Food, by frank11 on May 22, 2007 13:51:54 GMT 1, Danvuk....Have to agree about the Chop House, do not think i have ever had a bad meal there great food, and good prices especially when you compare to a couple of the places in Leigh i will never forget the chap at the Estuary trying to charge £25 for a cooked breakfast?!?!? Have you tried Stefans in westcliff just of the London Rd near St Bernards really stunning food and lovely relaxed atmosphere, highly recomend. Also while on the subject of Southend have you seen the Banksy stencils (obviously fake!) appearing around Hadleigh lately seen a few placard rats and a gangsta rat, did make me smile! Obviously we are not alone

Frank, Agreed - the Estuary really tries it on with the prices.
Stefans - no - havent tried that....I'll check it out
I'm quite partial to Urmas in Leigh - kind of like Pizza Express but privately owned - its incredibly cheap. (BlackCat Bar next door down the alleyway is also pretty cool if you get the chance to pop in, its not advertised and has these kind of Fight Club rules - The First rule of BlackCat is you dont talk about BlackCat....doh!)
The Grove in Leigh and The Boatyard (pushing it a bit) are nice, as is the The GlassHouse in Southend. No doubt you've been to all of these.
Hadleigh - no - havent seen em, I generally just drive through Hadleigh on the way to other places - I'll pay more attention next time.

Food, by corblimeylimey on May 22, 2007 14:54:56 GMT 1, Excellent Fat Duck report abdoujaparov, thanks.
For the veggies amongst us I'd recommend the Terre A Terre in Brighton some of the most inventive food I've eaten. www.terreaterre.co.uk
More local to me is the Michael Caines restaurant at The Royal Clarence hotel in Exeter but there's also one in Bristol in the Royal Marriott hotel, I've eaten in both and highly recommend them. www.michaelcaines.com/ Also in Glasgow Canterbury Manchester Chester too apparently.
The restaurant/hotel he actually cooks in is near Chagford on Dartmoor, Gidleigh Park, I've visited the place but couldn't afford to eat there as it would involve drinking and so I'd need to add a room for the night too, as it's in the middle of nowhere. One day.... www.gidleigh.com/
As for Indian, the best place I've eaten in is the Rajpoot in Bath but that was nearly 20 years ago when I lived there. It's still there but I don't know how good it is these days, although acording to their website "indian restaurant of the year" www.rajpoot.com/

Food, by corblimeylimey on May 22, 2007 15:06:56 GMT 1, As for unusual food the strangest for me is frogs legs (yeah I know, not that strange) but I had them very fresh as the guy in the villa next door to a place I stayed in in France cought his own, he demonstrated how he prepared them.
He put his hand into the basket that cought them (kind of like a lobster pot) and pulled one of the many out, grabing it by the legs he knocked it's head on the wall and slit it open at the top of the legs then saying (in French of course) "off with the trousers!" pulled the skin off the legs, snapped them off and throw the rest away.
His wife cooked them up in some garlic and herb butter within the hour, I must say one of the best things I've eaten, and although I'm now a vegatarian I may be tempted by fresh frogs legs again one day.

For CBL and other West Country Veggies, you might be interested in Cafe Maitreya. I've still not been there but supposed to be excellent. Easton, Bristol. The UK's Top Vegetarian Restaurant - The Observer Food Magazine Awards 2007 / The Vegetarian Society Awards 2004 and 2005
Not sure about the website colours though ;D www.cafemaitreya.co.uk/

I had an interesting star studded experience in Aldo Zillis Covent Garden restuarant.
Was going to the Theatre with my GF and had a pre-theatre meal in there.
So eating away and looking around as you do and notice a familiar face.....It's Chris Evans and his then wife Billy Piper (and a handfull of her mates who looked about 16)
My GF, an avid reader of trashy celeb mags is fascinated - craning her neck and trying to listen in, without appearing too obvious....a feat women excel at I might add.
Anyway - Aldo Zilli comes out and is chatting to them....its getting more interesting by the second....my Girlfriend is now boss eyed and is putting food into her ear by mistake.
At this moment, something happens that erases Chris Evans, Billy and Aldo Zilli from our minds.
The guy sitting behind my GF turns to his friend to chat, and I catch a look....its Jude Law.
"You'll never guess who's sitting directly behind you?" I say.... My GF is now like a dog with two d**ks for the remainder of the meal.
Great Fun. ;D

I've also had crickets, snake, piranha & guinea pig. And no doubt some other oddities as well, but I can't quite remember off the top of my head!
Various bugs and small animals whilst in central america, but still think the drunken kebab would contain the scariest ingrediants.

Ive decided to take this thread in a new direction - and post a pic of something I've actually made recently.
It's a Tarte Tatin. It's delicious. I made it, with my own fair hands.
When people eat it, I insist they listen to an iPod recording containing 'The sound of the Tarte Tatin' Its a recording of an apple growing, punctuated with my screams as I burn myself with hot caramel.
If they complain, I kick em down the stairs and out into the street, banished from ever sampling my luscious Tarte Tatin's again.

Food, by wezzley on May 22, 2007 22:34:49 GMT 1, Yeah Hakasan is good if a bit pricy, down a dodgy pis stained alley off totenham ct road, just a doorway, but then u head down dark stone stairs into a multimillion £ futuristic opium den, if u like it there try Yauacha in soho, same kind of thing, but for dimsum....yum, same team behind it I think.

Food, by megaelch on May 22, 2007 22:46:40 GMT 1, Might it be there is a connection between the love for food and the love for art .. many of you seem to enjoy good cooking , as well as i do .. just back from a short trip to the venice / friaul area in italy and the fridge is full of san daniele ham, "speck " and all kinds of salamis .. not talking about the 35 bottles of wine . Nice to meet you all here on board :-) Come and see me in munich .. Oktoberfest is just round the corner !! ;D ;D ;D Stephan

Food, by dmandpenfold on May 23, 2007 0:16:33 GMT 1, Do people still eat tappioka (sp?) ... I have only seen it served out of a massive couldron with a wooden spoon whilst the dinner lady growls at me! Man, I don't miss my school days
oooh i remember that, but i was one of the kids who actually liked tappioca (even the school lumpy version), semolina was a favourite too.
For the veggie fans amongst you i found a place in Hanoi called Com Chay Nang Tam, address is 79A Tran Hung Dao. This place was recommended by a friend in Australia when i was due to visit Hanoi for work, all i had to go on was a description of a bhuddist vegetarian restaurant down a dodgy side alley and around a corner, believe it or not i found the right place, the food was fantastic and very good value, great for anyone who is thinking of backpacking through the area.
recommended if ever you are there
