Whats gonna happen in 2007?, by saltandiron on Jan 26, 2007 15:57:28 GMT 1, If Banksy does a big (and very good) UK show I think he'll cement himself as a long term player. At the moment I think that if fashion changed he could fall almost as quickly as he rose and they'd be a few people left on this forum reminiscing about the good old days when we could have sold our collections and bought the crown jewels.
Faile will pick up and become a bit more popular on Ebay as people realise how absolutley amazing their stuff is.
A couple of people who are considered quite good at the moment will become a lot less popular, not sure who but I think that there will be a 'second wave' of artists who will be popular this year and there's not enough space to go round so some people will have to lose out.
Prices as a whole will level out as I think there is a ceiling that's going to be reached. We'll see the banksy prints top out at about 9-10k for one of the rare ones.
And the only thing I can be sure of is that on 31st December 2007 I'll look back over this post and think 'well, you were a bit wrong with those predictions weren't you?!'

Whats gonna happen in 2007?, by corblimeylimey on Jan 26, 2007 16:02:17 GMT 1, Yeah, I think POW will be able to handle it, they've had a month to get things ship shaped and hopefully sort their computer out too.
It's not just the three you mentioned though, titifreak could be big also I reckon.

Whats gonna happen in 2007?, by Daniel Silk on Jan 26, 2007 16:08:26 GMT 1, Yeah, Faile does some top quality stuff and I really think they deserve to become much more well known than they are now ;D Every single piece they do is a masterpiece I should think they really enjoy what they do, and it shows in the work ;D
I feel that D*Face, Dolk & Eelus, have been kept second fiddle to Banksy by POW over the last year so I hope that they can really push forward in 2007 ;D I think POW will need to expand on the printing side to keep up with the demand, or they risk some of the artists moving away to other printers

I wonder if POW are just getting to the point were they have too many artists on the go at once?

Whats gonna happen in 2007?, by saltandiron on Jan 26, 2007 16:13:16 GMT 1, To be honest I just dont get D*Face, Dolk & Eelus, (except for HATE) but I appreciate what you're saying, and from the passion that people on here have for them then I agree that they could get very big next year.
I think Logan Hicks could get very big next year- but then thats just cos I think he's very good and want to buy one of his pieces.
We could see an alternative stable being set up as competition to POW - at the moment there isn't really anyone who does a similar sort of thing (eyestorm seem a bit more upmarket) so its possible someone could jump into the gap. A good bit of rivalvry could be good for all of us!

Whats gonna happen in 2007?, by mido on Jan 26, 2007 16:37:54 GMT 1, faile are great, but appeal to a limited audience only. They are art really, but do a lot of it on the street as well.... Will never have the exposure of banksy because they aren't 'message' based.
I feel that D, eelus and dolk simply aren't good enough to ever be used in the same breath as banksy. with publicity, work, and a good label that people buy from (POW is a well respected 'label', just like Creation were, or Motown) you can bump up an artist, sell out small editions etc, but unless they have a USP, they'll never be massive. banksy has several USP's (if that isn't a contradiction in terms!). those 3 have none.

Whats gonna happen in 2007?, by mido on Jan 26, 2007 16:39:51 GMT 1, what is happening though is that there are loads of small 'labels' around (just like the record industy - you get one big label, and losts of little ones) and loads of artists are releasing stuff for their first time ever. that makes the market bigger and bigger....

Whats gonna happen in 2007?, by manchestermike on Jan 26, 2007 16:46:22 GMT 1, Totally agree with Martin, I do think alot of pretty good artists but who is good enough to rise up to Banksy's level?
Personally I think Faile and Insect (off the back of the Dead Rebels series - a totally brilliant and fantastically well executed idea). Invader could also be one to watch (main problem is the translation of his work to 2D)

I love Insects work, but I wonder if they are not that interested in becoming "Artists" Going by the insect.co.uk website it seems like they are busy doing design work, and maybe the art side of things is just for fun? ;D I'm probably wrong but thats how I see it

Whats gonna happen in 2007?, by corblimeylimey on Jan 26, 2007 17:10:35 GMT 1, I agree with you Martin, I think a lot of print producers and artists other than the POW stable will be taking some of the action, and not a bad thing either IMO. Although I do think a hell of a lot of Banksy, I'm just as happy with my Che from Dolk and at £50 makes even paying £200 - £300 for a Banksy seem very expensive (even if it's worth double that straight away). I'm looking forward to what Dolk will be coming up with this year also I'm keeping an eye on a number of small producer sites for work I like which costs £75 or less.

