ART AND DISINFORMATION, by absyrd on Oct 18, 2007 16:01:02 GMT 1, Heavy stuff.
If disinformation is an art form, then Fox News is the Picasso.
I'd like to think it is more of a science where the provider of such disinformation is looking for a particular objective reaction that in some way benefits them in a tangible way. In art, generally the reaction "desired" is more subjective, or based on the individuals perception of it and the reward may be something much more intangible.
Does that make any sense to anyone but me?

ART AND DISINFORMATION, by paulypaul on Oct 18, 2007 16:06:42 GMT 1, It's interesting that we might now debate disinformation (sic) as an art form and this is purely because we have so much information that sorting the wheat from the chaff is difficult. In the early/mid part of the 20thC disinformation was a strategic weapon, not an artform...
Black is white. Is that disinformation? Or gibberish? What artcritic did was disinformation to some and gibberish to others. Some would say Duschamp is gibberish, but he strives to inform, not disinform....

Technically, it made me laugh, so you could call it art. Then again, I also laugh at people getting hit in the groin no matter how many times I see it. Are nut-shots art, bongo?

Surely that's comedy - not art.
Bongo - why should art critics post be considered art? all he did was lie for some percieved gain on his part. It's not particularly clever or original so why should we even begin to consider it as art?

Well, it is if you want. Art is in the eye of the beholder. If you want to consider it an art event - go ahead. Didn't Mapplethorpe stick a bolt in his arse or some such thing? Why is that any less of an art event than Dirt Sanchez stapling their balls to a table (much funnier!). Well, it's no less an art event if that is how you want to interpret it....

ART AND DISINFORMATION, by numusic on Oct 18, 2007 16:32:35 GMT 1,
I actually think that's completely wrong.. it's an interpretation and misreading of post modernism from the perspective of a modernist painter who was probably schooled in the late 70's by tutors schooled on modernism. The post modern sensibilities of cut n paste, sampling, concepts, diversity and all that goes with it simply allows for EVERYTHING, including modernism and dennings concept of Neo Modernism. It isn't dogmatic like conceptual art which is in effect the ultimate modernisty expression. I think what we're seeing now is in part down to the likes of Hirst, Emin and the YBA's.. concept art without the intellectualisation of the work by the artist. It's been taken a stage further is all.. Now news, media and celebrity politics are obviously corporate entities obsessed with spin, society needs to find alternative and more trusting ways of getting information, a very plain speaking voice is required and I think this new art does that very well, and in a way that we, the masses, can understand. It's often dark, funny, takes the piss , is topical and deals with very human issues. Something conceptual art and Modernisms couldn't do.. hence Urban Art maybe..
or something like that....

I find that quite poetic, actually, and quite a good underlying reason for the surge of interest in urban art other than "these skateboarder kids are now working at fortune 500 companies".

ART AND DISINFORMATION, by mike hunt on Oct 18, 2007 16:58:56 GMT 1, I think comedy can be art (and art can be cheap comedy). English comedy can sometimes be cutting edge and push boundaries (league of gentlemen - remember the impact?).
The question (in my opinion) isn't whether its art, but whether its good art. Signing a cheque means expressing yourself (in a small way) through your signature. At the opposite end of the scale, artists need to make money, so there will probably be some compromise. The question is, how much compromise and is it successful? In the case of artcritics post, me thinks no.
