Where would you put your money?, by patrese on Sept 11, 2007 17:56:29 GMT 1, If you had up to £20k to spend on an original(s) what would you buy? Are there any artists you would call 'must buy' right now? what are the general opinions for art in this £ bracket?
thanks for your views!

There are a few really cool artists at the moment you should check them out: Cisco, Oracle, Global Crossing is also a solid investment.

I ask because I am relatively new to contemporary scene - i have built a collection of modern british and have just started on the contemporary scene. For example I like Gerald Laing & andrew Mcattee

Where would you put your money?, by Daniel Silk on Sept 11, 2007 18:40:49 GMT 1, 20K to spend ;D
I think it would be best to split it up something like this -
10K on Originals priced between 1K-4k each 10K on Signed Limited Edition prints priced between £50-£500 each
Only buy what you really like, and from a good spread of Artists

But seriously, only buy stuff if you want to look at it every day.

Well I would say Adam Neate but I don't think you'd get one for £20k
Hmmmm
I'd go for:
Matt Small Original c.£3500 Conor Harrington Original c.£7000 Adam Neate Red and White Portrait prints c.£10000
But if you didn't want the prints scrap them and go for:
Chloe Early Original c.£1500 (a very nice one is still at Stolen Space at this price & I'm very tempted, but will have to resist) D*Face Original c.£3500 EINE Original c.£1500 Guy Denning Original c.£1000
Stick the last £2k in a Betfair account and try and make the money back
And save the rest for a bit wetter day (or go for a Jeff Soto

Good call. Some nice Phil Frost originals on arkitip website at the mo. The print on there is, IMHO, an absolute bargain. $375 for a Frost! Great image too.

Where would you put your money?, by patrese on Sept 12, 2007 12:00:32 GMT 1, To sham69 i do work in that industry although anything i buy is for me personally, i certainly don't run a fund that invests in art! Am just interested in what members would go for really (i'm buying obviously). Eg i would never have heard of Jose parla had i not posted this topic. I am very open minded. Adam neate looks fantastic too but an original if i am not mistaken will be £50k+..?

Where would you put your money?, by sham69 on Sept 12, 2007 12:30:24 GMT 1, That's fair enough. My advice is the same as everyone else, only buy what you like and get the best piece you can afford at the time.
If you're in the financial services you'll know better than anyone to that spreading your risk can also give you the best chance of making any rewards. But remember this is art. The appreciation comes in living with it on a day to day basis and if it appreciates monetarily it's a bonus. It's so much nicer than gazing at a share certificate.
If I was throwing my hat in the ring it would be the stuff coming out of the states Faile/Bast/Parla/Swoon. Interesting that you mentioned originals in your post and not prints though.
Remember, if you can see a bandwagon it generally means it's already left.
