IP Tracking and Server spamming, by dotdot on Oct 18, 2007 14:04:11 GMT 1, I for one can say this is totally possible.
You have a web page. You have an impression downloaded to a user. (as updated in the log for http). They're using IIS i think.
You scan for thier ip address - log it.
Then later you run a report on who accessed the page. You then filter out the big hitters. Update your config to disallow them from accessing the page. ..review later - notice less traffic to site. Run report - confirm less 'big hitters'. Review after a few weeks and possibly - yes possibly - turn off software.
..Not really surprised people - honestly are we ? We all agree they HAD to do something. This will help make the process fairer. Making those who are lucky - just that.
..

I hear Laz are doing the same sort of thing - if you travel to the gallery and queue in shit conditions you don't get a print.
Oh, they already did that..

IP Tracking and Server spamming, by fasteddie on Oct 18, 2007 14:11:48 GMT 1, I'm on a 100 Mbit line and I get ip numbers within a certain range. I think the range is for the flats in my building. So if I was hammering their site they could ban the ip number range. But if you're on ADSL and connected to a big ISP it would be almost impossible to ban you as you easily could get a new IP from a very big range.
They could also use cookies to track and ban a computer. Not a problem to delete for a user, but a lot of people would'nt know the reason or the solution for the ban.

IP Tracking and Server spamming, by Cocteau 101 on Oct 18, 2007 14:12:13 GMT 1, It possible but requires a degree of configuration and anyway if you unplug your router you'll get a new dynamic ip plus a lot of people will be accessing from a proxy with network address translation.
Also if that is so do we really want to fucking about with POW anymore, it's becoming a nonsense all these bizarre tactics.

IP Tracking and Server spamming, by carlito on Oct 18, 2007 14:12:38 GMT 1, ? how in practice would this work? How would you decide who has has looked too many times prior to a release? If a release comes out, the server goes down and everyone f5's for a couple of hours till it comes back are they all banned?
call me a cynic but this is just a well crafted ruse to make people think twice about how they check....

Or.....as wild alternative to site monitoring software and a way of preventing it, they could just give a date for big releases. A date and the correct time (god help them if they do the release after the clocks go back). I know, I know, a radical idea and perhaps too 20th century. But it may catch on.

IP Tracking and Server spamming, by artcritic on Oct 18, 2007 14:18:04 GMT 1, Sorry been for a cuppa, as for 100Mbps that will only be the internal network speed, gigabit technology is used in many networks nowadays, his external bandwidth will be less. Most new routers/switches are gigabit, it just means using duplex cabling (all the canbles strands in a standard network cable instead of just two pair)

IP Tracking and Server spamming, by speebe on Oct 18, 2007 14:25:11 GMT 1, It seems absurd to block people that just want to invest in something you're selling, and have advertised the sale in such a vague fashion. They can't start blocking people that F5 in desperation because they want one print... and who all know that the site does crash, the only sure fire tactic to obtaining a print is to keep refreshing.
It's ridiculous notion.
Don't bite the hand that feeds you POW.

IP Tracking and Server spamming, by peasant on Oct 18, 2007 14:26:23 GMT 1, so EVERYONE who wants a print is banned from getting one. they're asking us all to pop on the site when we've received the email? hmm.... I'll take my chances with a little bit of refreshing.
Me too...not least because the last two releases were notified by email after they had sold out.
Why don't POW just say when they are going to release a print, then we'll all leave them alone until the time....dead simple...no need for secret squirrel tactics. If they were better organised they wouldn't have these problems.IMO

Exactly!
They give us no idea when a release will happen and THEY ASK US to keep checking the site, their email is useless cos they've sold out by time it arrives.
If they gave an exact time and date for all the releases that month at the beginning of the month (perhaps with pics of the prints and prices) and actually released at those times they'd be no need for all this F5ing and site monitoring etc.
