IP Tracking and Server spamming, by uksnowman on Oct 18, 2007 14:35:20 GMT 1, I have to say you had me going for the first part of your post. Then I read this -
"This also includes people continually refreshing the site using the F5 key!"
This next bit just made me laugh! -
"If you want a chance of being considered for a new print please refrain from constantly refreshing the page or your order WILL be cancelled.”
I know we aren't expected to be a bunch of techies on this forum, but you don't need to be to see the logic behind this is fundamentally flawed.
As someone pointed out, they would have to block IP ranges allocated by ISPs, which instantly reduces their potential customer base. It is quite likely they are installing IP tracking software, but the motives behind it are not to reduce the amount of traffic to their site.
IP tracking (or even just using their server logs) will allow them to get a better picture of how to scale their bandwidth and platforms. If they had any sense, they would use the server logs to check the most common search terms to get their site higher up on the google rankings so they can get even more cash from advertising.
No company with an ounce of IT knowledge would even attempt to bank on reducing traffic to their servers by asking (forcing) groups of customers not to refresh the page. This relies on the fact that POW have reasonable IT knowledge - lol whatever..
This post is either a wind up, or a classic dilbert case of someone with a small amount of knowledge in a very specialised area (either Dora or the OP). i.e. Marketing/sales interpret some technical information and think, I know, we could use this to solve of all our problems.
Just my two penneth..

IP Tracking and Server spamming, by Cocteau 101 on Oct 18, 2007 14:37:27 GMT 1, Fine monitor what you like but are you then gonna identify some t**t from an ebay address who has put a print up for sale 5mins after getting one, hasn't even received it and is trying to make 4k in 5 mins. After the response I got from Laz - it's not our responsibility to control a queue I don't think POW would show this amount of diligence.
It's a fuckin joke!

Exactly! +1 I don't believe POW is going to stop people buying their prints as much as trying to blacklist flippers. Dora always says keep checking the site, that they have no info on the next release, so F5 should not be a problem.

IP Tracking and Server spamming, by Existencil on Oct 18, 2007 14:42:59 GMT 1, How did you manage to get all that info out of Dora? When I spend a load of money on a print & I'm not sure if I got it, she doesn't even respond to me then!
How did you manage to get this glorious reply?
I'm guessing you're probably trying to get people to back off so you have more of a chance when the day comes.
Banning repeat F5ers? What a fucking load of bullshit.

IP Tracking and Server spamming, by melmoth on Oct 18, 2007 14:43:25 GMT 1, I just don't buy this. Given that there is an obvious way around this, namely, the use of proxy servers, why would you tip everybody off like this?

IP Tracking and Server spamming, by tranceport185 on Oct 18, 2007 14:47:49 GMT 1, [quote author=peasant board=general thread=1192711035 Exactly! They give us no idea when a release will happen and THEY ASK US to keep checking the site, their email is useless cos they've sold out by time it arrives. If they gave an exact time and date for all the releases that month at the beginning of the month (perhaps with pics of the prints and prices) and actually released at those times they'd be no need for all this F5ing and site monitoring etc.
Amen CL!

IP Tracking and Server spamming, by absyrd on Oct 18, 2007 14:49:04 GMT 1, Bahahaha. I don't think they realize just HOW many people they are going to have to nail even if they manage to pull it off.
Why in the hell shouldn't I be allowed to hit f5 mindlessly while on business calls? Why can't I go back and forth to the site to f5 while I'm switching up my fantasy football for the week? Garbage.

Yep. She sent me an e-mail saying that she had no idea if my GIWTBB poster had gone out, and that I had no way of tracking it anyway.

IP Tracking and Server spamming, by peasant on Oct 18, 2007 14:52:38 GMT 1, You have been given the info, its up to you what you do with it or whether you believe it? you have been warned!
Dear Artcritic,
If we assume you are indeed a 'deepthroat', then perhaps you could politely traffic some of the more constructive comments from this thread back to POWs secretive nerve centre...all these problems stem from Flippers...but the IP banning system won't distinguish between those of us who collect affordable art for pleasure (and so keep a keen eye on POW), and those hell bent on fast ebay bucks..who will also keep on refreshing the site.
Dates and times for releases please, and print more - devalues the stock...lower value = less flipping....and more of us get a chance to own one.
Yours sincerely,
Peasant
