I'm not such a fan of JR, but the others are all outstanding. The finished wall should be an amazing !

I think Blu's Italian?
I'd have like to see a British artist involved as well, but frankly I don't think there are many good enough.
Banksy, Eine, Neate, Sweet Toof & Cyclops are the only ones i'd let loose on it.....

Tate Modern ๐ฌ๐ง London, by spirit on Apr 2, 2008 23:09:58 GMT 1, Well they only need one british one and they have a few to pick from there. I wonder if scale is the issue - all the artists they have picked seem to work on a REALLY BIG SCALE - not sure if any of the British artists really do that. Ready to be proved wrong about that of course...

(I know he's not doing it and all. Just wondering.)

I have never seen a REALLY BIG SCALE Faile. So there goes that theory. I guess it's just the artists that tie in with the book for sale in the foyer. Can't be any other reason. Just remembered the boxers on the wall but anything else? And JR? Big photos!

Tate Modern ๐ฌ๐ง London, by Jef Aerosol on Apr 2, 2008 23:45:25 GMT 1, one question : do you think huge stuff like that is still street art in the way we generally use the term ? I'd rather call them "murals"... I don't know, it seems like something totally different to me. I like that, but it's "something else"

The Wieden & Kennedy mural in Amsterdam is a REALLY BIG SCALE Faile
If I'm not mistaken, so was their NYC show: a large scale work split up across a series of large canvases.
EDIT: I read a quote from the curator saying he didn't chose the usual UK suspects as he wanted to show the breadth of street art that exists worldwide.
I like Os Gemeos and Nunca A LOT. Best street artists out there IMO.

Personally think murals Jef, but also recognise it as street to some extent ('big street' that is!).

Tate Modern ๐ฌ๐ง London, by dynamixx on Apr 3, 2008 4:58:01 GMT 1, Isn't this just street art sanitised by a government subsidised institution? Doesn't having the approval of the Tate just numb the rawness of why street art exists in the first place?
No wonder no UK artists artists were involved. It would only instantly detract from any credibility they might have otherwise have had (apart from the 'credibility' of auction prices and mainstream back-slapping).
I'm not saying Faile, Blu etc aren't awesome at what they do, but this definately marks a crossroads in the street art movement, from being anti-establishment and daring, to being welcomed into the comfy, IKEA furnished inner sanctum of the art world.
On a positive note, at least it's outside, so it can't be as cringeworthingly bad as Andipa's efforts.

Tate Modern ๐ฌ๐ง London, by Studiocromie on Apr 3, 2008 7:52:29 GMT 1, dinamixx i understand what you 're saying
but i'd like to invite you to think aboout another term. that is "public art" this is what blu, for example has always been doing. imo.
if someone in my town call him and ask him to do a piece in the street, there are good chances that he'll come and do it happily. he has always done it. and that's what i call public art.
this guy offers his art for free around in the world. and it's just a great thing
morover, he can also be seen as a street artist, anti everything. he has always painted the street illegally and he has always been happy to do it. but then again, that's still public art, not legal, but still public.
if i was a street artist these days, i'd feel much better to be called a public artist then a street. it's a way to give your art to everyone, no matter if it's the smallest town in south italy or the tate galley in london.
by the way, this summer there will be a couple of great big events i'm going to announce soon that will feature the art of both jr, blu, and many many others street and public artists
