems once the artist is not performing on ebay he is just not good enough.

Nice post. I agree that this scene has now got a place firmly established in art history. Who knows it might even be bigger than pop art but only time will tell. People should just enjoy being part of it rather than trying to predict the future all the time...

It's been well established since Haring and Basquiat, then Barry Mcgee, Kilgallen, and the Beautiful Losers, and now with Banksy and Micallef (I know Micallef doesn't literally paint on the street). What is in question is whether or not the >current< hysteria over street has inflated peoples sense of it's importance as well as the prices of it.
Banksy may have firmly established himself but the hype machine behind him will probably have a shelf life...

I cannot say this enough. Fairey's stenciling is far superior to Banksy's. Period. Make the cut?If anything, Fairey would be the first name mentioned when "street art" finds it's way into art history books, and would probably be the most discussed artist due to the simple fact that he has built an empire out of an art school project. He revolutionized the movement. His work revolutionized the "flipper" market. etc etc etc.

Ok tell you what, lets have banksy Vs Fairey battle of the artists. You show me a pic of one GREAT Fairey street piece and I'll show you one banksy street piece then we'll let the public decide on a vote on which one is the best. I bet you'll never win a vote no matter how many votes we have. Want to try?

no shit banksy's gonna win every time. this board isn't called the Banksy forum for no reason. don't you think this little thing called "bias" is going to play a role?
but i agree, banksy has got balls and creativity that is unparalleled by almost any artist.

Prices keep falling!, by robertlondon on Oct 7, 2007 4:20:55 GMT 1, in the art history books 10 years from now there might be 1 pager on the street art scene 2005-2010. It will be about banksy while micallef might get a mention. Neate possibly. There will probably be a sentence or 2 of its US counterpart so faile/swoon might get a nod. Thats it...
Wow! I've found someone I (broadly) agree with!
On the one page of Street Art it will concentrate on the use of stencils and wheatpaste. The two most defining elements of the movement. There you'll find Banksy, Faile and Swoon... (and maybe Bast).
I also feel a few Brazilian artists will be on the page too. I'd guess Os Gemeos and a few others.
Blek le Rat and that guy who sticks things in Parisian phone boxes are likely to be mentioned as originators. Fairey will be mentioned too as an inspiration for the American artists, though it will just be for his "sticking things up" rather than the art itself. I feel the "won't-go-away" accusations of plagiarism will, to an extent, discredit the actual content of his work in the end.
Neate could be there because of his "put my artwork back on the street" thing but I personally don't feel the content of his work is groundbreaking enough to merit much more. I know many will disagree with this.
Micallef... what can I say? At the rate his hype machine is going... he'll end up on a page with Jack Vettriano.
Have I offended everyone yet? Sorry.

Prices keep falling!, by Dead Elvis on Oct 7, 2007 5:22:01 GMT 1, Well can you at least guide me to fairey's best street piece. Have you got a pic. I really haven't seen much of his. What the best he's done so far in your opinion?
"Best" is subjective. This is the first thing I pulled up from both when I did a search. Both stencil on canvas.
Fairey:
Banksy:
Not trying to turn this into a pissing match as this is a Banksy forum after all...I I just don't understand why Fairey is written off just because he's had an off-year....
