Yeah i appreciate banksy's work alot...But the problem is, im an "old" banksy fan not a "new" one thats just got into him ever since he's been famous (not saying that your one of those people). Anyway when i first got into his work he was pretty much unheard of but now its hard to find someone that hasnt heard of him?? Yeah this is a good thing because it means alot of peoples minds are being opened up to this shithole of a world, however selling prints at ยฃ600 is a bit of a joke youve got to admit??

You always get people like this, its like when a band gets successful and starts being played on Radio 1 and all that you get people saying their selling out by playing bigger venues and things like that. its pathetic what are artists meant to do sit on their ass all day and say 'ah i have all these people wanting to buy my stuff but I'm not going to sell it because someone may say I'm selling out.'

if he didnt give a f*ck then surely all his work would be gallery only and would cost ยฃ1000+, with the demand for his canvas's going through the roof then why would he even bother with prints?!?!?
think if you've got such a disliking for the guy why would you bother posting on his fan forums or god forbid actually buy his work.

It's the market value, supply and demand, what people are actually prepared to pay.

I'm not trying to be cool, and it might not be fair that his prints are going out of our price range but what can you do about it? What do you expect Banksy to do about it? They're being as fair as they can by selling direct to fans for below market value.

so are you saying that you'd prefer his work to stay on the street and not the gallery's?
personally i think he could stick to canvas and very limited signed prints and sell at LAZ only and still make the millions he's making now....im just glad as a fan i can still afford to buy a print for ยฃ200/300 which is way below market price (ebay) put it on my wall and smile at it every day.
the price his prints are selling for is madness but there are only worth what people are willing to pay for them....

There isnt much you can do about it but have a good old debate on a banksy fan forum. I just feel the market value wouldnt be soooo high if the original price wasnt as high as it is...

I remember seeing unsigned girl with balloon prints on ebay for about ยฃ300 just last year..And i thought that was expensive!! Having had a quick look on ebay today theres one on there now with 24 bids and 5 hours for ยฃ1255 and a buy it now price of ยฃ3750!! Also there's a signed grannies print on there with 17 bids and 6 days left at ยฃ1320?? If the original price of the grannies wasnt ยฃ500..I personally dont think the market value would already be that high.

Banksy is a sellout..., by mwjm0 on Nov 20, 2006 15:56:48 GMT 1, if banksy really didn't give a s**t about the artworld and 'fame' he would have his prints as open editions, he wouldn't inform news channels about where he is 'getting up' (palestine), and wouldn't pull lame stunts like the paris hilton cd (making a point about the superficiality etc of fame and then selling your original pieces to brangelina was a bit rich for me). the whole excitement for me about banksy was finding street pieces around london when my friends were with me and they knew nothing about him, not in seeing how much my prints could make on ebay. the appeal of banksy for me was that he was firstly fun and secondly mildly subversive. when an 'underground' artist goes mainstream he/she is dead (to me anyway). it will be interesting to see what happens over the next couple of years.

I cant understand it... posted whilst listening to Arctic Monkeys on the radio , how very appropriate.

Banksy is a sellout..., by mwjm0 on Nov 20, 2006 16:16:35 GMT 1, if banksy started out as a fine artist showing in galleries and he got to where he is now fine. but he was / is part of in my eyes an underground movement which if exposed and accepted by a mainstream audience loses its power and effect. see back in the 80s when futura etc starting showing in galleries after years of putting the work in. they were dropped after about a year and only resurfaced years later (after working normal jobs) when street culture became what it is. i have 1 signed soup can colourway purchased from POW that i would never get rid of. i've never bought a print on ebay (and couldn't at the current prices). I love the old banksy not what he is now.

Banksy is a sellout..., by corblimeylimey on Nov 20, 2006 16:38:30 GMT 1, I think a signed Grannies would be selling for the price they do now (eg a little less than some slightly older signed) whether they were sold originally for ยฃ200 or ยฃ600. Obviously it would have made a difference if the original price was ยฃ1800.
I'm not sure what you're trying to say, is it he's a sell out cos his prices have gone up, and/or he's now well known and the more people that see his work the more popular he is? do you think he should call it a day now as banksy and maybe carry on under a new name?
