Lithograph or print, by arttart on Sept 18, 2007 11:17:14 GMT 1, please can someone help me out ... my scatty friend has moved abroad and left me lots of prints and lithographs of artists like banksy, who i've heard of, but also some unknown ones such as hockney and micallef (?), and i'm clueless to the difference of the lithographs and prints and the value ... i've just looked into it a bit this morning and it seems some may be worth a couple of hundred pounds...whats the difference please someone, help me out

Lithograph or print, by dumpsuk on Sept 18, 2007 13:25:06 GMT 1, Hmm interesting, why has everyone turned into a complete cynical t**t on this forum? Arttart is genuinely asking for help and advice. When I first stumbled on this board I found 60 or so prints in my plan chest that i bought/swapped 5-6years ago. I had no idea what they were worth. I knew the banksy prints might be worth something, but had no idea how much. And when I posted that I also had an orignal Adam Neate piece painted on wood (how the f*ck was I supposed to know who that little upside down charity symbol signature belonged to) I was met with sarcasm and neg'd for it. So give the girl a break.. she may be genuine. Arttart post some photos and the more 'helpful' members will be glad to help you out.

Lithograph or print, by corblimeylimey on Sept 18, 2007 13:38:07 GMT 1, can someone tell me the difference between a signed and numbred lithograph and a signed print?
A lithograph will usually be made of small dots which will be visable under a magnifing glass, screenprints will usually be made of solid colours which will be applied much thicker, in some cases screenprints will be made of dots but they'll be much larger than Litho dots.
Either way they're both prints.

no idea what anyone would have to gain from it, but if as this particular person says the had spent some time looking into it, dont you think they would have noticed micallefs name mentioned on the title of every other thread?

Lithograph or print, by sham69 on Sept 18, 2007 13:53:02 GMT 1, I'd love to help you out. Nothing would be too much trouble. Fire off another post describing the pictures and I'll help as as much as I can. I'll probably even take a couple off your hands so you can get out for a posh meal and a beer too. You can even take your scatty mate for a jar with the proceeds.
Oh, and it's numbered. Not numbred.

Lithograph or print, by pezlow on Sept 18, 2007 15:33:02 GMT 1, My advice arttart would be to tell us what you have and wait and see what is identified. And don't whatever you do sell anything yet until you know what you have. I'm sure you have had lots of pm's from sharks offering to buy things off you already. Ignore them - they are only trying to capitalise on your lack of knowledge.
There are lots of friendly people on this forum who will be able to help you out once you give us a better idea of what you have.

Lithograph or print, by Pattycakes on Sept 18, 2007 16:27:49 GMT 1, Hi Corblimey sorry but you're wrong. A lithograph isn't made up of tiny dots, that would be a photographic reproduction. A lithograph is either printed from a slab of stone or from a zinc plate, the artist draws on this (it can also be transferred from a sheet of paper) with a wax crayon, through various chemical processes the wax sinks into the stone and this is then inked and the image printed to paper, the only time it would be made of dots is if the initial transfer was a photographic image - and then it would be effectively a photographic reproduction. Lithography is one of the most labour intensive and skilled print techniques, the Japan images by Micallef from Eyestom were lithographs, Dirty Deluxe and 21st Century are Giclee (photographic reproductions) the difference in quality is massive!
Interestingly a silkscreen is made of dots. The screen is a mesh and ink is forced through it with a squeegee, of course the mesh is so fine and the ink so thick that the dots disapear once the transfer has been made to the paper.
Gicleee are generally photographic images that are printed with an industrial ink jet printer onto paper, in terms of printmaking skill they are the least interesting and most reproductive of all techniques as they require virtually no input from the artist, other than the originally conceived work which is photographed, put into a computer and then printed - though of course it might be manipulated on screen.
Etchings are in my opinion the greatest test of an artist's ability, I'd love to see Banksy get to grips with aquatint and etching - I think it could be very interesting!
the printguru has spoken Here endeth the lesson.

Lithograph or print, by sham69 on Sept 18, 2007 16:51:58 GMT 1, No way Jose. I'd be forgetting stone slabs and etchings on zinc, that might have been done in the 1700's. I'd be fairly confident that full colour lithos are exactly what it says on the tin. Colour prints run from a bog standard 4-colour offset litho press, after being pre-screened at something like a 200-300 line screen.
I might be wrong. But it really isn't a dark art. These days the prints are more likely to be scanned from a neg and output to a polymer plate.
As I'm not a fine art publisher I'm prepared to be wrong, so it would be interesting to see if anyone has an inside knowledge. If anyone knows CBL should, he does this stuff for a living.

You know what you're talking about too, you're in the business aren't you.
Read the info at www.thecurwenstudio.co.uk/
"Processes - We offer all methods of lithographic printmaking to suit each artists preference: original stone, zinc/aluminium grained plates, or aluminium photo plate. Each can be used on their own or in combination with other methods. Whichever method is chosen our desire to produce quality work is paramount."