Whats gonna happen in 2007?, by foundation on Jan 26, 2007 17:12:17 GMT 1, I think they have all been plodding on for a while now, the banksy phenomena has drawn alot of excellent artists to our attention, some of whom we would never have seen with out the guidance of others on these forums. D especially is due some decent exposure, insect have always been a love em or hate em thing until the ( out of character / stlye / form) the released the dead rock stars, it'll be a tough one to follow up. Cant see alot more going to happen for faile, another love em or hate em group, for me its all a bit samey.

Very true indeed! Right now feels like a very exciting time in the contemporary art world. I certainly can't remember when art was such a hot topic and quite so assessable... and this new assessability will no doubt, open the door for some great new artists!

I think Micallef is a whole different thing I see - Micallef and Harrington as "Artists" Insect, Cauty, Hewlett, Faile & Burgerman as "Designers" D*Face, Dolk, Eelus, Nick Walker & Banksy as "Street/Graffiti Artists"
Something like that anyway

Whats gonna happen in 2007?, by RBK on Jan 26, 2007 19:20:36 GMT 1, My 2007 Predictions:
- POW will have a strong year - I think Titifreak shows the most promise. Look forward to seeing more Dolk. Will be interesting to see where Eelus goes after he retires the Star Wars theme (which I think he should after Whatulookin-at). - Logan Hicks will get top gallery exposure in the US & UK. - SouledOutStudios will sell most of their prints out a la POW quickness - Micallef will have a successful LA show and get praise from US critics. Some hardcore forum members will fly to the show out of fear they will miss getting a screen print. - Santa's Ghetto will take exposure/branding/stunts to the next level and be held in NYC. - Hopefully, Ben Turnbull will be picked up by a US gallery - We will waste countless hours contributing to this glorious forum

Whats gonna happen in 2007?, by tomhills on Jan 26, 2007 19:42:47 GMT 1, i fear that it could all become a bit staid. i agree with almost every comment on this page (unusual for me), though i do wonder if we're now getting into a formulaic process whereby on a routine basis a routine group of artists release some routinely average work. anything artistic that is created to sustain a process, is already watered down in my opinion. my bold prediction for this year, and next, is that after the POW run of la prints sell out that'll be the last we see of mr banks for some time. POW are now a corporate machine who will, like a record label, release a series of work by an artist in a short period and then the next artist will come in and do the same. this goes on and on until it's time for you to release again. your label gives you a deadline to work to then releases your work to the public. this inevitably leads to stifled creativity. banksy will go and take a step back, watch what he started become a victim of it's own success and if and when he thinks the time is right he'll come back bit in a totally different way. he's always gone against the grain and now is the time for him to mix it up again. fresh as ever in 2009? think about it peace.

Whats gonna happen in 2007?, by Ågent ßacardi on Jan 26, 2007 21:54:35 GMT 1, I'm in agreement with almost everything here... except that I think Dolk will be a dark horse that nobody would have seen coming. Of course, that could be because I'm biased (yes, I worship Dolk), but perhaps he currently appears to be on the down-low just because he hasn't been quite active. He hasn't released any new prints for quite a while, and there was only 1 canvas for sale at Santa's Ghetto (and zero new prints). No new stuff = No new hype = Fall off the radar.
But he's definitely getting into gear with some pretty damn exciting stuff lined up for 2007, so we shall see.

Ya spot on Mr Bacardi ;D I think our Dolk hits the same sort of spot as Banksy, and with the Banksy prices going crazy Dolk will fit straight in the gap ;D
