Prices keep falling!, by robertlondon on Oct 7, 2007 5:43:00 GMT 1, You guys are acting like street art was just invented It's about a 20-30 yr old movement now... definitely. hopefully the person writing the one page will have some history lessons first.
The original post concerned "Street Art 2005-2010". It'll be predominately about stencils and wheatpastes. Not about Basquiat/Haring/Lady Pink etc.

Prices keep falling!, by pezlow on Oct 7, 2007 8:33:10 GMT 1, Ok I feel a bit of a rant coming on so here goes.
From time to time people come on this board and treat many of the posters with a lack of respect about their knowledge of art. These people invariably want to tell us some or all of the following:
a) That prices for street art are crazy and way out of kilter with the contemporary art scene. b) That the street art scene started a long time before Banksy. c) That the edition sizes of the prints being released by POW are massive by conventional standards d) That unsigned prints are really just posters e) That a lot of the artists being discussed on here will not have a place in contemporary art history. f) If there is any crash in prices at all the same people then say - See I told you so but no-one listened to me.
The vast majority of people on here know all this already. There are people on here who have forgotten more about contemporary art then I will ever know. Most of us know all about Haring and Basquiat and most of us know that the prints we are buying now, framing and putting on our wall, may not be written about in 2050.
So please before the next "I told you so post" just stick around for a while, contribute to the forum, talk to people and then pretty quickly you will work that there are a lot of knowledgeable people on here who are here because they love this art and like talking about it.

strange choice of dates though.. those are just print collector dates this scene isn't defined by a few people on forums who collect limited edition prints.

Prices keep falling!, by pelle on Oct 7, 2007 9:25:25 GMT 1, Well can you at least guide me to fairey's best street piece. Have you got a pic. I really haven't seen much of his. What the best he's done so far in your opinion? "Best" is subjective. This is the first thing I pulled up from both when I did a search. Both stencil on canvas. Fairey: Banksy: Not trying to turn this into a pissing match as this is a Banksy forum after all...I I just don't understand why Fairey is written off just because he's had an off-year....
I thought we were talking about street art here. These are canvases, commercial goods made to generate a profit.
Oh, and if best is subjective, then what's the point of comparing the two artists in the first place?? You may think that Fairey is better because his work (here) has more layers and texture, I may think that Banksy is better because he can relay a message with very simple means. Right?

Prices keep falling!, by pw on Oct 7, 2007 9:32:57 GMT 1, would you guys give it a rest. we all know banksy is miles better than fairey. but fairey is a major player in the street art scene. and he gets credit from me for sticking to his ethos of supplying affordable art to the masses. even if most of it is crap!

Prices keep falling!, by sham69 on Oct 25, 2007 9:37:13 GMT 1, We're all lemmings. Don't believe the hype. Drop the emotional attachment to the £££'s, kick back, throw the Cocteau Twins on, crack open a bottle of whatever you fancy and soak in the art. NOW
Ask how?, why?, where?, when? Look for the message, the feeling, the context. Think about the subject, the style, the colour, the shape, the form, the light, the dark. Is it narrative, Symbolism, juxtaposition. What?
Find out why was it brought into existence.
How does it make you feel: happy? more intelligent? morose? sympathetic? informed? cool? inspired? Anything?
Ask yourself why YOU bought it in the first place. And if it really was for the £££'s - then what's the point? Sell it. You're f****d

Prices keep falling!, by gozgoz on Oct 25, 2007 10:07:07 GMT 1, Don't know if this helps, but when I was younger I used to collect comic books. When I first started, I only bought what I liked in terms of story line or artists (X-Men, Jim Lee, Frank Miller, etc.) But, then when the comic book market got really popular, artists were trying out gimmicks to differentiate their product. There were 3-d covers, variant covers, and even special "limited edition" versions selling at 3 - 5 times what a normal comic book cost. At the time, I thought they would make for a good investment (I wasn't old enough to trade stocks yet) so I bought all that crap. Some of them appreciated quite a bit in the short term, but I ended up buying hundreds of comics that I normally wouldn't have bought. Now they're collecting dust in a box and I"d be lucky to get list price for them. My point, is that while there are some new people to the collecting scene, we maybe close to a time where artists may try gimmicks to distinguish themselves for the sake of selling art/prints. I think that's when we'll be on the cusp of a real crash. I think what we're seeing now is an adjustment to separate the wheat from the chaff in terms of quality art.
hehe... nice to hear that i wasnt the only eediot who tried to cash in on that! man... it really brings back memories... standing outside comic shops queueuing to get a hold of the death of superman issue... or waiting to get th enext Valiant comics because their prices were skyrocketing... buying every different coloured Image covers... geez...
which is why i guess im skeptical about this whole art hype too... it kinda reminds me of the vinyl craze. I used to buy so much toys. michael lau used to cost so much and used to go for so much. now u can barely find him on ebay, let alone make a profit on it.... those days of vinyl toys seem over and now it seems like street arts the next big thing.

Prices keep falling!, by carlito on Oct 25, 2007 10:21:05 GMT 1, god the cocteau twins are dire...urgggh can I listen to something else please?
maybe some want to intellectualise and on occasion I've been known to..but hell go with your feelings...street art allows anyone whatever they know to have a go / have a smile / wonder / scratch your head - just chill and enjoy.. lets not make it part of the fine art scene with all the baggage and bollox it entails - hell thats part of the reason I blooming like it

Prices keep falling!, by scavos on Oct 25, 2007 16:00:58 GMT 1, I'm a lemming because I am going to give you a +1 sham69. I like your style. Blue Bell Knoll indeed! However, I prefer Joy Division for my contemplation of said existentialist paradigms.
Depends what mood I'm in though as most things in this scene, which I'm still relatively new to, seem to be less about contemplation and more about raw/gut feelings which are often inexplicable no matter how much contemplation is afforded. Art should move people IMO. 'I hate it' 'I like it', 'I love it' 'I've just got to f**king have it'. Sometimes these feelings associated with images are fickle and sometimes not. Love will tear us apartment.
